This volume is the sixty fifth issue of the Mediterranean Action Plan Technical Reports Series. This series contains selected reports resulting from the various activities performed within the framework of the components of the Mediterranean Action Plan: Pollution Monitoring and Research Programme (MED POL), Blue Plan (BP), Priority Actions Programme (PAP), Specially Protected Areas (SPA) and Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC). Ce volume constitue le soixante cinquième numéro de la série des rapports techniques du Plan d'action pour la Méditerranée. Cette série comprend certains rapports élaborés au cours des diverses activités menées dans le cadre des composantes du Plan d'action pour la Méditerranée: Programme de surveillance continue et de recherche en matière de pollution (MED POL), Plan Bleu (PB), Programme d'actions prioritaires (PAP), Aires spécialement protégées (ASP) et Centre régional méditerranéen pour l'intervention d'urgence contre la pollution marine accidentelle (REMPEC). INTRODUCTION The third edition of the Directory of Mediterranean Marine Environmental Centres prepared by UNEP/FAO in 1985 proved to be, as had the earlier editions of 1976 and 1977, a useful source of reference and a successful tool for continued regional co-operation. In view of this, the UNEP/Co- ordinating Unit for the Mediterranean Action Plan (MEDU), with the support of the Oceans and Coastal Areas Programme (OCA/PAC) of UNEP, has prepared a new, updated edition of this Directory. The new Directory contains up-to-date information on one hundred and forty two governmental, international, UN, private and other institutions, including their scientists and administrators, engaged in the research, monitoring, education, training and management of the Mediterranean marine environment. The listings and information collected went into compiling the MARIN and MARPER computerized databases, managed and maintained at MEDU in Athens, which will continue to be updated as new information is contributed. All marine environmental centres included in previous editions of the Directory, as well as others listed in the UNEP/Regional Seas Directory of Marine Scientists and Marine Environmental Centres in the Arab States, the UNEP/Regional Seas Directory of Organizations Co-operating with or Contributing to Action Plans and Global Activities of the UNEP Oceans Programme, the Fondation René Seydoux "Répertoire Méditerranéen", 1991, and those on the MEDU mailing list, were contacted. Questionnaires in English and French, along with comprehensive guidelines, were distributed, and those institutions which completed the questionnaire were invited to comment and verify the information prior to printing. In this Directory, institutions are listed in alphabetical order within country. The name of the institution is cited in English and its original language or the transliterated form of that language, wherever provided. Francophone institutions appear in French. An index of professional/scientific staff citing the last name, first name and speciality, arranged alphabetically within country, follows the main body of information. Only institutions whose activities and specialities directly relate to the marine environment have been included. Every effort was made to prepare a complete, accurate and useful source of reference on Mediterranean marine environmental institutions, their objective, specialities, activities, programmes, equipment and staff. C'est pourquoi, l'Unité de coordination du Plan d'action pour la Méditerranée, avec l'aide du Programme pour les océans et les zones côtières du PNUE, a préparé une nouvelle édition à jour de ce Répertoire. Le nouveau Répertoire contient des informations actualisées sur cent quarante deux organisations gouvernementales et internationales, les organisations des Nations Unies, les institutions privées et autres - y compris le personnel scientifique et administratif - qui s'occupent de recherche, de surveillance, d'éducation, de formation et de gestion dans le domaine de l'environnement marin méditerranéen. Les listes et renseignements y figurant, proviennent de la compilation des bases de données MARIN et MARPER, gérées et entretenues par l'Unité de coordination d'Athènes, qui continuent à être mises à jour en fonction des nouveaux renseignements reçus. Tous les centres de recherche marine figurant dans les éditions précédentes du Répertoire, ainsi que d'autres figurant dans le Répertoire des océanographes et des centres d'étude du milieu marin dans les Etats arabes du Programme pour les mers régionales du PNUE, dans le Répertoire des organismes coopérant et contribuant aux plans d'action et activités mondiales du Programme pour les océans du PNUE, dans le "Répertoire méditerranéen" de la Fondation René Seydoux de 1991 et sur la liste de diffusion de l'Unité de coordination, ont été contactés. Des questionnaires en anglais et français, accompagnés de directives détaillées, ont été distribués et les institutions qui les ont remplis ont été invitées à communiquer leurs observations et à vérifier les informations avant impression. Dans le présent Répertoire, les institutions sont classées par ordre alphabétique à l'intérieur de chaque pays. Le nom de l'institution est donné en anglais, puis dans sa langue d'origine ou sous une forme translittérée dans cette langue, selon le cas. Le nom des institutions francophones est en français. Le corps du texte est suivi d'un index alphabétique par pays du personnel scientifique et administratif, avec leurs noms, prénoms et spécialités. Seules les institutions dont les activités et spécialités se rapportent directement à l'environnement marin figurent dans le Répertoire. On s'est efforcé d'établir une source de référence complète, exacte et utile des institutions travaillant dans le domaine de l'environnement marin méditerranéen, avec leurs objectifs, spécialités, activités, programmes, matériel et personnel.
