The Snake River Stampede is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. The rodeo grew from a bucking contest in conjunction with the Annual Harvest Festival, in a roped - off arena where the Nampa Post Office now stands. Spectators stood outside the ropes to watch the bronco busters try to ride their horses. It grew every year and, by 1915, in a more controlled ball field setting, several rodeo events were staged and admission was charged. The Nampa rodeo was born. It was called the Rodeo and Buck Show. A more appropriate name, the Snake River Stampede was added in 1937. In 1950 a new state of the art horseshoe shaped stadium was built. After many changes and many years of planning the World-Famous Snake River Stampede moved into a new home in 1997, on the out skirts of Nampa. Today it is ranked among the top 10 regular season Professional Rodeos in the nation and attracts 60,000 spectators every year, boasting a $400,000.00 payoff for the rodeo competitors. Six performances are held indoors, in air-conditioned comfort at The Ford Idaho Center. Stampede for the Cure - 10 Year Anniversary The program is called “Stampede for the Cure” and the rodeo has raised $600,000 since 2006 for this important, life-saving effort in Treasure Valley. • One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. • Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. • Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year. Every woman’s story is different. Yet, that dreaded word “cancer” makes every woman’s story the same. More and more often the outcome is positive and a cure is possible especially in Treasure Valley where there are programs these women can turn to for help in early detection. In spite of all the warnings throughout the media and from doctors, there are numerous reasons why a woman gets to mid life without ever having a mammogram. Maybe she procrastinates, maybe she is afraid of what she might find, or maybe she can’t afford it. Whatever the reason, many women find themselves in their mid to late forties without ever having a mammogram. Women are urged to get yearly mammograms and to do self breast examinations. Although it’s an “in your face” warning, many women ignore it until it is too late. It has been proven that, with early detection, most of them can be completely cured. If you or someone you know is in need, please take advantage of this important program…it’s free and it saves lives.
