Gaughan was a product planning executive in the Central Product Planning Office in the mid 1950s and early 1960s. The office was part of the Product Planning and Design Department (Ford Motor Company) headed by William Clay Ford in the 1950s and 1960s. The Central Product Planning Office supervised product planning activities; coordinated product plans and programs; reviewed product proposals; and provided staff assistance to the Engineering and Product Planning Committee, Styling Committee, and Advance Product Planning Subcommitee. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection is almost wholly comprised of photographs. The Auto Show Photographs series constitutes the vast majority of the collection and consists of hundreds of photographs and a small number of reports originally held in eighteen loose-leaf binders. The material was utilized by the Ford Motor Company Car Product Planning Department to analyze the styling of competitor cars between 1951 and 1967. The photographs were taken at various auto shows including Chicago, Detroit, New York and the General Motors Motorama. Most of the photographs in the collection document "idea" cars, a contemporary term for experimental or concept cars. Also included is one collection of composite photographs showing several Ford and competitor models at similar angles on the same page for comparison. The series also includes some description and a small amount of analysis of the styling of competitor cars. The second series, 1958 Thunderbird Development, consists of one folder of materials from 1955 meetings and discussions involved in planning the 1958 Thunderbird. ARRANGEMENT The collection is arranged in two series: Series I: Auto Show Photographs Series II: 1958 Thunderbird Development Page 4 of 9 P.J.
