The DEIAA and DEAC will scrutinize and recommend the prior environmental clearance of mining of minor minerals on the basis of District Survey Report. This will a model and guiding document which is a compendium of available mineral resources, geographical set up, environmental and ecological set up of the district and replenishment of minerals and is based on data of various departments, published reports, journals and websites. Thane District is a district in the state of Maharashtra in Konkan Division. As per the 2011 Census, it was the most populated district in the nation with 11,060,148 inhabitants, however in August 2014 the district was split into two with the creation of a new Palghar district, leaving the reduced Thane district with a 2011 Census population of 8,070,032. The headquarters of the district is the city of Thane. Other major cities in the district are Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayander, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur, Murbad and Shahapur. This is the most industrialised district in India. On 16 April 1853, the first passenger train service was inaugurated between Bori Bunder (Now renamed Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus ), Mumbai, and Thane. Covering a distance of 34 kilometres, it was hauled by three locomotives: Sa hib, Sindh, and Sultan. Thane, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi are the industrially developed tehsils and mostly urbanized. The district is largely industrialised having 8 MIDC areas, 2 Co-operative Industrial Esta tes. The major industries in the district are Chemical, Automobiles, Pharmaceutical, Artificial fibre, Plastic and Plastic goods, Fertilizers, Insecticides, Paints, Edible items etc. The Thane-Belapur-Kalyan industrial belt is the Centre of highly sophisticated modern industries. The industrial growth in the district, however, is concentrated in this industrial belt. The district can be divided into three distinct parts. The first is the area under direct influence of Mumbai metropolis. This area is more or less suburban to the metropolis and includes Thane, Kalyan, Ambernath and Ulhasnagar talukas where a number of organised modern industries are concentrated. The second zone comprises the industrially developing areas of Bhiwandi. The third part includes the rest of the area of the district having conventional village industries, age-old cottage industries and primary processing agro -industries. The total geographical area of the district is 934 thousands hectares which is 3.11% of the total geographical area of the State. There are 7 talukas i.e. Thane, Bhiwandi, Shahapur, Murbad, Kalyan, Ambernath and Ulhasnagar in the district. Industrial Est ates/Areas: Thane district is industrially developed district. As it is very near to International market city like Mumbai, all infrastructural facilities like Water, Electricity, State & National Highway, Railways are available in the district. GEOGRAPHIC STRUCTURE GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: - Thane District forms a part of North Konkan Region. Which lies between the Sahyadri hills in the east and the Arabian Sea in the West. It has coastal line of about 113 Kms. It lies Between 18°42 ′ and 20°20 ′ North latitudes and 72°45 ′ to 73°48 ′ East longitudes in eastern part of the state Its East -West spread is maximum at the South which is about 100 Kms. The North-south length is approximately 140 Kms. District head quarter Thane is about 25 Kms from the internati onal airport and 35 Kms from the main down town of Mumbai City. Km and it is 1.37% of the total area of the state. If the area is considered, then the district is 3rd in the state. Shahapur Taluka has the highest area out of 7 talukas in the distric t and having 1629 sq km. (38.66 per cent) and the smallest Ulhasnagar taluka having 13 sq.km. (0.31 percent) of the total area. The two talukas Thane and Ulhasnagar are completely urban in the district. DISTRICT BOUNDARIES: - The district is situated between 18°42' and 20°20' north latitudes and 72°45' and 73°48' east longitudes. The revised area of the district is 4,214 km². The district is bounded by Nashik district to the north east, Pune and Ahamadnagar districts to the east, and by Palghar district to the north. The Arabian Sea forms the western boundary, while it is bounded by Mumbai City District and Mumbai Suburban District to the southwest and Raigad District to the south. TOPOGRAPHY:- The district is divided into three parts on the basis of its topography. • The central portion having Sahyadri hill ranges and sloping toward west. • The Central Region covering small hills and platue. • Western part is urbanised and few area is drain by rivers and small streams. HILLS:- The district surrounded by sahadri hill ran ges is eastern part having tranding north -south. And their main slop is towards west and the mountain ranges in the east having high - altitude and gradually decreases in the west. In the central part of the district there are also small mountain ranges. Yeo or and Mama Bhanja are the tourist Hill station in Thane district. (Yeoor Hill Taluka -Thane, District Thane) RIVERS:- The main drainage system in thane district is of dendrtic pattern and the flow is from east to west. Most of the rivers are flowing towar ds west which orginate in shayadri hill ranges. The rivers are Kalu, Sahi, Murbadi, Bhatsa, chor and Kanakvira. All these 6 rivers join and form the major major river Ulhas which joins to the Arebian Sea near Mumbra creek. (Ulhas River Taluka -Kalyan Dist- Thane) SOILS:- According to the type of land, the surface of the ground is mainly divided into two parts. • Black and sand mixed soil is found in Thane taluka. This soil is fertile and it is mainly suitable for the cultivation of rice crop, vegetable and or chids. • Brown lateritic Soil is found in mostly on the coastal stripes of Sahyadri platue. • Soil use for Brick kiln Industries. CLIMATE :- The climate in the thane district is mostly of tropical climate which is very humid and warm. The temperature ranges between 28 to 35 centigrade and the minimum temperature lies between 16 to 26 centigrade. (Malshej Ghat Taluka -Murbad District Thane) CHAPTER – 2 OVERVIEW OF MINING ACTIVITY IN THANE DISTRICT : - There are no major mineral deposits in Thane district. However, the mining activities in the district are confined to quarrying of stones and sand which is carried out in Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambernath, Sahapur, Murbad and Thane Tehsils. In the district the Open cast stone mining shows of vesicular and compact basalt which are explored mainly in Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ambernath talukas. There are a few scattered quarries in Shahapur and Murbad Tahsil. As the district has a rich coastline, the sand mining is classified into creeks and rivers. Sand Mining is mainly done in Creeks of Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan Tahsils. 14 Rivers sites of sand mining have been identified for the year 2018 -19.
