About Us Bloody Mary’s is named after Queen Mary I of England, who is more eloquently known as Bloody Mary following her violent reign and burning of over 280 Protestant martyrs at the steak (or do we mean stake). Many such martyrs are remembered in the names of Christchurch streets and squares, Bishop Hugh Latimer included, his life finalised in a rather fiery affair leaving him somewhat...... well over-done. Forever honoured in the name of Latimer Square the Bishop has been reunited with the Queen in the form of Bloody Mary’s Bar-Lounge-Grill, proving to be a far more complimentary partnership where everything is instead done to perfection - cocktails at the Bar, whisky in the Library and dining at the Grill. The grill menu reflects the primal influence of nature and uses the highly seasonal ingredients to create uncomplicated and approachable cuisine. Bloody Mary’s puts emphasis on ensuring we only use meat we can identify the breed of and farm sourced from, often sourced locally within Canterbury. To complement our menu see enclosed Mary’s extensive and impressive wine list. The list has a strong focus on New Zealand wines, featuring a number of South Island Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc options. Given our penchant for steak, we know all too well it’s hard to go past a big bold red so there are a few varietals from Australia, California and France. At Mary’s we also love our Champagne and have wide selection of by the glass and bottle options. The cocktail list favours the inventive over the classic, with adaptations to the namesake Bloody Mary and a pleasingly large range of spirits, sherry and port; this inspires retiring to Hugh’s Whisky Library for contemplation over a favourite tipple. Containing very few books, the library concentrates on a collection of whiskies with décor to compliment, fashioning a luxurious gentleman’s club. This sexy enclave is the perfect setting for a celebration as is the slightly larger Private Dining Room. For a private affair, you can reserve either and have your very own piece of Mary’s abode.
