It covers the 12-month period from October 2008 to September 2009. The latest results show daily radio listening increasing to 87% - that is 87% of all adults listening every weekday (+1% since August publication). A total of c15,000 people were interviewed during the survey period by TNS mrbi, on behalf of JNLR - Joint National Listenership Research - that is funded by all national, regional and local stations, BAI, AAI, and IAPI. The following tables are the key top line results from the ‘ week-day’ report for the main radio stations at National level, within Dublin and Cork counties, and the South East, South West and North West regions. While Tables 1-4 show the proportion of adults tuning into the stations at some time during the day, the depth of listening or loyalty to various stations is best reflected in the share of listening achieved by each station, as show n in Tables 5-8, whilst Table 9 provides information on the Local Stations in each licensed franchise area. In this report more than half (57%), of the Irish population listen to their local or regional station on a daily basis. This compares to 51% tuning into national radio everyday. (This reflects a marginal increase of 1% to the local/regional sector). Local/regional radio attracts a greater proportion of listeners in the Cork and regional areas (60%+), while in Dublin a larger audience tunes into national radio every day (51% vs 49%). Irish audiences continue to listen to a significant amount of radio daily – on average, listeners tune in for more than 3½ hours per day during the prime 7am to 7pm time (Irish Adults listening Mon-Fri). In terms of share of all minutes listened, national radio and local/regional radio hold an equal share of minutes listened, representing a slight increase for the latter since the August publication. In Dublin however, national radio holds a majority share (59%) while in Cork and the other regions - South West, South East and North West – the local/regional franchise has the majority share (57%, 58%, 55% and 59% respectively). This reflects some change since the August publication – national radio has improved its posi tion in Dublin and the Sth East and local/regional radio improved in the Sth West and Nth West regions. (T5). Among the younger, 15-34 year old audience across the country, local/regional radio maintains its national majority share position at 54% versus 46% for national radio. When we look at the various regions, local radio has a particularly strong share position among this age group in Dublin (64%) and also holds the majority in Cork (57%) and in both the South West (53%), and in the South East regions (57%). However, national radio has somewhat improved its position since the August publication in Dublin, Cork and the Sth West. In the North West region, national radio still has the majority share of minutes, 51%, but the local/regional franchise has increased its share by 3% to 49%. Local radio continues to perform strongly in the individual radio markets across the country – in many areas reaching more than 40% of the local adult population daily. In particular, on the criterion of share of minutes listened during prime 7am to 7pm, Highland Radio, MWR, Radio Kerry and Tipp FM hold a majority share position in their franchise areas. (T9) .
