CASCADE SWIM CLUB The 2013-14 Cascade swimming season was a landmark year for us and many milestones were part of the very successful year. 2013-14 saw Cascade swimmers achieve selection to many international, national junior and youth initiatives and provincial representative teams. The highlight for the Cascade Swim Club was to see Cascade swimmers Morgan Bird, Brooklynn Snodgrass, Yuri Kisil and Russell Wood earn selection to the Canadian National team to attend Commonwealth & Para Commonwealth Games in Glascow, Scotland in July and the Pan / Para Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast in Australia in August. These four swimmers have been with Cascade for many years and are home grown swimmers, swimming under the Blue and Gold during their age group formative years and developed under the Cascade swimming system. Brooklynn, in her first senior national team representation excelled at the Commonwealth Games. Swimming to 8th in the final of the 100 backstroke and then breaking the Canadian Senior national record in the 50 backstroke with the 8th fastest time in the world and winning the BRONZE medal. This result represents the first ever medal and podium by a Cascade swimmer in a major games swimming event. Yuri and Russell became the first Cascade grown swimmers to win senior national championships at the selection trials in Victoria in April. Wood won the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke and Yuri became the youngest swimmer in Canadian history to win the 50 and 100 freestyle championships and break the 50-second barrier in the 100 freestyle. As I write this welcome letter the swimmers are in their final preparations for the Pan Pacs and Emily Wagner, also a home grown Cascade swimmer, will be competing for Canada in The 2nd Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China in the sport of triathlon. As we go forward with our program CASCADE is developing into a strong contributor to the story of swimming on the city, provincial, national and world stage. We are playing in the big leagues of swimming and we can, and we have to, continue to lift our game at all levels in the club. The 2014-15 swimming season is in front of us. In the third year of the quadrennial the calendar for our club season will focus on the Alberta Provincial Championships, the Western Nationals, the Canadian Pan American Games Trials (the Pan Ams are being held in Toronto in July 2015) in April in Toronto, the World Junior 18 and under Trials in July and Senior National and Age National championships. The Age Group section of the program is showing exciting development and many new faces are appearing in the provincial and national rankings across the entire program. The strong Cascade system will bring development of the next generation of Cascade excellence to the forefront as we build toward Tokyo 2020 Wow, what an exciting time for Cascade and swimming. The Cascade system identified and we saw many encouraging quality caliber performances. Winning performances were achieved at the provincial, Age Group National, Far Western, Alberta Summer Games , CIS university swimming, senior national championship and international senior and age group levels. At the National Age Championships in Winnipeg and Far Westerns in California this month the next wave of Cascade swam to some excellent results. National Age Championships gold medals were won by Ingrid Wilm, 16, 50 backstroke, Adrian Szentmiklossy, 14, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle, Alex Katelnikoff, 13, 800 freestyle, and the boys under 13 800 free relay (Katelnikoff, Sebastian Somerset, Isak Nash and Stephen Hou). There were many other podium performances as the next wave of talented swimmers begin to show their prowess on the national and international stage. The Cascade program prides itself on building great people who are also great citizens and representatives of their family, the swim community, their community, Calgary, Alberta, Canada and of course the Cascade Swim Club. With the Cascade model embracing Canada’s sport for life philosophy and Long Term Athlete Development principles the well structured continuum of the program, the excellent coaching of the swimming program offered by Cascade, and the great spirit of the swimmers, their parents and the Board of Directors has positioned Cascade as one of the leading Canadian programs and the industry standard for swimming . Your Cascade swimmers will learn excellent values, life skills and disciplines and as well will be in one the world’s leading swimming performance programs. Led by our excellent senior coaching staff: Wendy Johnson, Ildi Deliu, Marc Tremblay Jasen Pratt, Kristina Crook, Stefan Pripoae and Kimmie Kraft the Cascade program has a strong base of swimmers competing from the grass roots level through to the provincial representative teams, all the way up to the Youth, Junior and Senior Canadian National Teams. Swimmers will experience the wonderful lessons to be learned from being challenged and trained under the tutelage of our staff and will share in the excitement of our cutting edge approach. Looking forward to seeing you on the deck and for a successful continuation of the CASCADE way. !Swimming Faster, Swimming better Dave David M. Johnson ! Director of Swimming and Head Coach ! 2014 - 2015 MEMBERSHIP PACKAGE MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER Welcome to the 2014-2105 Swimming Season! Last season was a pretty exciting one for the club with several swimmers named to the Commonwealth Games Team, the Pan Pacific Championships, the Para Commonwealth Games, the Youth Olympic Games and a number of other provincial and regional teams as well. We had Morgan Bird, Yuri Kisil, Brooklynn Snodgrass and Emily Wagner (to name a few) represent themselves, their country, and this club at the very highest levels in the work and we are all extremely proud of them. Of special mention is the bronze medal won by Brooklynn Snodgrass at the Commonwealth Games in the 50m backstroke - the first senior international medal at this elite level that the club has ever won in its 46 year history! The club also had a lot success last season with our expanded novice program which continues to grow every year and add new young swimmers into the Cascade family. Our “Swim School” programs give them, first and foremost, the needed lifeskill of being able to swim then, second, all the skills that they need to be a successful competitive swimmer. As the numbers continue to grow we are continuing to try and find space for all our swimmers and have been fortunate to gain a little ground at at least one of our facilities this year, the Mount Royal pool. MRU will see an expanded Senior Select presence as well become the home of our new Senior “XT” program that accommodates swimmers and multi-sport athletes looking for top-calibre training outside of the normal competitive aspect of traditional swimming. Cascade has been the home of some of the countries top-triathletes in the country and this new program will allow that fine tradition, in the likes of Canadian Female Triathlete of the year Ellen Pennock, to continue on.
