CLAUDE DEBUSSY SIX ÉPIGRAPHES ANTIQUES BENJAMIN BRITTEN LES ILLUMINATIONS SERGEI RACHMANINOFF SYMPHONIC DANCES IAN BOSTRIDGE ANDRIS NELSONS CONCERTGEBOUW AMSTERDAM CLAUDE DEBUSSY This concert of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - under Six épigraphes antiques the baton of the Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, who made his first appearance with the RCO to great acclaim in 2008 and BENJAMIN BRITTEN who has returned regularly ever since – features a very special Les illuminations, Op. 18 programme with works by Debussy, Britten and Rachmaninoff. Debussy’s Six épigraphes was originally composed for the pia- SERGEI RACHMANINOFF no. In this performance, the Royal Concertgebouw Orches- Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 tra presents the version for orchestra by the Dutch composer Rudolf Escher from 1977. With Britten’s Les illuminations, the orchestra pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of the British composer. The soloist of this work is the celebrated British tenor Conductor Andris Nelsons Ian Bostridge. Britten’s work makes for a nice contrast with the Orchestra Royal Concertgebouw Slavic energy of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, a work of Orchestra genuine symphonic colour and grandeur.
