The date was originally selected to commemorate the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli in 1915, during World War I. The ANZAC forces formed part of an Allied campaign whose goal was to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula and secure a safe route to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire (which was an ally of Germany). Achieving this would open the way to the Black Sea and guarantee safe passage to Russia. What was planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war soon became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight long and costly months. Both sides endured massive losses and great hardships before the Allied forces finally evacuated the peninsula at the end of 1915. Troops from 17 nations fought at Gallipoli, but the following countries suffered the heaviest casualties: Poppies grow wild over the Gallipoli Peninsula Nationality Wounded Killed Australia 26,000 8,000 New Zealand 7,500 2,500 Great Britain 120,000 43,000 France 27,000 8,000 Turkey 218,000 66,000 In 1934, Kemal Ataturk, the former leader of the Turkish armed forces and Turkey’s most prominent statesman, delivered a speech reflecting the respect he held for the brave ANZACs this pilgrimage commemorates. His words serve as a timely reminder of the bond that exists between Turkey, Australia and New Zealand today. His words can be read on the front cover.
