WHAT BOSTON’S BUZZING ABOUT 3.16.15 COLOR-CODED What happens when you mix the music of The White Stripes and Tchaikovsky with world-class dancers and innovative choreography? Find out at the Boston Opera House, which hosts Boston Ballet’s latest repertory program, Shades of Sound (refer to listing, page 13). The performance begins with Chroma, a contemporary piece created by acclaimed choreographer Wayne McGregor set to a score by Joby Talbot, with music arrangements by Jack White of The White Stripes. Centered around the theme of transformation and laden with butterfly imagery, this edition of the family-friendly, one-ring extravaganza features daring trapeze artists, dextrous jugglers and contortionists, blink- and-you’ll-miss-it quick-change artists, adorable animal acts and, of course, enough clowning around to delight circus fans of all ages. FILMDOM’S FRINGE Firmly ensconced in its adolescence, the always weird and occasionally wonderful Boston Underground Film Festival celebrates its 17th edition at Harvard Square’s storied Brattle Theatre March 25–29. Highlighting the latest cutting-edge features and film shorts, this year’s event screens dozens of works in genres ranging from horror and fantasy to action and comedy, as well as cult films from the past. On closing night, the Bacchus Awards are presented to audience and jury favorites. They may not be Academy Awards, but these demonic pink-and-black bunny statuettes would certainly make Oscar nervous. March 23 Get ready to sing along to mega-hit “Sweet Caroline” as quintessential crooner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Neil Diamond comes to Boston for a show at the TD Garden. March 27 & 29 No less than Leonard Bernstein has said of Bach’s monumental oratorio St. Matthew’s Passion that “There is nothing like it in all music.” After sell-out performances in 2012, the Handel and Haydn Society, in the midst of celebrating its bicentennial season, brings the work back to Symphony Hall for two shows.
