Ushering this newsletter as you see, presented with undertaking of colossal degrees. It was a task to accumulate the numerous events and happenings of the past six months and coalesce them into what it is now. The newsletter has grown manifold from its meagre 8 page ancestors to a 24 page child coddled with perseverant efforts from the editorial and design teams. It is a clear testament to our growth, along with that of The Literary Society's. It was the combined efforts of the students of different departments of D Y Patil University that brought about a beautifully successful outcome of the event. On 15th December 2019, fans waited patiently for two hours to hear the opening notes of ‘Sunday, Bloody Sunday’ and as the band continued to follow the sequence of their album, “The Joshua Tree”, the stadium lit up with lights - capturing eyes, hearts and souls of their fans.The Irish superstars added an Indian element to their Mumbai gig as a build-up to their song “Ahimsa” featuring A. R Rahman. Bono, the lead singer, repeatedly talked about the greatness of Mahatma Gandhi and the importance of his values in today's life. This was a concert where the audience consisted of fathers showing their kids that they too were the “cool kids” once upon a time. Janma Jayanti Mahatsov ASMAH FAROOQ WANGDE On 4 December 2019, over 60,000 BAPS devotees, well- wishers and star-studded guests, 750 BAPS swamis and 10,000 volunteers witnessed the spectacular 98th Birthday Celebration of Pramukh Swami Maharaj at the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The evening celebration programme lasted for 4 hours. The celebration featured discussions on challenges society faces and the solutions provided by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The stage programme involved stellar performances by 3,000 boys and youths, video presentations, devotional songs, traditional dances, testimonials and speeches. The programme ended with a 5- minute spectacular show of fireworks with devotees holding diyas as a commemoration to his life-long’s work. 3 Brian Charles Lara OORJA SHARAF "I wanted to inspire young West Indians to pick up the game of cricket and use it to live the better of their lives." So quoted by Brian Lara, "Prince of Trinidad", one of the greatest batsmen of his time, at the D Y Patil Stadium. The event began with the famous sports presenter Radhkrishnan Sreenivasan introducing Brian Lara, upon whom Dr Vijay Patil then conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). Thereby followed an interactive discussion with the students in attendance, and a Q&A session in which the cricketer talked of his previous matches and tales of his cricketer days. The event was concluded by Dr Vijay Patil, who thanked Brian Charles Lara for accepting the invitation and inspiring the students, setting an example of how perseverance, determination and dedication can grant success in the face of insurmountable odds. 4 Walk for Mangroves KASHISH GUPTA, ASMAH FAROOQ WANGDE On 28th December 2019, a Carter Road Clean-Up drive, Walk For Mangroves was organised by the soulfully enthusiastic environmentalists Rajlaxmi Patil and Saher Bhamla. The initiative was a collaboration of Bhamla Foundation and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai that aims at spreading the importance of mangroves as an asset to the environment. Mangroves absorb 50% more CO2 than other trees. The main motive is to gather the young generation to bring about a deserving outcome for the successive generation. D Y Patil University was privileged to volunteer for the same in large numbers. The drive was flagged-off by honourable MLA, Shri Aditya Thackeray and Bollywood Actress, Esha Gupta. Other famous personalities who actively volunteered for the same were Gurmeet Choudhary, RJ Archana Pania and Blogger Siddesh Sharma. With the help of around 500 Volunteers and the BMC, they successfully collected 5 tons of waste. At the end of the day, the volunteers did not just go home with a feeling of content but a sense of responsibility towards the life around us. 5 The President’s Birthday and Inauguration of D Y Patil Healthcare KASHISH GUPTA 17th September 2019 marked the special occasion of our President, Dr. Vijay Patil’s Birthday. It was a day of celebration, for it added a feather in the hospital’s cap, marking the inauguration of D Y Patil Healthcare. This was followed by Sir’s birthday celebration at Pushpanjali Auditorium in the hospital, where students from various D Y colleges presented wonderful band and graceful dance performances. The event ended with a speech by our Honorable President that motivated every student to not just limit themselves to classroom learning but strive hard to become multi-talented leaders of today, considering all the amazing curricular and co-curricular opportunities that D Y provides. D Y Patil University will always wish the best for our President! Diabetes Week ANHAITA PATRA World Diabetics Day was celebrated on the 14th of November, 2019 by the D Y Patil Hospital, organised by the Medicine Department. Following the WHO theme of the year 2019, "Family and Diabetes", a CME was conducted in the Pushpanjali auditorium (1st Floor, Hospital). Other events hosted in the hospital foyer, on the 14th included: 1. Exhibition of Diabetic Diet (by the Dieticians) 2. Poster Presentation regarding World Diabetes (by the 2nd MBBS students) 3. Talk on Detection of Neuropathy in Diabetic Patients (by the Physiotherapy Department) 4. Diabetic detection Camp (by the Diabetes Department). A Diabetology Fellowship Programme, ‘Workshop on Insulin Therapy’, was conducted on 24th November 2019 in the Pushpanjali auditorium. The programme also included presentations from guest speakers. These events helped in spreading awareness about the growing prevalence and problems of diabetes and the possible avenues of treatment. 6 OBGY CME Dermatology GAURAVI RANADE The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department CME along with the Department of Pharmacology SURBHI PADTE conducted the ‘Research Methodology On 1st December 2019, ‘Urticaria Masterclass’ Workshop’ from 22nd to 24th July, 2019 in DY was conducted at DY Patil University, School Patil Hospital. of Medicine by Dr. Kiran Godse, Professor of Organised by Dr. Meena N. Satia (Professor of Department of Dermatology.
