Art in Architecture Student Design Competition Performance Venues Crosby Theatre Santa Fe, New Mexico Surrounded by the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Crosby Theatre is home to the Santa Fe Opera. The open-air theater features a stunning roof that curves to capture the “shape of the sound” and to collect rainwater, which is then stored and used for upkeep around the campus. The entire stage and mezzanine roofs span 26,616 square feet. The Crosby Theatre, named after opera company founder John Crosby, seats 2,128 guests (with additional standing room for 106) from around the world during its July and August opera season. Through the years, more than 1,600 performances have been given on the stage, including a mix of classic works and American and world premieres. O’Neal Plaza Douglasville, Georgia O’Neal Plaza is a major focal point of Downtown Douglasville. A brick plaza, with its cheerful fountain, it is here that the rich treasures of the downtown open up to visitors. Whether it’s taking in a weekend festival or musical entertainment on the plaza stage, O’Neal Plaza is the path that leads to visitors to downtown shops and some of the best dining in the region. Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles, California Known as the largest natural outdoor amphitheater in the country, the Hollywood Bowl is a legendary performance space, public park, and picnic ground. The Beatles, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and many more have all performed on the Bowl’s stage. In order to balance acoustics with design and natural landscape, a number of different shell-designs were used throughout the years; the iconic shell that appears today was created in 1929 and a new shell that improved sound, while keeping the famous look, was added in 2003. The Los Angeles Philharmonic regularly performs at the Bowl. Jay Pritzker Pavilion Chicago, Illinois Designed by famous architect Frank Gehry, Jay Pritzker Pavilion is a stunning installation in Chicago’s Millennium Park and features 120-foot stainless steel ribbons and crisscrossing steel pipes that stretch over the Great Lawn. With a mix of fixed seating and lawn space, more than 11,000 can attend one of the park’s concerts, many of which are free. Home to the Grant Park Music Festival, the concert venue has also welcomed Jewel, Clint Black, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to its stage. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion opened in the summer of 2004 and provides stunning views of Chicago’s skyline. Ravinia Highland Park, Illinois Just north of Chicago, Ravinia brings all manner of classic rock icons, contemporary folk artists, local orchestras, R&B veterans, and much more to Highland Park, Ill., each summer. Considered the oldest outdoor music festival in the U.S., Ravinia is a one-of-a-kind venue with a sweeping lawn where attendees enjoy picnics with their live music. McCall Plaza Plano, Texas McCall Plaza is designed as an outdoor events and music venue complete with a nearly 800- square-foot covered stage and lots of landscaping and parking space for audiences. The stage is completely visible from any angle. However, two main viewpoints are available for performances, depending on the size of the audience. One way fits an audience size of about 150–200 people. The second way faces the parking lot, which is closed down for larger shows, and fits a crowd up to 1,000 people. When not utilized as a performance area, the estimated half-acre plaza is vibrant with folks picnicking or just sitting under the shade enjoying the bustle of Plano’s historic downtown. Elitch Theatre & Garden Denver, Colorado The Historic Elitch Theatre is located at the original Elitch Gardens site in northwest Denver, Colorado. Opened in 1890, it was centerpiece of the park that was the first zoo west of Chicago. The theatre was Denver's first professional theatre, serving as home to America's first and oldest summer-stock theatre company from 1893 until the 1960s. Tanglewood Lenox, Massachusetts Just outside of Boston, Tanglewood Music Center is a Massachusetts landmark. The spacious outdoor music venue is not just the summer home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, but it’s also a hot spot for the year’s top tours from musicians in pop, R&B, rock, blues, country, folk, and much more. The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is Tobin Center San Antonio, Texas situated along the banks of the River in the city’s heart. The River Walk plaza seats 600, however the surrounding terrace, steps and landscape offers flexibility of space and can contain larger audiences.
