Process for Certified candidates who are applying to the Board of Ordained Ministry for Commissioning and Provisional Membership

The following paperwork must be submitted to the DCOM Registrar FOUR weeks prior to your interview with the District Committee on Ordained Ministry. All questions are to be completed regardless of past interviews. If you have answered a question for us in the past, please take a fresh look at the question so that we may see how you have grown.

The Board of Ordained Ministry examines persons in four areas:

 Bible and Theology  Worship and Sacraments  Human Relations and Pastoral Care  Christian Education, Evangelism, and Church Administration

Required paperwork:

1. Application for clergy relationship to the Annual Conference, Form 105 [attached]

2. Biographical Information Form #102 [attached]. A new Biographical form must be submitted each year.

3. Seminary transcript: one half of seminary course work is required, or the Advanced Course of Study transcript, completion of four units (two years) required.

4. Responses to all sixteen questions found in paragraph 324.9 (a-p) of the 2016 Book of Discipline. Aim for clarity of your understanding expressed succinctly. Minimum one page per question. Include your understanding of three fold grace in your reflection upon grace.

5. A written report on how you have fulfilled the recommendations listed in the DCOM letter you received after your last meeting with the committee.

6. Report from your Mentor. Your mentor is also expected to accompany you to your DCOM interview.

7. Report of District Superintendent. 2

8. A manuscript or full transcript of a sermon you have preached recently. With it please provide an MP3 recording in your email to the committee. If that is not possible, please send via regular mail one of the following: a CD or DVD of the entire service. (Audio tapes accepted if no other options available.)

9. A bulletin for the service in which the sermon was preached. Please do not include bulletin inserts.

DCOM will make a recommendation based on this written work and the interview. The interview will cover: Bible and Theology, Worship and Sacraments, Human Relations and Pastoral Care, Christian Education, Evangelism, and Church Administration.

DCOM will focus on fitness and competency as defined by BOOM:

Fitness: Candidate evidences a clear sense of their call to ministry and is able to clearly articulate their personal faith, verbally and in written form. Candidate will demonstrate appropriate maturity level with consideration of age/life/educational experience.

Competency: Candidate demonstrates a basic understanding of theology and United Methodist Church Structure. Candidate shows necessary skills to work with people in constructive ways. Candidate is able to communicate the United Methodist theology and doctrine clearly in written and oral form and evidences the ability to apply gifts and knowledge in practical ways.

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS:

All written work should be reviewed by your Mentor before it is submitted to the District Committee on Ordained Ministry (DCOM). For the glory of Christ and his Church, give attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and the appearance of your document.

Please email all reports four weeks prior to your meeting with the district committee. They become part of your official District Committee on Ministry file.

NOTE: DCOM will not accept faxed materials. Incomplete or late materials will not be accepted after the due date. Your interview will be rescheduled for the following year.
