Breaking Open the Word July 12, 2020 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 103 Gospel MT 13:1-23

Spiritual Reflection: We can walk up and down the aisle of any home improvement store and find bags and bags of seed. This was not the same at the time of Jesus. Seed was a precious commodity. So perhaps the most surprising thing about today’s Gospel is how freely the sower sows. The abundance of seed the sower uses is a sign to us of God’s abundant love.

Spiritual Questions: 1. What type of soil is your heart? 2. What do you do to prepare your heart for God? 3. How much does God love you? 4. What is preventing you from bearing fruit? 5. Who is someone in your life that is bearing much fruit?

Vers also learns that her real name is Carol through August. However, we are Danvers and that the Kree are actually the bad guys in an intergalactic war. Now knowing the still making phone calls and truth, Carol travels to a cloaked Kree ship in order to rescue Skrulls and take out her former ‘virtual visits’. The please call our St. Vincent de Paul Greek word “Metanoia” means to change the way one thinks. For example, when people office phone at 636-779-5616. The word “Metanoia” is translated in most English Bibles as the word God’s loving grace and “repent.” So, when Jesus came to earth, He called people to have a metanoia experience to protection. change the way they were thinking. They were to stop thinking of God as a task master and to begin thinking of God as a loving Father. Knowing what she now knows, Carol cannot go back to her old way of life just as we, knowing what we know about Christ, should not go back to our old sinful way of living.

Spiritual Insight #3 Another spiritual insight in the movie is that it is great to be a human being. While the Kree look down upon Vers for not being fully Kree and not being able to control her emotions, she later learns that having emotions can be a good thing. When Carol fully embraces her humanity, she lets it be known by saying, “I’ve been fighting with one arm tied behind my back, but what happens when I’m finally set free?” Are we reaching our full potential? Spiritual Insight #4 All good coaches will tell you that At the end of the movie, I was really looking forward to a great battle between Yon-Rogg and teamwork is important to win a Carol Danvers. Yon-Rogg gets out of his spaceship and throws his blaster to the side and game. All who serve as Stephen demands to face Carol one on one. Carol’s response caught me completely off guard when she Ministers become part of a team blasts him (doesn’t kill him) and says, “I have nothing to prove to you.” While I missed out on that helps people win life’s another awesome fight scene, I did like the message that Carol, firm in her identity, did not have battles. Our victory parties are to fight. As Catholics we talk about embracing our identity of being the “Beloved” of God so great. God may have a place for then we won’t have to fight either. As the universal Church begins a transition back to the celebration of public liturgies, many are still mindful of the need to practice social distancing and have expressed concerns about using worship aids that have been handled by others. Aware of these concerns, some dioceses are eliminating printed missalettes and encouraging parishioners to download digital editions or to carry a personal worship aid. In response, MAGNIFICAT is offering special $5 subscriptions to enable the faithful to follow the liturgy with personal copies of either a printed or digital edition of MAGNIFICAT.
