Water Polo NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S Highlights Espar scores in third sudden death to secure third national championship for Southern California: In the longest match in National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship history, Southern California rallied from a 3-0 deficit and defeated Stanford, 10-9, in the third sudden-death period to win the 2013 crown May 12 at Harvard. Nineteen-year head coach Jovan Vavic captured his third NCAA crown with the women’s team. It also was the third time both his men’s and women’s teams won titles in the same academic year. Both teams came up with critical defensive stops in the last quarter of regulation, including four saves by Southern California goalkeeper Flora Bolonyai. Southern California finally mustered a pair of goals in the closing two minutes. Hannah Buckling tied the game at six with her third goal with 1:56 remaining. Freshman Anni Espar scored with 45 seconds to go for the Trojans’ first lead of the game. However, with only 12 seconds remaining, Cardinal sophomore Ashley Grossman sent a shot past Bolonyai at the end of a 6-on-5 op- portunity. That forced the first overtime contest in NCAA women’s water polo championship-game history. The overtime, which includes two three-minute periods followed by sudden death, if necessary, was a back-and-forth battle. Southern California junior Kelley Mendoza began the scoring just 36 seconds into the frame on an extra-man chance. Stanford’s Maggie Steffens followed with her second goal to tie the game at eight. In the second three-minute session, Melissa Seidemann notched her third goal of the game to push the Cardinal in front, before the Trojans’ patience on offense allowed Buckling to deliver her game-high fourth score with just 55 seconds remaining on the clock. In the first sudden-death period, neither team was able to score a goal. Deadlocked at nine in the waning moments of the second sud- den death, Stanford had a pair of shot attempts ricochet off the crossbar. It wasn’t until the third sudden death that the Trojans were able to spread the ball around effectively as Espar’s second goal of the day rang off the right post and into the left side of the net to end the match. “This game was really tough,” Espar said. “I missed a lot of shots, too. [Coach Vavic] said it was my time and I trust him, so it was my time. I didn’t want it only for me, but for all my team.” In a rematch of the 2010 and 2012 title games, Southern California defeated two-time defending champion Stanford for the second time in the championship game. “We got beat by an incredible outside shot,” Stanford head coach John Tanner said. “We played great defense. It was just a spectacular shot. We tip our hats off to Espar.” The defensive effort between the pipes was possibly the biggest strength for both teams. Kate Baldoni finished the game with 11 saves for the Cardinal. Bolonyai was named tournament Most Outstanding Player as she turned away 17 attempts for Southern California. “The goalie is the most important person in the game,” Vavic said. “[Bolonyai] always steps up in big games. “We knew Stanford was going to be the team to beat. We needed to believe we could get this job done. It took us quite some time. To win in this fashion, this is going to stay with these players and coaches forever.” 2 NationaL COLLegiate WOMEN’S WateR POLO—RESULts CONSOLATION SEMIFINALS SEVENTH PLACE 2013 Results MAY 11 AT HARVARD MAY 12 AT HARVARD UC San Diego 15, Pomona-Pitzer 8 Pomona-Pitzer 13, Iona 12 FIRST ROUND 1 2 3 4 F 1 2 3 4 F MAY 10 AT HARVARD Pomona-Pitzer ........................ 3 2 3 0 — 8 Pomona-Pitzer ........................ 3 1 4 5 — 13 UC San Diego .......................... 6 4 3 2 — 15 Iona ............................................. 3 3 3 3 — 12 Southern California 27, Pomona-Pitzer 1 1 2 3 4 F Pomona-Pitzer goals: Alyssa Woodward 3, Mahalia Pomona-Pitzer goals: Katy Schaefer 5, Sarah Westcott Prater-Fahey 2, Katy Schaefer, Sallie Walecka, Vicky 3, Alyssa Woodward 2, Chrissie Alving-Trinh, Vicky Pomona-Pitzer ........................ 1 0 0 0 — 1 Gyorffy.
