  • Mojo Magic at Permian
MOJO MAGIC I often get asked the question "which state plays the best football" or "tell me about football in Texas." Since we travel to every state and do so many BFS clinics, this is a natural question. I'm not going to answer the first question because I know there are some amazing high school pro grams in a number of states. In a future article, I hope to write about John Moranto at Massilon High School in Ohio. I did a clinic for John last summer. The tradition and pro gram at Massilon is truly legendary. Valdosta High School in Georgia is equally as impressive. The list could go to perhaps ten to twenty schools but this article will deal with the incredible record established at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. Certainly Texas can lay claim to the best high school football in America and Permian High School can lay claim to being the best of the best. Anyway, Odessa, Texas is football crazy. Everyone has played at one level or another and they want their sons to play. Permian High School has not had a losing season for 22 years. They've only lost 7 games in 8 years and only lost 3 games in the 1980's' This includes playoff games. Permian has the most wins by any school in the last six years. Permian has had four 10-0 records in regular season play in the 1980's. The Conference they play in is so tough, they call it the "Little Southwest Conference." It is an amazing feat to go undefeated in one year, let alone four.

It began in 1988 as a vehicle to recognize outstanding students in their academic areas of study. Students who receive these awards demonstrate that excellence is not only a goal to be attained but an attitude that exudes commitment. It is through this attitude that goals are truly realized and multiplied. Individual excellence benefits both self and society, perpetuates the growth of our democracy and ensures the continued yield of its fruits. As others before them, this year’s 44 students charted a course to do their best. Along the way, the standards they set serve as daily examples for their peers. This very special award honors students for their accomplishments in 9 categories. Award winners were selected by a consensus of teachers from each particular category for academic standing, consistent outstanding performance over a period of years, participation and commitment to excellence within the activities of the discipline and long-range goals of the students.

  • THE ART of CARLOS KLEIBER Carolyn Watson Thesis Submitted In
GESTURE AS COMMUNICATION: THE ART OF CARLOS KLEIBER Carolyn Watson Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Conservatorium of Music University of Sydney May 2012 Statement of Originality I declare that the research presented here is my own original work and has not been submitted to any other institution for the award of a degree. Signed: Carolyn Watson Date: ii Abstract This thesis focuses on the art of orchestral conducting and in particular, the gestural language used by conductors. Aspects such as body posture and movement, eye contact, facial expressions and manual conducting gestures will be considered. These nonverbal forms of expression are the means a conductor uses to communicate with players. Manual conducting gestures are used to show fundamental technical information relating to tempo, dynamics and cues, as well as demonstrating to a degree, musical expression and conveying an interpretation of the musical work. Body posture can communicate authority, leadership, confidence and inspiration. Furthermore, physical gestures such as facial expressions can express a conductor’s mood and demeanour, as well as the emotional content of the music. Orchestral conducting is thus a complex and multifarious art, at the core of which is gesture. These physical facets of conducting will be examined by way of a case study. The conductor chosen as the centrepiece of this study is Austrian conductor, Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004). Hailed by many as the greatest conductor of all time1, Kleiber was a perfectionist with unscrupulously high standards who enjoyed a career with some of the world’s finest orchestras and opera companies including the Vienna Philharmonic, La Scala, Covent Garden, the Met and the Chicago Symphony.
