He was the second of thirteen children (eight boys and five girls) born to Will and Clara Hairston. Will Hairston moved his family from Crawford to the Birmingham area in 1922. The primary reason for the move was to find better work so that he could support his large family. Will became a coal miner and worked alongside Garnett Bankhead who was the father of the five Bankhead brothers who all played in the Negro Leagues. By 1930 Will had gained employment with American Cast Iron and Pipe (ACIPCO) as a laborer in their pipe shop. According to United States census records the Hairston family also lived in North Birmingham and Sayreton. Sam spent his formative years in Hooper City and attended Hooper City High School. Reportedly Sam did not finish high school and when he was 16 he told the employment office at ACIPCO that he was 18 and was given a job working for the company. According to Sam he went to work to help support the family and give his brothers and sisters the opportunity to go to school.

A’s News Clips, Friday, July 30, 2010 Oakland A's can't keep up with powerful Texas Rangers By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune ARLINGTON, Texas — The marquee names did their damage Thursday night for the Texas Rangers, as Michael Young and Josh Hamilton combined for seven hits. Then again, it was home runs from David Murphy and Taylor Teagarden further down in the batting order that sent A's starter Vin Mazzaro to the showers. Texas proved during a 7-4 victory over Oakland that any part of its lineup can punish a pitcher. Right now that's the most glaring difference between the American League West-leading Rangers and the A's, who dropped two of three here and fell 8½ games back in the division. The A's have 61 games left, including 10 against Texas, but their challenge in catching the AL West leaders appears as big as the Lone Star State itself. "We have a lot of baseball left," A's manager Bob Geren said. "We've just got to shake tonight off and get ready for Chicago." The A's begin a three-game series tonight against the White Sox, and it's unlikely they'll have closer Andrew Bailey. An MRI revealed Bailey has a strained intercostal (rib cage) muscle on his right side. The A's haven't decided whether to place the two-time All-Star on the 15-day disabled list. Bailey has missed the past seven games, and when he originally got hurt while delivering a pitch July 20 against the Boston Red Sox, his injury was listed as back spasms.

The Boston Red Sox Thursday, March 19, 2020 * The Boston Globe Due to coronavirus outbreak, baseball’s minor leaguers are caught in a no-man’s land Alex Speier Red Sox minor leaguers worked out and played intrasquad games at the JetBlue Park complex in Fort Myers, Fla., last Friday and left the premises expecting to return for more of the same the next day. But shortly after the players scattered, the team sent out a jarring communiqué: Effective immediately, minor league camp was over. The Red Sox wanted players to collect their belongings from the park and encouraged them to head home. Upon receiving the message, outfielder Tyler Dearden, who spent last year with Single A Greenville, took to Twitter with grim humor. Sooo anybody hiring?? Sincerely, All minor league baseball players right now. “I had no idea what to expect and was kind of trying to make light of the situation,” Dearden said by phone. “But I’m pretty sure that’s a thought that ran through all minor leaguers’ heads when they found out.” Dearden’s tweet inspired dozens of comments, hundreds of retweets, and thousands of likes — many from fellow minor leaguers suddenly wondering about their employment and financial security since the COVID-19 virus led to the shutdown of minor league camps and the chaotic dispersal of players, including the roughly 180 who’d been in Red Sox minor league camp. This past offseason, Dearden lived at home in New Jersey with his parents, offered baseball lessons, and ran food deliveries for DoorDash to help him bridge from his last paycheck at the end of the minor league season to the start of spring training, while also creating a bit of extra money for the coming season.
