Strickler, Jr., a native of Pennsylvania, graduated from Clarion State University.In 1951 he received his doctorate from Stanford University with specialization in aviation higher education. During his long and distinguished career he served as Director, USAF-Civil Air Patrol Aviation Education from 1951 to 1960, and as Director of the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Education Program from 1960 to 1979. From 1973 to 1979, he also worked with the Commonwealth of Independent States (then Soviet Union) as the FAA's representative for scientific and teclmical avia- tion education and training for all facets of civil aviation. He continues today as an international consultant on aviation education matters to industry, government, and all levels of education. Dr. Strickler's many publications and papers are included in libraries around the world. He is frequently called upon to speak at major aviation events and is well known nationally and internationally for his expertise in aviation education. 3 PREF ACE The Federal Aviation Administration's current interests, activities, projects and programs in aviation education represent and stem fram a continuation and expansion of programs and similar initiatives of its predecessor organizations. Present programs are a result of the most recent FAA Administrator's Task Fbrce Report on Aviation Education completed in 1990. The Report identified over fifty aviation education initiatives as appropriate to support the agency's objectives. As of mid-1993, FAA's Aviation Education Division programs use the top ten initiatives of the Task Force Report.This initial Phase I of che Report focuses on FAA's efforts to increase emphasis on the growinc needs of a diverse society and work force. FAA Aviation Education Division programs fall into four categories: - information distribution - educational relations - youth and public education - partnerships with government, industry andeducation Our aviation education activities form a nucleus to help meet current Congressional mandates and help sustain the agency's aviation education mission in support of future requirements of the National Aviation System (NAS). FAA is a part of a United States government-wide effort to assure appropriate federal responses to and support for improving the quality of education in the nation. This organization is known as the Federal Coordinating Council on Science, Engineering and Technology - Committee on Education and Human Resources (FCCSETCEHR).This Aviation Magnet School Gdide represents the kind of effort recommended by the FCCSET- CEHR. FAA's long experience in aviation education proves that programs such as those described in this Gdide, enhance learning and will ultimately ccntribute to a greater awareness of the role of air transportation as well as contribute significantly to improving education in the nation's schools. It is realized that programs outlined in this publication will help attract and motivate a diverse population of young men and waren to qualify for rewarding careers that will help in the design and operation of a safe and efficient future National Aviation System (NAS). The first magnet school, Boston Latin, was actually founded in the 17th Century in 1635. Originally designated to meet the needs of a small intellectual elite, magnet LIchools now serve a twin focus: the improvement of educational quality while increasing racial integration. Meeting our national education goals requires that the performance of our highest achievers be boosted to match or exceed the performance levels of the best students anywhere in the world. The performance of our lowest achievers must also be substantially increased far beyond their current performance. What our best students can now achieve, our average students must be able to achieve by the turn of the century. We must work to ensure that a significant number of students from all races and ethnic groups, both male and female, and students from all income levels are among our best performers. I believe that our aerospace magnets are capable of responding to the needs and aspirations of all of these students."     ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY MILDRED D. TAYLOR NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER Author's Note My father was a master storyteller. He could tell a fine old story that made me hold my sides with rolling laughter and sent happy tears down my cheeks, or a story of stark reality that made me shiver and be grateful for my own warm, secure surroundings. He could tell stories of beauty and grace, stories of gentle dreams, and paint them as vividly as any picture with splashes of character and dialogue. His memory detailed every event of ten or forty years or more before, just as if it had happened yesterday. By the fireside in our northern home or in the South where I was born, I learned a history not then written in books but one passed from generation to generation on the steps of moonlit porches and beside dying fires in one-room houses, a history of great-grandparents and of slavery and of the days following slavery: of those who lived still not free, yet who would not let their spirits be enslaved. From my father the storyteller I learned to respect the past, to respect my own heritage and myself. From my father the man I learned even more, for he was endowed with a special grace that made him tower above other men. He was warm and steadfast, a man whose principles would not bend, and he had within him a rare strength that sustained not only my sister and me and all the family but all those who sought his advice and leaned upon his wisdom.

The second time our house was robbed, it was my brother Nnamabia who faked a break-in and stole my mother’s jewelry. It happened on a Sunday. My parents had traveled to our hometown, Mbaise, to visit our grandparents, so Nnamabia and I went to church alone. He drove my mother’s green Peugeot 504. We sat together in church as we usually did, but we did not nudge each other and stie giggles about somebody’s ugly hat or threadbare caftan, because Nnamabia left without a word after about ten minutes. He came back just before the priest said, “The Mass is ended. Go in peace.” I was a little piqued. I imagined he had gone o to smoke and to see some girl, since he had the car to himself for once, but he could at least have told me where he was going. We drove home in silence and, when he parked in our long driveway, I stopped to pluck some ixora owers while Nnamabia unlocked the front door.
