It was an exciting year for acquisitions and exhibitions at Childs Gallery. Painting Annual 19 offers highlights of these notable works and shows, which span over three centuries, and include artists from the China Trade to current times. This catalogue reflects the truism of our founder’s vision that Childs Gallery is one of “generalists with specialties.” Each successive President, with his unique expertise, scholarship, and vision, has developed a specialty at Childs within the context of a generalist gallery. It is a tradition that continues today, and notable examples of our established specialties, as well as emerging ones, may be seen in the pages that follow. Childs Gallery has a long history in both scholarship and sales of marine paintings. In 1938, Charles D. Childs published the first article on Robert Salmon - “Robert Salmon: A Boston Painter of Ships and Views” – bringing the artist’s works to the attention of New England collectors, along with those of F. H. Lane, Thomas Birch and a host of other American and European marine painters. Similarly, Carl L. Crossman came to Childs Gallery in 1964 with a deep commitment to research in the American China Trade. He published the first volume on Chinese painters for the western market, The China Trade (1972). Continuing the tradition, D. Roger Howlett wrote William Partridge Burpee: American Marine Impressionist (1991) and The Lynn Beach Painters: Art Along the North Shore 1880-1920 (1998.) The latter delves into a group of marine and shore painters active north of Boston (including C. E. L. Green,) who were influenced by the French Impressionist and Dutch Modern schools. We are delighted to have fine examples from many of the artists listed above including Lai Fong, George Savory Wasson, C.E.L. Green and William Partridge Burpee. At the time of going to press, we received word that a Robert Salmon would soon make its way into our inventory as well. These works, and many others, will be featured in an upcoming exhibition on New England marine painting. A major Orientalist painting just passed through our hands and a progression of Luminist and American Impressionist works continue to come through the gallery, including paintings with exotic themes by Waterman, Smith, Chase and Macknight. We also manage many estates, such as Ben Norris, Gertrude Beals Bourne, Donald DeLue, Henry Botkin and Herbert Barnett – some for more than three decades. Childs Gallery has continued its long-term commitment to works by women artists, and has developed an emerging interest in modern and contemporary artists working in the figurative tradition. Our exhibits have featured Marion Greenwood and the Woodstock Artist Association, Anne Lyman Powers: Mid-century Expressionist, and Betty Herbert: America’s Wars. Soon to come is a show on Sally Michel, whose works are as coveted in our gallery as those of husband Milton Avery. We innovated this year in another way, with our first guest curator at Childs, William Stover. His exhibit, Clothes Make the Man? took an unconventional look at clothing and costume in art, juxtaposing significant 16th-20th century works from Childs with selections by innovative contemporary artists from other Boston galleries. And we have introduced younger contemporary artists such as Hannah Barrett and Anthony Moore. All of this is in the long-established goal of our founder: Committing to the traditions of the past with an eye towards the future, looking at existing gallery artists in new ways, and introducing additional living artists into the mix of splendid offerings. richard j. baiano, president
