Frequently Asked Questions

Will Nor-Cal Vans be offering a lowered floor modification on the Ford Transit?  Nor-Cal Vans will not be providing a lowered floor conversion on the new Ford Transit due to several Ford designated "No Drill or Weld” zones throughout the body, floor, and doors of the Transit.  These zones are areas that Ford does not want modified for a variety of reasons, ranging from wiring locations to the possibility of compromising the structural integrity of the vehicle. Altering these areas might cause damage and possibly void the Ford warranty. Because Nor-Cal Vans is a Ford QVM, we strictly adhere to Ford's guidelines.  The Transit chassis also includes sections of high-strength boron steel used in the chassis to add durability to the body. Boron steel cannot be cut or drilled with standard equipment and the presence of boron steel limits the locations of aftermarket seats and wheelchair anchorage systems.

What wheelchair lifts will work in the Ford Transit?  All Ford Transit Wagons come standard with side curtain airbags down the length of the vehicle in compliance with FMVSS 226. These side-curtain airbags affect the installation of side-entry wheelchair lifts. Check with lift manufacturer for current information.  Ford recommends ordering the modified wiring prep package when adding electrical add-ons that draw more than 60 amps (Braun’s standard circuit breaker is 75-amps).  Due to ground clearance issues, the Braun UVL (Under Vehicle Lift) will not be a wheelchair lift option on the Transit.

How do you handle the seating and wheelchair securement in your Transit conversions?  All OEM seating positions have integral lap/shoulder belts. There are no mounting points for shoulder belts or lap belts on the actual van; everything is contained within each seat.  Nor-Cal Vans has designed and tested their wheelchair securement systems and upper shoulder belt anchorages, as well as aftermarket fold-away seating and mounting to meet FMVSS standards. Aftermarket shoulder belt anchorage points could fail if not installed correctly.

What sort of electrical issues should I be aware of with the Transit?  The vehicle battery (or optional dual batteries) is located under the driver seat, along with body control module. B&D Independence has developed a Driver Transfer Seat for the Transit, but the battery will need to be relocated. Contact B&D Independence for further information.

Compliance Testing Nor-Cal Vans successfully crash-tested the Transit Connect with the Nor-Cal Vans Adaptive Van conversion to ensure reliability was not compromised. The crash test was conducted by MGA Research in April 2014. The testing facility subjected the vehicle the following tests in compliance with Ford and Federal requirements:

 30-mph frontal collision  50-mph offset rear impact collision  33.5-mph side impact  5,000-lb wheelchair anchorage test  Second row seat pull (FMVSS 207 and 210)  California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved

Ford’s 2015 Transit Connect already earned a five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the government's highest possible overall rating. This is due in part to its body structure, which is built with light ultra-high strength Boron steel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the spare tire mount optional in the Transit Connect Adaptive Van? As manufacturers we want to be able to provide our customers with a product that we think can best suit their needs. That's why we chose to make a spare tire mount optional.

Mounting the spare tire requires us to modify the driver side wall panel by removing one of the cup holders and a/c vents to make room for the tire and mounting bracket. It also blocks about half of the window. There is still one cup holder and a/c vent on the passenger side. By not mounting the spare tire, the wheelchair position feels more open and provides all the comforts of the vehicle. Mounting the spare tire in the vehicle will also reduce the weight capacity of the vehicle.

Nor-Cal Vans provides as a standard an emergency roadside flat repair kit which includes an inflater and tire sealant that will temporarily repair a flat tire. It's becoming more and more common with factory vehicles. The factory full-size spare tire will be loose loaded into your Transit Connect for you to keep on hand to be replaced if needed.

If you would prefer to have the spare tire mounted inside the Transit Connect, let your sales person know at time of placing order and Nor-Cal Vans can add it for an additional charge.

What are the optional electric locking retracting wheelchair tiedowns with straps? Our standard package comes with Q’Straint QRT Deluxe Retractors that are mounted on L-track ovals so they are removable when not in use.

As an upgrade we offer longer electric locking retractors that allow the front tie-downs to be attached to the wheelchair prior to the wheelchair entering the vehicle. When the power is engaged, they retreat 4 meters out, long enough to reach a chair at the base of the ramp. When the switch is disengaged, the retractors allow for forward movement up the ramp and prevents the wheelchair from rolling backwards.

Does the Adaptive Van conversion affect ground clearance on the Ford Transit Connect? The Nor-Cal Vans Transit Connect Adaptive Van does not affect ground clearance under normal driving conditions.

ADA Quick Tips - Tax Incentives

More than fifty million Americans with disabilities make up a huge, nearly untapped market for businesses of all types and sizes. To help businesses welcome customers with disabilities, the IRS offers two tax incentives to remove access barriers. Unfortunately, many business owners and employers are unaware that these incentives exist. Make sure your business takes advantage of these valuable incentives!

 A Tax Credit for small businesses who provide accessible transportation services or take other steps to improve for customers with disabilities o A tax credit lowers your tax bill dollar for dollar.

 A Tax Deduction for businesses of all sizes that remove access barriers in their vehicles or facilities o A deduction is a reduction in taxable income.

A business that annually incurs eligible expenses to bring itself into compliance with the ADA may use these tax incentives every year. The incentives may be applied to a variety of expenditures. All barrier removal must comply with applicable Federal accessibility standards.

Tax Credit Small businesses with 30 or fewer employees or total revenues of $1 million or less can use the Disabled Access Tax Credit (IRS Code, Section 44; IRD Form 8826). Eligible small businesses that make their vehicles accessible may take a tax credit of up to $5,000 (half of eligible expenses up to $10,250, with no credit for the first $250) to offset their costs for access. A tax credit lowers your tax bill dollar for dollar.

Tax Deduction Businesses of all sizes may take advantage of this tax deduction. Under Internal Revenue Code, Section 190 (IRS Publication: 535, Chapter7), all businesses can take a tax deduction of up to $15,000 per year for costs to make their vehicles accessible. A tax deduction is a reduction in taxable income.

Tax Incentives in Combination These two incentives (tax credit and tax deduction) can be used together by eligible businesses if the expenditures qualify under both IRS Sections 44 and 190. If a small business' expenses exceed $10,250 for the maximum $5,000 tax credit (dollar for dollar), then the tax deduction equals the difference between the total spent and the amount of the tax credit claimed.

Important Facts  California Sales Tax does not apply to the cost of the accessible modifications made to vehicles.  If a credit exceeds the amount of taxes owed, businesses may carry forward the unused portion of the credit to the next year.
