Here we are in September. What a great summer it has been! There were many events that made it fun. Our trip to Nashville, Tennessee for the Imperial Session was a great trip. Congratulations are in order, as our very own Moolah Chanters took home two 1st place trophies. They truly are the “Champions of Imperial”. Great job gentleman! They have been invited again to sing in 2020 at the Imperial Convention in Kansas City. Besides some normal legislation about Temple locations or address changes, we did have some important items pass. One of the biggest items was giving the joint Boards of Directors for Shrine Hospitals for Children and the Local Boards power to make decisions affecting their hospitals and patient care as needed. This eliminates the long wait for Imperial Sessions to come around in order to keep things moving. We have seen this already. The Houston Hospital is moving into the Galveston Hospital to form one location and expand their patient care. In order to do this, the Joint Boards vote independent of each other and require a 2/3 majority each for passage.

Tip of the Fez to PP Dean Isbell who worked very hard and diligent to make the Sportsmans Raffle a success. The members of Moolah too stepped up through ticket sales. They went out selling them and talking up our Shrine and the things we do. I want to send out a special thank you to all the units, clubs and committees that came out the day of the event and worked booths or sold raffle and 50/50 tickets. The Guides, again, did a great job providing and grilling the hot dogs and hamburgers that everyone enjoyed. Also, a big “thank you” to our Shrine Ladies for their recognized participation as well. They were a big help serving food, selling tickets and supporting us in any way they can. This was our third year and we look forward to year number four being bigger and even better!

Moolah had a summer event on August 10th, with Dueling Pianos in the ballroom. This was a fun event. Everyone there sang along, and of course, we got better and louder as the night went on.

So how is the Ballroom going, you ask? Here is what is going on. The new dance floor is in and tile has been laid around the bar locations. The carpeting has been changed on the stage. The last few weeks in August we have seen the main floor carpeting go down. The new lighting controls were installed. Drapes and curtains had been hung. New tables and chairs are on order. So, we are getting close. We have a few minor things still to do, but it looks great. Our committee, along with Wayne Price, has done a great job seeing this project through. These updates are something we all can be proud of.

Central States was held in Sioux City Iowa. Congratulations to all that competed! As usual, Moolah was well represented, and congratulations to all the winners! Next year it is in Springfield MO. This is a great opportunity for you to travel, spend time with your fellow Moolah mem- bers, and root on our units in their competitions. You do not have to compete to go. Come and have fun.

As we approach the end of the year, there are two important events to be aware of. October 26th is the Fall Ceremonial. We are getting the Lodges back into session after the summer break. Please get your candidate’s petitions into the office as soon as you can. First Lady Diane is working on her Ladies trip. It promises to be a fun day. Look for more information in this issue of the Camels Tales. Our Second Ceremonial Master, Jack Melton, is putting together a fun Oktoberfest event he is calling “A Taste of Moolah”. Our units will be asked to put out small servings of their favorite “Tasteful Pairings” of food or beverages. A winner will be picked and awarded a prize. Of course, we will have brats, sauerkraut and potato salad to enjoy in the Oasis afterwards. We will be entertained by our Capital Shrine Club’s community group called Missouri River Bottom Band. We were entertained by them at Capital’s Annual Fish Fry in June, and sounds to be a good time!

The second event is the “Feztival of Trees”. This is something new for Moolah. First Lady Diane, along with Robby and Pam Dirkers, are putting a lot of work into this project. Committees have been formed and they will be looking for volunteers. Let us know if you can help work. We hope you are thinking about what your tree theme will be. Hopefully your units, club or committees have met, secured some sponsors, and are getting things together to showcase your theme. We are very hopeful for lots of participation! Help us get this new event off the ground as we look for this to be an annual family oriented event, only to get bigger each year! For detailed information regarding this event, go to moolah.org and click onto “About” and click into “About Feztival of Trees” and get your Commitment Forms turned in!

As you can see, things are still busy, but with all of your help, many big projects have been taken care of. We will continue to work at get- ting our membership strong. I thank each and every one of you for all that you have done so far in making this a great year for the First Lady Diane and myself.

Fraternally,

Joe Shivley - Circus Chairman (573-778-6117) Ron Reynolds - Circus Director (314-732-2121)

The 2020 Moolah Shrine Circus will be held March 19th through March 22nd. We are again working with the Billy Martin Circus to secure the best acts possible.

We will have our Circus parade in Old Town St. Charles on Saturday, March 7th at 11 AM, followed by the Circus Kickoff at Moolah. We will participate in the St. Patrick Day parade to get exposure for our circus. All Shriners are asked to join in the fun for all these events.

Make sure to get with your sponsors. The earlier you get to the sponsors, the more time they will have to get funds budgeted for our circus. The time to get ads is NOW!

The Circus Committee is meeting on the second Wednesday of each month from September to March in the Guides unit room. Any and all volunteers are welcome to join us. There is always plenty to do. Arrive at 5:30 PM for a light dinner and the meeting begins at 6:00 PM. Please RSVP so we know how much food to prepare. 314-732-2121 or [email protected].

Our goal is to continue to make our circus the best ever, and to keep the seats full. 4 2019 DONATIONS - THANK YOU! Congratulations! We did it! We completed another successful Moolah Shrine Sportsman's Extravaganza! I would like to thank everybody that spread the word, sold tickets, helped prepare, decorate, cooked, served food and beverages and worked the games at the raffle. Without you magnificent sons of guns and lovely ladies we couldn't make it happen.

Like you, I'd like to know the results of the event, but like any big project it takes time to get all the numbers together. The final numbers should be announced soon. What I can tell you is that we did make money. While it appears, we will fall short of our budgeted goal, we will still be able to put a nice chunk toward the Ballroom renovations.

Planning for next year will begin soon and I'd like to expand this to a larger committee and spread out the responsibilities. I am looking for a couple Nobles to fill the following roles: Games Coor- dinator and Prize Coordinator. The Games Coordinator would help decide which games we would have the day of the event and do the pre-planning to have the necessary equipment, supplies and people there. The Prize Coordinator would work with our vendors to determine the prizes and follow through to make sure the event remains organized. If you'd like to take on a role in this event, please let me know. [email protected]

Once again, Thank You, to all who helped in whatever capacity you could.

7 Jeffrey L. Sowder of Toronto, Kansas was elected Imperial Potentate at the 2019 Imperial Session!

Imperial Potentate Jeffrey L. Sowder Jeffrey L. Sowder of Toronto, Kansas, is currently serving his 11th year as a member of the Boards of Directors for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children®. He was elected Imperial Potentate, part of the 12-member body that helps govern the Shriners fraternity, during the Shriners’ 2019 Imperial Session – held in Nashville, Tennessee, June 30 – July 4.

Sowder was raised a Master Mason in 1975 at Toronto Woodson Lodge #121. He served as Master of his lodge in 1981, 1983, 1991 and 1992. After many Grand Lodge appointments, including District Deputy Grand Master, Area Deputy Grand Master, and Chairman of the Grand Lodge Membership Committee, and serving as an appointive Grand Officer on three separate occasions, he was elected Grand Junior arW - den in 1994, and he served as Grand Master of Kansas in 1997.

Sowder became a member of Midian Shriners in Wichita, Kansas, in 1988 and served as the temple’s Potentate in 2004. Sowder has served on many committees at the Imperial level, including the Pilot Implementation Team, Executive Membership Committee, and the Building and Equipment, East/West Shrine Game®, Strategic Planning, Donor Relations, TRAC, Ritual and Leadership Training and Education Seminars Committees. He has also been a presenter at the Imperial Membership, Oriental Guide and Assistant Rabban seminars.

Sowder served as the personal representative for the Wichita Scottish Rite Valley in Wichita from 2006 to 2009. He served on the 8 board of the Kansas Masonic Foundation for 25 years and as its President from 2004 to 2011. Sowder was born and raised on a ranch in Kansas. He operates four separate agricultural-related corporations — a 1,000-head cow/calf operation, a retail feed business serving ranchers throughout the Flint Hills of Kansas, a wholesale cattle mineral business with distribution in four states, and a multifaceted agricultural wholesale/retail business in Wichita.

Sowder and his wife, Cheryl, have been married for 45 years and have two daughters, Stephanie and Lindsay. Stephanie and her husband, Jamie Nelson, live near Toronto, Kansas, with their three children, Corinne, Sutton and Reid. Lindsay is married to John Hill, and they live in Fort Scott, Kansas, with their sons, JJ and Hudson. First Lady Cheryl Sowder Cheryl Sowder grew up in Eureka, Kansas, a town in southeast Kansas with about 2,500 residents. It’s the kind of place where roots are strong; she has only moved once in her life, and that was to the nearby town of Toronto when she married Jeff. In November, they will have been married and lived in that home (which they have made additions to) for 45 years.

Cheryl’s father was the district soil conservationist, and her mother was a secretary for the county health department. Cheryl was something of a tomboy, and enjoyed being outside and playing football and baseball with her older brother, Larry, and his friends. That outdoor spirit remains strong – Cheryl still loves to mow the lawn, work with her flowers and, most especially, go fishing with her grandchildren.

She grew up in a home where family was critically important, and guided by Christian faith and values. She learned the importance of giving to the less fortunate, making good grades in school and having a strong work ethic. Cheryl remembers her mother’s advice: “Anything worth doing is worth doing right, and giving it your all.” It’s easy to see that Cheryl still lives by these principles, as does the entire Sowder family.

Getting to know her future husband When the high school in Toronto closed, Jeff came to the one in Eureka as a freshman. He and Cheryl were aware of each other – she thought he was very smart and a sharp dresser – but it wasn’t until their senior year when they were chemistry lab partners that they began to know one another better. Apparently, he liked to get her in trouble in class. One Saturday evening, Cheryl went to the movies with her girlfriends. Jeff was there, with his brand new car. He had gotten help from Cheryl’s friends to make this “date” happen, as, according to Cheryl, he was afraid to ask her out. He got over that, they started dating, went to the Senior Prom together, and continued to date after high school, when she went to a nearby junior college and he left for college, thinking of possibly becoming an attorney.

College didn’t really suit Jeff; nor did the idea of being a lawyer, sitting inside at a desk all day. He returned home after a year, and went to work for the family feed business (where he still works today – except now it’s four allied firms – and more like a local conglomerate).A year later, after Cheryl graduated from junior college, Jeff proposed. They were married November 24, 1974.

Balancing family and career Cheryl went to a work as a bank teller, taking time off when their daughters were born. In 1996, after working at the bank for 20 years and achieving the rank and responsibilities of vice president, she left to become an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Financial Services in Eureka. After 23 years, Cheryl still loves her work there because it allows her to “protect families, and help them achieve their goals and dreams.”

Cheryl and Jeff raised two daughters who both grew up comfortable around the family business’ steers and heifers, and active in every school sport offered to girls. The girls were surrounded with the love, support and presence of their parents. They are both college graduates with master’s degrees, working, raising their own children, and making a difference in their communities. Stephanie is a teacher and 4-H leader. She and her husband, Jamie, have three children, Corinne, Sutton and Reid. Lindsay is a college volleyball coach. She and her husband, John, have two children, JJ and Hudson. When Cheryl has time, she enjoys nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren, whether it’s making cookies or going fishing.

Supporting Masonry and encouraging the Ladies Cheryl has been a part of Jeff’s Masonic journey for 44 years. She clearly believes in both his leadership abilities and the Masonic values. At every stage, she has worked tirelessly to involve the ladies, and help them see how important their role can be, and what a difference they can make. She has also taken that message to the ladies of our nobles, especially through the ladies’ program of the Membership Seminar, the Oriental Guide and Assistant Rabban Seminars.

As First Lady of Shriners International, Cheryl will continue her efforts to encourage and empower women to make a difference in the lives of children, and to strengthen the Patient Ambassador Program of Shriners Hospitals for Children®, helping these young advocates become better public speak- ers and letting them know how much they are appreciated. She truly believes that our patient ambassadors are the Heroes Among Us.

Imformation and photo provided by www.shrinersinternational.org. 9 10 Introducing the Shriners Hospitals for Children 2019-2020 National Patient Ambassadors Madelyn: Madelyn, now 19, was born 10 weeks early. Doctors told her parents that she was beautiful, healthy, tiny – and was born without her left arm.

Madelyn’s journey with Shriners Hospitals for Children began with her first visit to our St. Louis location, when she was just 3 months old. Throughout her childhood, Madelyn used prosthetics, mainly for balance and to help with various activities. Occupational therapists at the hospi- tal helped Madelyn learn to function and interact in the world. As she grew older, Madelyn began using her prosthetics less often, and by middle school, she opted to stop using them.

In school, Madelyn’s busy schedule included not only her classwork but also competitive swimming, first on a team for children with disabilities, then on her high school team. She also participated in competitive, coed water polo. “Nothing is impossible in my mind," she said. “It’s just the ability to adapt and work around it.”

Madelyn has always devoted herself to advocating and educating. She loves to make YouTube videos showing how to accomplish things using only one arm. At Ability Awareness Week, a program of St. Louis area elementary schools, Madelyn loves to share her story and to explain how Shriners Hospitals for Children changed her life. Drawing from her own experiences of being bullied for having only one arm, Madelyn likes to incorporate antibullying themes into her presentations.

Madelyn is currently a student at Maryville University in St. Louis, where she is very active in student activities, and made the Dean’s List her first two semesters.

“I am incredibly excited to see where this year takes me,” Madelyn said. “I hope to inspire other kids and be able to show them that they can do anything they put their mind to – they might just do it a little bit differently.” Cristian: Cristian, who is now 18, was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. In his first two weeks of life, Cristian had two surgeries and went on to have nearly a dozen more. Cristian faced several of the same challenges of many other patients with spina bifida, including gastrointestinal system and balance difficulties, as well as complications from various surgeries.

For several years, Cristian's family had difficulty finding doctors who understood how to best help him. That all changed one day in 2012, when Cristian met a Shriner who referred him to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Cristian was 13 when he had the surgery that he says changed his life and gave him hope, at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Los Angeles (now Shriners for Children Medical Center — Pasadena).

Devoted to his schoolwork and seminary studies, as well as his part-time job and playing the cello, Cristian has also been active in supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children. He even dedicated his Eagle Scout project to the cause, raising funds to present more than 200 Build-A-Bear toys to the Pasadena medical center.

Cristian is looking forward to his responsibilities as a National Patient Ambassador. “I know that I am who I am because of the Shriners,” he said. “I have been able to see that I can do whatever I want and I can overcome any obstacle that I face. I want to give back to them because of that – because of the life that they’ve given me. Through Shriners Hospitals for Children and the national ambassadorship that I’ve been given, I hope to share a message of positivity and hope to all those who need it.”

We congratulate Cristian and Madelyn, and thank them for their willingness to represent Shriners Hospitals for Children and share their stories. Information & photo provided by shrinersinternational.org 11 Lawrence Jones, PP 5/9/1938-8/6/2019

Grace 2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Standard Bearer for the St. Louis Hospital Shriners Hospitals for Children — St. Louis proudly announces Grace as its patient ambassa- dor standard bearer to the 2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Grace lives in Perryville, Missouri, with her four siblings and her parents, Tim and Dana. Grace was born with pseudar- throsis of the tibia, which in short means “false joint.” At birth, her right leg bowed and she endured many surgeries and braces. However, nothing slows her down.

Grace loves golf, cheerleading and the color guard. Like many other 16-year-old high school students, Grace recently received her driver’s li- cense. She is interested in becoming an X-ray technician. Grace serves as a patient ambassador for Shriners Hospitals for Children — St. Louis and recently completed a training session to help her tell her story to others. 19 Info & photo provided by shrinershospitalsopen.com - Shriners Hospitals for Children Open volunteer info on page 28 Ribbon at Montgomery County Fair Parade for our Motor Patrol last month.
