Matt McMahon was named the 16th head coach marketing. His wife Mary is a former standout for the in Murray State men’s basketball history on June Furman women’s basketball team. The couple has 9, 2015. two daughters, Maris (6) and Mabry (3), and a son, Mason (4). McMahon, who had previously taken the associate head coach position at Louisiana Tech, May 27, came back to Murray State with a wealth of experience in the game and with the Racers. McMahon was an assistant coach to Steve Prohm (now at Iowa State) where he helped the Racers to 104 victories over the last four seasons, including a pair of Ohio Valley Conference championships, a CollegeInsider Tournament Championship and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament quarterfi nals.

The McMahon fi le shows a career arc that pointed to him becoming a head coach sooner rather than later.

When he fi nished his playing career at Appalachian State in 1999, McMahon stayed at his alma mater Matt McMahon for the 1999-00 season and served under head coach . The Racers also set the school an OVC record with a 25-game win streak that was second in the nation. MSU fi nished 29-6 and advanced to the quarterfi nals of the National Invitation Tournament.

In McMahon’s fi rst season with the Racers in 2011-12, he was part of an amazing run that saw the Racers go 31-2, gain a national top-10 ranking and No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Racers won a game in the NCAA’s and were the fi nal undefeated team in the nation at 23-0.

McMahon was involved with the Racers’ 2013-14 season when they won the CollegeInsider Tournament championship and fi nished 23-11.

In his four seasons at MSU, McMahon coached All- OVC performers Isaiah Canaan, Donte Poole, Ivan Aska, Ed Daniel, Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne. Canaan and Payne were OVC Player of the Year selections. At Appalachian State, McMahon coached MVP Donald Sims as well as All- Conference picks Jeremy Clayton and D.J. Thompson. At UNCW, McMahon recruited Adam Smith, a Parade Second Team All-America selection.

McMahon was a two-year starter for the Appalachian State Mountaineers and helped them advance to the NCAA Tournament in the 1999-00 season.

James Kane Assistant Coach 5th Season at MSU James Kane is in his fi fth season with the Murray State men’s basketball program. He begins his AABOUTBOUT JAMESJAMES KANEKANE fi fth season as an assistant coach to rookie head coach Matt McMahon. Kane spent the last four seasons as an assistant to Coach Steve Prohm. Birthdate: December 17, 1982 Hometown: Oakland Park, Fla. Kane is excellent in many areas of basketball including technology as he directs the video Education: Florida (2005) efforts for the Racers. He is also heavily involved in game planning, player development, Degree: Sport Management recruiting and summer camps. High School: Northeast Before coming to MSU, Kane was Alabama’s video coordinator from 2009-11 and served in the same role for two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth, all under Head Coach .

Kane has been part of 104 wins in his four seasons with the Racers. He was part of MSU’s 31-2 campaign in 2011-12 in which the Racers were ranked for 13 weeks and were in the top-10 for the fi rst time in school history. MSU was the only undefeated NCAA D-I road team and was the fi nal undefeated team at 23-0. The Racers were seeded No. 6 in the NCAA Tournament and posted the program’s third win by defeating Colorado State. The Racers set a school and Ohio Valley Conference record with 31 wins.

In 2013-14, Kane was part of the Racer program that was 23-11 and won the CollegeInsider Tournament championship. In 2014-15, the Racers won 25 straight games and became the fi rst in school history and only the second all-time to go undefeated in the Ohio Valley Conference at 16-0. MSU won the OVC regular season title and a pair of games in the National Invitational Tournament and fi nished 29-6.

Kane was part of the program at VCU where he helped the Rams to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. Kane was a graduate assistant at VCU in the 2006-07 season where he was part of the effort that saw VCU make the NCAA Tournament and upset Duke in the fi rst round.

Prior to getting into the college game, Kane spent the 2005-06 season as an intern for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats in basketball operations and scouting analysis.

A native of Oakland Park, Fla., Kane graduated in 2005 from the University of Florida as a merit scholar with a degree in sport management, and a minor in business administration.

In 2006, he earned a master’s degree in sport management from VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership.

Shane Nichols Assistant Coach 1st Season at MSU Shane Nichols is in his fi rst season as assistant coach with the . AABOUTBOUT SHANESHANE NICHOLSNICHOLS Nichols comes to Murray State after assisting at Hofstra under coach Joe Mihalich for the Birthdate: Feb. 16, 1984 last two seasons including a 20 win 2014-15 campaign. He also assisted Mihalich in the Hometown: Radford, Va. 2012-13 season at Niagara. Education: Wofford Degree: Sociology Prior to his move to Niagara, Nichols served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Wofford, High School: Radford where the Terriers advanced to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Family: Brother-Darris Nichols quickly established himself as an outstanding recruiter and developer of talent in the college ranks. He started with an impressive showing as a player and has taken that knowledge and has become a valuable part to a program in teaching the game to the student-athletes he coaches.

Nichols was a quick study under great coaches at Wofford and Joe Mihalich at Hofstra and Niagara.

Nichols earned a degree in sociology from Wofford in 2008 where he was a three-year starter.

As a player at Wofford, he scored 1,482 points in his career and was a multiple All-Southern Conference selection.

Tim Kaine Assistant Coach 1st Season at MSU Tim Kaine (pronounced cane) is in his fi rst season with the Racers as an assistant coach. Hometown: Oak Ridge, Tenn. Education: Winthrop & Austin Peay Kaine has carved out a career in college basketball which includes six seasons at Florida Degree: Sport Management 2002 Atlantic. Prior to his time at Florida Atlantic, Kaine coached at Winthrop, Austin Peay, Health & Performance 2003 Newberry College and Guilford College. High School: Oak Ridge Family: Wife: Jenny Kaine Kaine brings 13 years of college experience to Murray State and will be an asset to the Racer (Ashworth) Daughters: Tory (2), Avery (1mo) team. He is well known and respected in the college game and has served at every level and has been involved in every aspect of running a successful program. Kaine learned a lot about the game from Coach at Georgia Southern and Coach Mike Jarvis at FAU.

Kaine graduated from Winthrop in 2002 with a degree in sports management and then earned a master’s degree in sport management from Austin Peay in 2003.

Before playing at Winthrop, Kaine’s playing career started at UT Martin where he played for Racer coaching legend .

Kaine is married to Jenny Kaine (Ashworth) and the couple has two children, Tory (2) and new born Avery.

Kaine is a native of Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Jewuan Long Graduate Assistant Manager 2nd Season at MSU Jewuan Long is in his second season with Murray State Basketball as graduate assistant AABOUTBOUT JEWUANJEWUAN LONGLONG manager. Birthdate: October 13, 1988 Only a short time removed from an outstanding career as a Racer, Long is a rising talent in Hometown: Jackson, Tenn. Education: Murray State (2012) the coaching ranks. Degree: Civil Engineering Tech High School: Liberty Tech Long has a hand in just about every area of the MSU program including academics, camps, player development, fi lm exchange and practice planning.

As a player for the Racers from 2007-12, Long was one of the fi rst recruits that Coach Billy Kennedy brought to Murray State. After Kennedy left for Texas A&M in 2011, Long played his senior season for Coach Steve Prohm before coming on board as a staff member in 2013.

Long was a leader on MSU’s historic 31-2 squad in 2011-12 that captured the nation’s attention in starting the season 23-0 as the fi nal undefeated team in NCAA D-I. Long was part of the team that spent 13 weeks in the national rankings, including the program’s fi rst ranking in the top-10. Long had his best season as a senior when he was a 43 percent shooter from 3-point range. Known as a lock-down defender, Long was named OVC Defensive Player of the Year.

Long came to Murray State from Liberty Tech High School in Jackson, Tenn., where he won state championships as a junior and senior. He was named Mr. Basketball in 2007 and fi nished as Liberty’s all-time leading scorer with more than 1,500 points.

Long is a 2012 graduate from Murray State with a degree in civil engineering technology. He is working toward a master’s from Murray State in occupational safety & health.
