Kidnapped UK tourists released in DR Congo park

wo British tourists who were kidnapped in the Demo- cratic Republic of Congo have been freed, Foreign Sec- Tretary Boris Johnson said yesterday. Their vehicle was attacked on Friday in the Virunga na- tional park, a famed haven for gorillas and other endangered species. Their guard was killed and their driver was also kid- napped. The Britons were released unharmed, while the driv- er was injured. “I am delighted to announce that two British nationals who were held hostage in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been released,” Johnson said in a statement. “I pay tribute to the DRC authorities and the Congolese In- stitute for Nature Conservation for their tireless help during this terrible case. “My thoughts are now with the family of Virunga Park ranger Rachel Makissa Baraka, who was killed during the kid- napping, and with the injured driver and the released British nationals as they recover from this traumatic incident.” A Foreign Offi ce spokeswoman told AFP that the two Brit- ons were released unharmed and the ministry would contin- ue to provide support to the Britons and their families. One of the most important conservation sites in the world, Virunga Park covers 7,800sq km along a swathe of eastern DR Congo abutting the border with Uganda and Rwanda. Established in 1925, Virunga is home to about a quarter of the world’s population of critically endangered mountain gorillas, as well as to eastern lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, okapis, lions, elephants and hippos. But it is located in DR Congo’s North Kivu province, where armed groups are fi ghting for control of territorial and natu- ral resources, and poaching is a major threat. On April 2, a park ranger died in an attack by armed men while guarding the site of a hydroelectric plant that is under construction. Though they could not identify the exact source, the researchers suspect the thirdhand smoke from these smokers made its way into the classroom and stuck to surfaces there. The compounds were then exposed to another chemical — possibly ammonia from people’s breath or skin, or even cleaning products — and became gaseous again. The Drexel researchers suggest that after becoming gaseous again, smoke residue compounds can attach themselves to tiny air particles that come inside through a building’s central air conditioning system, which in summer months pulls in outside air and chills it. That cooling process condenses water vapour in the air, which primes those outside particles to react with thirdhand smoke gasses. Once the chemicals attach themselves to the air particles, the building’s air distribution carries those chemicals throughout the building, including to the classroom researchers studied. All this means people could be unwittingly exposed to thirdhand smoke in higher volumes than previously thought — even in locations where smoking is banned. Action is needed, considering that thirdhand smoke can create long- term, low-level exposure to chemicals that may constitute signifi cant risks to human health, especially to children and other vulnerable people.
