Artistic / Gymnastique artistique History Historique Sydney SuperDome 16 - 25 SEP 2000 Origin of Gymnastics The sport of gymnastics began with the ancient Greeks, Mesopotamians and Egyptians. Exercises were performed so they could keep fit for warfare. Gymnastics was one of the sports of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 and has been part of every Olympic Games since. Gymnastics Today Today, more than 25 million people around the world participate in the sport. Gymnastics at the Olympic Games Gymnastics has been included in the Olympic calendar since its inception in 1896. In Sydney, there will be three gymnastic disciplines: artistics, rhythmic and trampoline. Trampoline will make its Olympic Games debut at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Trampoline will have two events; men's individual and women's individual. Women's artistic gymnastics, one of the most popular of all Olympic events, involves a four apparatus competition. Men compete on six apparatus. Only women participate in rhythmic gymnastics at the Olympic Games. The discipline was added to the Olympic program at Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual event being held. A group event was added at Atlanta in 1996. A special feature on the gymnastic program for Sydney will be a gymnastics Gala event. This non-medal event is a spectacular presentation featuring 76 of the world's best gymnasts including the Sydney 2000 Olympic gymnastic medallists and a display of all six gymnastic disciplines, including the non-Olympic disciplines and events. Gymnastics in Australia The Australian Gymnastics Union, now the Australian Gymnastics Federation was formed in 1948. Since then, highlights in Australian gymnastics include a 6th place finish in the women's team event at the 1991 World Championships and a 7th place at the 1992 Olympic Games. This was particularly exciting because it was the first Olympic Games for which Australia had qualified a team. In April 1994 Australia hosted the Individual World Championships in Brisbane. This was only the fourth time in the hundred year history of the championships that they had been held outside Europe. The three previous times they were held in North America. GAJDOŠ A. SHORT HISTORICAL NOTES XVI Vol. 11 Issue 3: 355-557 SHORT HISTORICAL NOTES XVI Anton Gajdoš, Bratislava, Slovakia & Ivan Čuk, Faculty of Sport, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia Ph.D. Anton Gajdoš born on 1.6.1940 in Dubriniči (today Ukraine) lives most of his life in Bratislava (ex TCH, nowadays SVK). He comes from gymnastics family (his brother Pavel have world championship medals) and he devoted his life to gymnastics. His last achievement is establishment of Narodna encyklopedia športu Slovenska (www.sportency.sk). Among his passion is collecting photos and signatures of gymnasts. As we tend to forget old champions and important gymnasts, judges and coaches, we decided to publish part of his archive under title Short historical notes. All information on these pages is from Anton’s archives and collected through years. MIROSLAV CERAR (October, 28 1939 Ljubljana, Slovenia) Miroslav Cerar was born to father Ivan (navy officer) and mother Pavla (housekeeper and seamstress). In 1947 he started with gymnastics at TVD Partizan Narodni dom (the first Slovene gymnastics club, established in 1863). His development was extremely fast due to his excellent physical preparation, as he was very flexible and strong. He was between 1958 and 1970 the best gymnast on pommel horse, with great achievements also on other apparatus. He was famous for his scissors and excellent double leg circles, which allowed him to perform Russian circles on pommels.
