44 Kentucky’s Marine Corridors

The US DOT Maritime Administration’s Marine Highway Program consists of over 29,000 nautical miles of commercially navigable waterways including: rivers, bays, channels, the Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Seaway System, coastal, and open‐ ocean routes.

The Secretary of Transportation designated these particular waterways as marine highways because of their ability to provide additional capacity to relieve congested landside routes serving freight and passenger movement. They supplement or connect with landside transportation routes (road or rail line). Each marine highway has a corridor designation that reflects the congested landside route it parallels.

Marine Corridors In Kentucky: • M‐55 on the River • M‐65 on the Tennessee‐Tombigbee Waterway • M‐70 on the Ohio River

Kentucky’s Commercially Navigable Waterways

Kentucky has 1,662 miles of navigable waterways, and 1,020 of those miles are commercially navigable.

Navigable Waterways in Kentucky: • Big Sandy River • Cumberland River • Green River • Kentucky River • Licking River • Mississippi River • Ohio River • Tennessee River

52 Kentucky’s Waterways –US Coast Guard

The US Coast Guard is the coastal defense and maritime law enforcement branch of the United States Armed Forces. Protecting America’s borders is the key to ensuring the free flow of commerce and the safety of our citizens.

Kentucky is located in the Eighth District (New Orleans & St. Louis). The Eighth District is headquartered in New Orleans, and covers all or part of 26 states. The Eighth District protects 900 miles of coastline and 10,300 miles of inland navigable waterways located in their area of responsibility (Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, and Rivers).

USCG Eight District: • 2 of the nation’s busiest ports, New Orleans and Houston. • 2 million+ barrels of oil and 1 million tons of cargo are imported daily into the district. • 15 of the top 25 busiest ports by tonnage are located in the district. • 65+% of the nation’s Liquefied Natural Gas activity and 11% of Crude Oil Refining capacity are located in the Port Arthur/Lake Charles region alone. • 6,500+ oil and gas producing wells, and 130 mobile offshore drilling units in the Gulf of Mexico. • 5 of the top 7 fishing posts in the country are located in the district. They account for nearly 40% of the catch of US commercial fishermen.
