Shell ice on the Tombstone River

Two Sections, Echo and Delta, travelled west to demonstrate Canadian sovereignty at three locations on the Alaska Border. On the Top of the World Highway Echo traversed some extremely steep side hills to reach their objective. Both Sections then headed for the rendezvous point. Concurrently “Charlie”, led by Cpl Bob “Buckbrush” Blanchard, broke trail up the Chandindu to establish a Patrol rendezvous and base camp. Although all the Sections worked hard to accomplish their assigned tasks, the toughest action occurred to the north as the Rangers there negotiated thin shell ice, open water, rough trails and steep terrain. At Cache Creek on the Dempster Highway, Cpl. Richard Nagano’s Alpha Section patrolled west and south on the Lost Patrol route through Seela Pass into the headwaters of the Chandindu and on to the RV location. Several skidoos were damaged, one was sunk in the river and one Ranger was injured when his skidoo fell through shell ice into a hole. The Section wisely opted to return to Dawson via the Yukon River rather than try to retrace their route. It is believed that the last time this route was done by a large group was the recreation of the Lost Patrol by the RCMP in 1996. Just to the south, Bravo’s Rangers moved up the North Klondike past Tombstone and Monolith Mountains and into the Tombstone River drainage. Although they skillfully located and TH scouted the way down the river to the Chandindu, in the end the SATURDAY APRIL 12 2014 terrain proved too steep and too rough to be traveled pulling the sleds and ‘boggans. Operations were based out of a camp located high in the headwaters. A few broken sleds and bruised bodies 1:00PM AT KIAC UPSTAIRS IN THE also resulted from this portion of the exercise.
