The US Embassy’s contribution to the development and preservation of the arts in South Africa as well their continued prioritisation of cultural diplomacy programming between South African artists and their US counterparts was acknowled by Business Arts South Africa in 2016. The Embassy was awarded the 2016 BASA – Diplomacy in the Arts Award for its sustained support of the Market Theatre Foundation.

Market Theatre Foundation CEO, Ismail Mahomed, said, “At the heart of the long-term partnership between the US Embassy and the Market Theatre Foundation is a shared vision which is driven, executed and professionally managed by the Market Theatre’s Artistic Director, James Ngcobo and Fundraiser Penny Morris”.

Over the past five years, the Market Theatre Foundation has received grants from the US Embassy totaling R2,5 million to strengthen and support innovative programming trends built on a partnership that is anchored on a foundation of a shared vision. A significant portion of the FOUNDATION funding has been channeled to create and present productions at the Market Theatre to celebrate the excellence of African-American playwrights and iconic African-American political leadership. The grants have allowed the Market Theatre to produce and present over 10 productions.

30 THE MAN JESUS DATES The Man Jesus, a one-man Friday 13 October - performance of some of the Sunday 5 November 2017 life of Jesus Christ, is a series of TIME monologues by South African- Tuesday - Saturday 20:15 born playwright, Matthew Sunday 15:15 VENUE Hurt and directed by Robert Barney Simon Whitehead and featuring Lebo Toko. The Man Jesus is a deeply personal account of the reaction of those closest – and indeed farthest - from Jesus immediately after the crucifixion and resurrection. It brings simplicity, humour and understanding (or misunderstanding) to the story of Jesus.

The Man Jesus was originally produced in Ireland, where it was nominated for the Irish Times Best New Play, 2013. It will be transposed by Robert Whitehead and Lebo Toko playing a range of characters including-, Judas, Pontius Pilate and Mary, mother of Jesus.

The pressures of the city, unemployment and poverty strip away the husband`s self-esteem and he starts to lose his moral com- pass. He is so desperate to provide for his pregnant wife that he steals a suitcase left on a bus. This action leads to frightening consequences, dramatic turns and unexpected twists.

The Suitcase will feature Siyabonga Twala, Masasa Mbangeni, Des- mond Dube, John Lata, Nokukhan- ya Dlamini, Gugu Shezi, Nomfundo Sambo and Bheki Khoza. The production will be presented at the Market Theatre directly after its 5-city UK tour.

44 ROEL TWIJNSTRA HONOURED WITH DUTCH NATIONAL ORDER Dutch theatre director, author and academic Roel Twijnstra who has made South Africa is home was honoured at the Market Theatre last week by the Embassy of the Netherlands when he was bestowed with the Oranje-Nassau decoration. Twijnstra was recognized for his enormous body of work that has brought Dutch and South African artists to challenge, inspire and collaborate with each others’ creativities. Twijnstra is resident in Durban where he teaches and works with a number of theatre education and developmental organisations.
