MATP Leeds.

The West Specialist Inclusion Centre (SILC) is a large 5 site special school in the west of Leeds. In January 2014 the department for students with Complex and Multiple Learning Needs at the West SILC accredited to Special Olympics and introduced the Motor Activities Training Programme into the weekly timetable as part of the PE provision for their students with Complex and Multiple Learning Needs. This raised the standard of PE provision across the department, a process that was further supported with a £150 donation from National Grid which we spent on equipment. Following on from this beginning the West SILC PE Subject Lead became an MATP tutor through her work with Special Olympics. She has been able to provide training for other special schools in Leeds. MATP Leeds is now a club that involves 4 special schools and approximately 60 athletes and 30 volunteers from all the city.

Representatives from Unite attended our most recent Challenge event. Just over 30 Athletes from 4 different schools from a range of ages across primary and secondary provision took part in what was an extremely successful event.

“……….our pupils had a fantastic time. A beautiful display is going up showing their skills!”

Quote from a teacher who attended with her class.

MATP Leeds will 3 such events in total over the year on a termly basis. There has been extremely positive feedback from teaching staff about these events and other schools from MATP Leeds hope to host such events in the future raising the profile of Special Olympics and MATP in their schools.
