Winter 2010 Rambler 2.Pmd 31st Fest Will Feature Quite an Published by America’s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society • San Diego, CA • www.dixielandjazzfestival.org Awesome Lineup As you can see by the photos , the $5.00 Per Issue Winter, 2010 Vol. XXVIII No. 1 31st Annual San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival features a truly awesome assemblage of talent! The Festival, which takes place Nov. 24-28, 2010 at the Town & Country Resort and Convention 2010 Lineup Center (500 Hotel Circle North in San Diego’s Hotel Circle) includes a mix of A Taste of What Awaits in November new and time-tested favorites.... Dave Bennett was a smash hit at the 2009 Festival, whether playing glorious Goodman-style clarinet with his Quartet or pounding the piano á la Jerry Lee Lewis with the Memphis Boys. We are very pleased to welcome back Dave and his Quartet to the 31st Annual Fest. One of the best-loved traditional jazz bands, the High Sierra Jazz Band, will once again play to full houses and standing ovations. Likewise, the fabulous sounds of Cornet Chop Suey are sure to fill our venues again and Tom Rigney and Flambeau Dave Bennett again. New in 2010, Tom Rigney and Flambeau, bring the sounds of Mardi Gras to America’s Finest City. Tom Rigney’s jaw-dropping fiddle features and the band’s irresistible beat on Cajun and Zydeco tunes have made them a “must” on the festival circuit. In 2009, we missed having Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition. We promise they will make their Thanksgiving Festival debut in 2010! continued on p. 4 The AFCDJS Cornet Chop Suey Tim Laughlin Monthly Concert Series All concerts take place on the Third Sunday of the Month except Dec. • Ii H. Ragtime – the Dave Willmorth/Maple Leaf Club Archive
II H. RAGTIME – THE DAVE WILLMORTH/MAPLE LEAF CLUB ARCHIVE It is seldom that a single musical archive could be described as “definitive,” but this collection of musical materials devoted to, and documenting, the rediscovery, re- examination, and renewal of classic American ragtime in the period of roughly the 1960s to the 1990s is a monument to the enthusiasm and sustained interest of a group of researchers, including Dave Willmorth, associated with the Maple Leaf Club of Los Angeles. The archive, consisting of more than 800 cassettes and nearly 300 reel to reel tapes, includes examples of the playing of younger ragtime performers, as well as performances by the older generation of performers and interpreters. There is extensive presentation of the music of the last surviving major ragtime composer, Joseph Lamb, as well as newly composed rags by dozens of writers, from obscure beginners to established classical artists like William Bolcom. To extend the range of the material there are examples of earlier related recordings by jazz artists like Jelly Roll Morton. The archive is an incomparable resource for anyone interested not only in ragtime, but in American popular culture itself. A partial list of artists represented: Joseph Lamb, Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Earl Hines, Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Itzak Perlman, Andre Previn, Jean Pierre Rampal, William Bolcomb, Brun Campbell, Trebor Tichenor, David Thomas Roberts, John Arpin, Max Morath, Knocky Parker, Bob Darch, Frank French, Joshua Rifkin, John Arpin. Also in the archive are recordings of most of the major ragtime festivals in the 1970s to 1990s, including the major festival at Sedalia, Missouri, and the important Toronto festival.

1 The CORNET & TRUMPET of ROBERT LEO HACKETT “BOBBY” Solographers: Jan Evensmo & Per Borthen Last update: Feb. 17, 2020 2 Born: Providence, Rhode Island, Jan. 31, 1915 Died: Chatham, Massachusetts, June 7, 1976 Introduction: The beauty of Bobby Hackett’s trumpet and cornet made a lasting impression on all of us back in the old days. These authors’ first encounter with this brilliant artist was through his participation at the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert. To collect all his records ha s become an obsession! Early history: One of nine children, his father was a railroad blacksmith. Played guitar, violin, and occasionally cornet whilst still at school. Left school at 14 to play in a local Chinese restaurant with Benny Resh’s sextet (on guitar), stayed for three months, then played banjo in Charlie Culverwell’s bigband at the Rhodes Ballroom. On guitar and violin with Billy Lossez’s band at the Hotel Biltmore, Providence, then with Herb Marsh band at Onondaga Hotel, Syracuse. During the summer of 1933 played guitar and violin in Payson Re’s band in Falmouth, Massachusetts, then in trio (with Pee Wee Russell and Teddy Roy) at the Crescent Club, Boston, mainly on cornet. Played cornet with Teddy Roy’s band during summer residency at Cape Cod (1934), later that year rejoined Billy Lossez’s band in Providence. Early in 1936 joined Herb Marsh’s septet at the Theatrical Club, Boston (on guitar and cornet), from May 1936 led own band at the same venue and specialized on cornet. Moved to New York, sat-in with Joe Marsala in March 1937, then ‘gigged’ with Lester and Howard Lanin, Meyer Davis, etc., before joining Marsala at the Hickory house on Oct.
