Given the global COVID 19 crisis in the spring of 2020, ASM launched Virtual School on March 12, 2020. ASM did so in collaboration with other international schools in Spain and world-wide. ASM’s Virtual School model utilized a balance of synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences and made use of the school’s existing structures and resources. ASM’s wide-spread and long term use of Google Classroom and other resources made for a smooth transition given the extraordinary circumstances. Students participated in a full range of learning experiences and ASM, to the greatest extent possible, maintained our Honor Code and full academic expectations in all courses during this time. Our experience has shown us that not only did learning continue, but that students at all levels took responsibility for their learning in ways we did not anticipate. School closure was a massively disruptive event, but it also generated a real context for learning, problem solving, and initiative and ASM students rose to the challenge. — Ben Weinberg Headmaster
