1 PROTECTION ISSUES

HIGHLIGHTS

• 433 communities were covered in Hama governorate with one or more protection issues. • 76% of covered communities reported child labor preventing school attendance as occurring and 74% of covered communities reported lack/loss of civil documentation as occurring. • Men and women are particularly affected by economic exploitation with 6% and 5% covered communities identifying it as a “very common” issue for these population groups respectively. • 83% of covered communities described reliance on humanitarian assistance as a coping mechanism that was used at least "sometimes" by one or more population groups. • 54% of covered communities described children dropping out of school to work as a coping mechanism “sometimes” used by one or more population groups and 48% mentioned early marriage as a coping mechanism “sometimes” used by one or more population groups. • Movement restrictions were reported as occurring in 38% of covered communities. Out of those, 70% covered communities reported activities of armed groups and 67% mentioned screening processes among causes while girls moving alone (70%), men, people without civil documentation and women moving alone (69%) were mentioned as the most affected groups by movement restrictions. • Needs for protection services were identified for all population groups, in particular psychosocial services (67% covered communities reported it was needed but not present for one or more population groups), community centers, recreational activities and care/mechanisms for elderly people (65% covered communities reported it was needed but not present for one or more population groups). • 48% of covered communities reported concerns with humanitarian assistance. Out of the total covered, 145 communities indicated that the assistance delivered was not “what the community needed” and 129 communities mentioned the request for documentation to access assistance as a concern. • Among covered communities having reported lack/loss of civil documentation as occurring, 69% indicated “loss” among causes while 81% reported that restricted freedom of movement as one consequence. • Among documents that were described as difficult to obtain in the community, passports and Syrian IDs were respectively mentioned by 52% and 51% of covered communities having reported lack/loss of civil documentation as occurring. • 52% of covered communities reported housing, land and property issues as occurring. Out of those, 66% identified “disputed ownership” and 61% mentioned “lack of documents” as HLP concerns happening “sometimes”.
