AN INNOVATIVE PLATFORM FOR TRANSATLANTIC COOPERATION

The German Canadian Concourse has a track record of bringing together thought leaders and decision-makers on up-to-date innovative topics with a relevance to Canada and Germany. The GCC is a conference series in the spirit of the recent declaration by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and Canada's National Research Council (NRC) on strengthening German-Canadian cooperation on innovative projects. The GCC is an established format to foster the process of connecting German and Canadian initiatives. With German-Canadian exchange expected to be boosted by the newly-signed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the GCC aims to expand its platform for showcasing successful examples of cooperation and for launching further collaboration between the two countries. 2016 marks the fifth instalment of the unique Transatlantic Symposium which realizes the German-Canadian exchange in real-time; though it is the first appearance of the German Canadian Concourse in Atlantic Canada, specifically in Halifax, for a conference on Ocean Data Analytics right at Canada’s ocean innovation epicentre. Welcome to GCC #5.

dived into a vast ocean of research and industry activities related to the maritime big data challenge. German-Canadian joint projects play an important role in the development of analytical systems which provide maritime players with enhanced decision-making tools on the basis of intelligent fusion of ocean data from different sources. Focusing on the value-creation chain in ocean data, starting at earth and ocean observation down to the development of analytical tools, the GCC will explore new fields for enterprises. A prime example is the PASSAGES project under Airbus Defence and Space’s lead, in cooperation with Dalhousie University in Halifax, jointly funded by BMWi and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. It demonstrates a data fusion concept for better situational awareness in the arctic sea and is a beacon project for the German government in line with the National Masterplan for Maritime Technologies. GREETINGS FROM CANADA’S AMBASSADOR TO GERMANY

I congratulate the Canada Meets Germany Network on their partnerships with public sector organizations like the Institute for Ocean Research and Enterprise and the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship. I also applaud the decision to partner with the private sector, since their contribution to collecting data and implementing technological solutions is essential. We in the Embassy of Canada are particularly conscious of how cooperation like this underpins the broader success that the recently-signed Canada and European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, otherwise known as CETA, will bring. This agreement is a key part of our bilateral future. It will open new market opportunities for companies in both Canada and Germany while creating new jobs and contributing to economic growth. The CETA also secures enhanced cooperation on environmental issues, as well as on science, technology, research and innovation – subjects Her Excellency Marie Gervais-Vidricaire at the centre of today’s discussion. Ambassador of Canada to Germany In the spirit of such free trade, in this case of ideas, I encourage you to continue to work on our bilateral partnerships. We have much to learn from one another. Dear members of the Canada Meets Germany Network, It is my pleasure to be patron of the German Canadian Concourse 2016, which brings together a transatlantic network of professionals to discuss the subject of ocean analytics and its potential for partnerships in business and research. For the fifth time, this conference is the result of a successful cooperation between the Canada Meets Germany Network and the Embassy of Canada. The state of the world’s oceans is an important indicator of the overall health of the planet. The oceans off the coasts of Canada - Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic - comprise some of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Canada and Germany have a shared responsibility to contribute to maintaining the integrity of marine ecosystems and researchers on both sides of the Atlantic are making important progress in understanding the complexity of our oceans. But we need to invest more time and resources in this important field of maritime research. I am very pleased to see the members of the Canada Meets Germany Network addressing this topic. This is an opportunity to learn from each other and to increase transatlantic business, as well as research collaboration and cooperation, again bridging the Atlantic by holding this conference simultaneously in Halifax and Berlin.

GREETINGS FROM GERMANY’S AMBASSADOR TO CANADA

Now it is time to combine the data that we gather to broaden our knowledge and deepen our understanding of the ocean as a resource that has to be maintained sustainably. This link is best to be done by Ocean Analytics, combining ocean sciences with data management. Here lies the potential for innovative approaches, interdisciplinary measurements and economic growth. It is a field that still has to be fully established and embraced by researchers and entrepreneurs. New businesses can evolve and should do so in a global perspective. This is not an area where individual His Excellency Werner Wnendt countries can succeed singlehandedly; we need the Ambassador of Germany to Canada international framework to achieve the big picture. Canada and Germany are two of the most important players in this field. Together we bridge the Atlantic with Dear Friends and Supporters of the German Canadian major ports, from Halifax to Hamburg. And that is what Concourse, this year’s Concourse is all about. Let us find new ways to collaborate and develop innovative approaches to It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 5th German global challenges. Canadian Concourse. There already exists a close cooperation between the Dalhousie University in Halifax and three Helmholtz Centres in Germany, the GEOMAR in Kiel, the Alfred- Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven and the Geological Research Centre in Potsdam. In 2012, the German Chancellor signed a MoU between the Halifax Marine Research Institute and the Helmholtz Association, enabling this partnership to grow ever since. A confirmation of the excellence of this scientific cooperation is that Dalhousie University is receiving a part of the “Canada First Research Excellence Fund” for the Safe and Sustainable Development of the Ocean Frontier. Furthermore, I want to highlight the Canada-Germany Joint Doctoral Program between the Transatlantic Ocean System Science and Technology research School of Dalhousie University and the Helmholtz Research School for Ocean System Science and Technology in Kiel, Germany. It enables graduate students from both countries to cooperate closely and lays the groundwork for a transatlantic network of future scientists. On my last visit to Dalhousie University at the beginning of October I had the pleasure to meet students involved in this program.

GREETINGS FROM BREMEN, THE CITY OF SPACE

Earth observation is important for solving today’s problems, not only in the area of maritime safety, but also with respect to environmental issues and disaster management. In my opinion, satellite-based earth observation is a crucial factor for being able to find solutions to problems of mankind. However, space technologies in general are applicable for many other areas and sectors. Therefore, the policy of the government of Bremen recognizes this and supports the space industry as one of the core industries in Bremen. One important factor is the link between space industries and research institutions as it Senator Martin Günthner is the key to creating research-to-business technology Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Ports transfer, being innovative and fostering international of the Federal State of Bremen collaboration. This year’s concourse, once again, will bring together Space in Bremen starts with the ocean. The Hanseatic participants from research and business, from the City of Bremen has a long-standing tradition in trade and space and the maritime industries as well as from seafaring dating back many centuries. The maritime Canada and Germany and thus help to generate the new industries have remained one of the main pillars of innovative ideas we need. I wish you a successful Bremen’s economy. Nowadays they strongly connect to conference. the Bremen space startup scene also regarded as the Silicon Valley of European space industries. The motto of the Bremen merchants is “buten un binnen - wagen un winnen” which means “at home and abroad – dare and win”. This is symbolic also for business within the space industries and the importance of international cooperation in order to find solutions for the challenges we face together. Space projects are technology drivers and solve problems in many other fields. For example, Bremen as a traditional port location is concentrating its activities on maritime safety issues. Projects like MARSAT are bringing together competences from deep sea up to space. They emphasize research and practical applications alike in the field of maritime security through a collaboration of several companies and the DLR Maritime Safety and Security Lab in Bremen.

GREETINGS FROM THE DEUTSCHE

With Ocean Data Analytics we might be able to open up a new industrial niche and thus assume a pioneering role. Therefore I’m glad that the conference will bring together experts in this field to share their perspectives, facilitate or further cooperation and strengthen their network. Now I am looking forward to an eventful day with many discussions and new suggestions. I’m sure both our countries will greatly benefit from the GCC 2016. Best regards, Klaus-Peter Flosbach

Klaus-Peter Flosbach, MdB Chairman of the German-Canadian Parliamentary Friendship Group

Dear distinguished guests of the German Canadian Concourse 2016, I am glad to welcome you to this year’s German Canadian Concourse about the topic “Across the Data Pond – Analysing a Sea of Ocean Data”. As chairman of the German-Canadian Parliamentary Friendship Group, I am looking forward to an informative and communicative day to strengthen the German-Canadian cooperation. Ocean Data Analytics is very important in our days because sea currents, tides, storm surges and floods should always be predicted and therefore we need a good analytical method in our countries. Canada is mostly surrounded by the sea and also Germany has a coastal area at the North- and Baltic Sea and so both countries have access to large seas. Looking back on existing cooperation, such as research and educational exchanges, it is a great idea to work together in the Ocean Data Analysis, too. Our countries would thereby benefit from the know-how and the scientific research of each other. Existing and developing companies in Canada and Germany will benefit from the new network of ocean analytics as well.

MATCH-MAKING AND NETWORKING TOOLS

The German Canadian Concourse is about match-making and networking. Bringing together German and Canadian thought leaders from relevant industries, academic institutions and the public sector during the day-long event creates a unique opportunity to generate transatlantic linkages between participants. The German Canadian Concourse format, which traditionally uses a live video-link connecting the German and Canadian Concourse Hubs during the Transatlantic Symposium, now also offers a custom match-making service built into the conference itself. As part of this service, attendants at the GCC will have access to participant profiles generated during the registration (and presented in this brochure under section “List of Participants”) to get in contact with people in the audience with matching interests.

VIRTUAL NETWORKING CHATROOMS

The outreach to conversation partners at a Concourse Hub across the Atlantic is facilitated through two virtual chatrooms. At both symposium locations, two video booths are connected to the chatrooms. During networking lunches and coffee breaks, the GCC community is invited to experiment with the chatrooms and to engage in virtual transatlantic networking. The chatrooms are implemented using the web-based appear.in platform. They can be accessed with a browser (or the appear.in smartphone app) by typing in the respective web address shown in the chatroom description below. Get started and connect to a discussion with the other GCC Hub. Bring your smartphone to the coffee table and invite people to take part in an exciting new networking experience, brought to you by the German Canadian Concourse.
