1. Introduction from the Chair, Apologies, Minutes, Chair’s Report

Queensland Chair, Paul Watson welcomed attendees and gave a brief report on AAA Board activities and general AAA business.

The Minutes from the June 2019 QLD Division Meeting were adopted.

2. Welcome to Gladstone

Peter Friel, GM Operations, Gladstone Regional Council welcomed attendees to Gladstone and gave an update on Gladstone Airport, including current initiatives and projects.

3. Smiths Detection Update

Michael Burgener, Regional Sales Manager, Smiths Detection (Smiths) gave a short update on current live trials of security screening equipment at major as well as the current tender environment.

Michael encouraged airports to contact Smiths as soon as possible if they wanted to order security screening equipment – lead times are currently 6 months on most equipment.

4. AAA Update

Samantha Leighton, Policy Manager, Australian Airports Association (AAA) gave a presentation to attendees which included:

5. Around the Tarmacs

Brisbane: new parallel – open mid next year; M(ike) taxiway overlay; AGL pot and duct project; gable road upgrade: domestic & international terminal update; multilevel carpark; new industrial estate; auto-mall.

Cairns & Mackay: domestic down by 3%; Mackay numbers up - mining boom, AGL-LED upgrade; runway overlay May next year; security upgrades; ESG; PFAS.

Gold Coast: southern terminal expansion; passengers down 2% STLY; airport hotel (Rydges); external passenger zone initiative; TXWY E connection; TXWY E and displayed threshold overlay; concrete pads across RPT apron parking; existing terminal refurbishment to match the new terminal; 2 x therapy dogs in terminal.

Rockhampton: passenger numbers 560,000 plateau; operation Talisman Sabre 2019; Singapore ‘Wallaby exercise”; Antonov arrival with helicopter; international charter; new terminal design – security equipment; power supply upgrade.

Townsville: passenger numbers flat; there has been a small boost following flood; terminal refresh; additional 1 outlet (project alive); security upgrade; defence doing 400mtr runway extension.

Mt Isa: 10% passenger growth; rejuvenation of runway; terminal refurbishment.

Longreach: passenger numbers flat with little projection for growth.

Banana Shire Council: decline in passenger numbers; steady numbers for charters; facilities upgrade.

Sunshine Coast: 5.8% growth; new runway on track May 20; PFAS issues on-site; Draft Master Plan released September; 400 submissions; 5 x new executives appointed.

Emerald: master plan just approved; fencing, re-sheeting, helipad; passenger numbers slow decline; huge building works to accommodate screening; runway overlay this year; looking to upgrade car park equipment.

Bundaberg: Talisman Sabre 2019; passenger number decline; infrastructure upgrades; RFDS hanger upgrade.

Horne Island: 130,000 passengers; 40,000 movements per annum; apron upgrades.

Gladstone: staff changes; air-con system; new back-up generators; CCTV upgrade; car park equipment upgrade.

6. MOS 139 Update

Jason Rainbird, Section Manager, Aerodromes, CASA gave an update on the implementation phase of the new MOS Part 139.

The presentation focused on the important area of grandfathering, as well how to reach CASA with any enquires.

7. Virtual Driving at

Peter Dunlop, Head of Airside Operations, Brisbane Airport gave a presentation on the Virtual Driving initiative at Brisbane Airport.

Peter narrated a video of ARO staff undertaking airside driver training and completing virtual airside inspections using the program.

8. Aerodrome Sector Risk Profile

Fred Fernandes, Section Manager Strategic Safety Analysis, Coordination and Safety Systems, CASA presented on the current work being undertaken to publish the recently drafted Aerodrome Sector Risk Profile for regional airports.

The AAA suggested that the Sector Risk Profile (once finalised and published by CASA) would be a valuable template for regional airports to use to complete their SMS (or equivalent).

CASA will notify AAA once this document has been finalised and published.

9. Queensland Airports Update

Lucy Ardern, General Manager, Corporate Relations, Queensland Airport Limited gave an update on the current projects and initiatives of Queensland Airports Ltd.

11. Renewables on Airports

Matt Shepherd, Senior Aviation Consultant; To70 Aviation () gave a presentation on Renewables on Airports.

The presentation focussed on Airspace design, solar panel use and the use of Windfarms on or near airports.

12. Gladstone Airport

Mark Cachia, Chief Executive Officer, Gladstone Airport gave a short update on the work he had undertaken so far in his new role, as well as thanking everyone for their attendance
