2019 BEEF DIRECTORY INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Dovea Genetics 2019 Beef Directory. We have our best ever selection of beef bulls in this directory. We have a beef bull that will suit all farming systems with the directory containing a wide and diverse range of easy calving bulls, terminal bulls and maternal bull across all breeds.

The directory contains a number of new exciting bulls that will complement our existing panel of proven bulls. The success of our beef breeding programme is evident in this directory with a number of high index bulls on either terminal or replacement index across the breeds. It is important that you select the correct bull for your farming system so we suggest you talk to one of our Area Representatives to ensure you maximise the value of your offspring.

At the time of publication the beef industry in Ireland is under severe pressure. The suckler herd is of vital importance to rural economies across Ireland. D EUROSTAR EVALUATIONS From January 2019 the ICBF will publish Eurostar figures bimonthly. The genetic U evaluations will now be published in January, March, May, July, September and November each year. Dovea Genetics will update our website www.doveagenetics.ie and other social C media platforms after each Eurostar evaluation to give you the latest information on all the bulls in this directory. T DOVEA STRAWS FOR ACTION I A new initiative will see Dovea Genetics donate €1 from each semen straw sold off the Limousin bull Ewdenvale Ivor (LM2014) and the high EBI bull Beechnut Dovea (FR4673) O from the 1st January up to mid-September 2019. The Myostatin gene is found in all mammals and influences the production of a protein that controls muscle development. Natural mutations of the gene produce proteins that are less effective at controlling muscle development, which results in increased muscle mass. There are nine known mutations of the Myostatin gene in cattle, some of which are breed specific and others which affect more than one breed. Variant F94L This is the most frequently occurring Myostatin variant. F94L increases the size of muscle fibres with no associated increase in calving difficulty, lowered fertility or longevity.

As a result of the high frequency of this gene in the Limousin population, most animals have double copies and exhibit its characteristics; increased muscle mass without increased calving difficulties, lowered fertility or longevity. Variant nt821 M This variant is recessive and is carried by a lower proportion of animals in the breed. Animals Y that are homozygous recessive (two copies of the nt821) will exhibit characteristics of the condition, hence larger loin depths, reduced fat depths and large, rounded rump and thighs. O However, unlike F94L, homozygous animals may also have slightly heavier birth weights S bringing with it the potential for more difficult calving. T If animals are heterozygous with F94L (i.e. F94L/nt821) they will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by more difficult calving. A Variant Q204X T This Mutation is carried by a small proportion of animals. Animals that are homozygous (two copies of the Q204X gene) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depth, reduced fat I cover and greater meat tenderness. However, they may also have the potential to exhibit N larger birth weight, and if females, slightly reduced milking ability. Animals that are heterozygous with F94L (i.e.F94L/Q204X), also known as ‘carriers’, will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by larger birth weights and reduced milking ability.
