2017 Regional Legislative Agenda Yields Successes at 91st General Assembly

he 2017 Northwest Arkansas Regional Legislative Agenda was developed last year after numerous meetings and months of planning by the Northwest TArkansas Chambers, the Northwest Arkansas Council, and representatives from Northwest Arkansas’s major employers. This agenda was prepared for the 91st General Assembly that convened in Little Rock January 9, and contained 22 items spread over several key categories: Workforce Development, Workforce Training, Education, Higher Education, Infrastructure, Economic Development, Agriculture, Regional Stewardship, and Business Climate. Twenty bills that represented these categories became acts this session, which is a remarkable accomplishment for the region in one legislative session.

Governor Asa Hutchinson is flanked by Northwest Arkansas education leaders and legislators while signing SB288 into law. The bill sponsored by Senator Jim Hendren and Rep. Dan Douglas, now Act 509, allows for the creation and establishment of Regional Career Centers.
