  • Movie Review: ‘Cars 3’
Movie review: ‘Cars 3’ NEW YORK — Fasten your seatbelts and start your engines for a wild (and often ear- splitting) ride in “Cars 3” (Disney), the latest installment of the family-friendly animated franchise. Six years after the initial sequel and 11 since the series began with “Cars,” the anthropomorphic autos are back with a vengeance. Director Brian Fee ramps up the racing action (and the roar of the engines) while introducing a fleet of new characters sure to please young viewers — not to mention toy manufacturers. Happily, there’s much more than the dizzying blur of NASCAR-like action. Screenwriters Kiel Murray, Bob Peterson and Mike Rich inject a nice amount of heart and pathos into the comedic plot, and add winning messages about second chances and the value of mentoring. The years have been kind to ace racer Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson). He’s still at the top of his game. But just over his shoulder is a new generation of faster vehicles, like the brash rookie Jackson Storm (voice of Armie Hammer). “Enjoy your retirement,” Jackson tells Lightning as he whizzes past. In a flash, Lightning is sidelined by an accident. Disillusioned and depressed, he retreats to his adopted home of Radiator Springs. There he draws on the support of his loyal tow-truck sidekick, Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), and comely Porsche sweetheart, Sally (voice of Bonnie Hunt). Sally knows Lightning must look to the future. “Don’t fear failure,” she insists. “Take a chance. Try something new.” A spiffy fresh paint job by Ramone (voice of Cheech Marin) helps.

“I grew up loving cars and the Southern California car culture. My dad was a parts manager at a Chevrolet dealership, so ‘Cars’ was very personal to me — the characters, the small town, their love and support for each other and their way of life. I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I wanted to take another road trip to new places around the world, and I thought a way into that world could be another passion of mine, the spy movie genre. I just couldn’t shake that idea of marrying the two distinctly different worlds of Radiator Springs and international intrigue. And here we are.” — John Lasseter, Director ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios are off to the races in “Cars 2” as star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend, the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), jump-start a new adventure to exotic new lands stretching across the globe. The duo are joined by a hometown pit crew from Radiator Springs when they head overseas to support Lightning as he competes in the first-ever World Grand Prix, a race created to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the finish line is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and bombshells when Mater is mistakenly ensnared in an intriguing escapade of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and “towing” the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer).

  • Cheech and Chong -- Colorado Springs -- 1972
CHEECH AND CHONG -- COLORADO SPRINGS -- 1972 It’s past cliché that concerts were a different thing in the sixties (a period of American history that took place between 1965 and 1975, more or less) than they are now. And not just the prices and impact. It’s like a church that got defrocked and petered off the rock. We’re left with icons, with a Last Supper painting of those who died before we got tired of them, with second-hand memories and rumors. But who was the major icon of that era? Who put the stamp on the times, survives them to continue as they were and will be? Not Hendrix or the Zep or Credence or even the Floyd. Or any of the litany of those who succumbed at 29 years of age to Rock Star Disease. In fact, it’s not always the musicians who stamp the times in their image. Who remembers bands of the time as much as they remember Hope and Crosby on the Road? You still see FaceBook memes of George Carlin; Lenny Bruce types the beat proto-hip era more than any music of that day. And the Sixties were uniquely summed up by the careers of a couple of kultur klatch comics called Cheech and Chong. They were uniquely of those times, and did a lot to make them as they were. They weren’t guitarists or singers—they were Dopers. And still are. And they’re still Cheech and Chong. Can Led Zeppelin say that? Can Eric Clapton? Does going to a concert by Zep or Floyd or Stones bring it all back? Not really.
