Students are required to take a lesson each time we visit Shawnee Ski Mountain. Equipment can be rented or you may bring your own, but having fun is the main ingredient. The National Meets for six weeks in the cafeteria, trips are weather permitting. We leave History Day Club Central at 2:45 and return at 9:30. This club will focus on celebrating Advisors: Mr. Gillespie & Mrs. history and prepare for the National Gillespie History Day competition. This club will make history come alive for students by engaging them in the discovery of the historical, cultural and social experiences from the past. Students will have the opportunity to participate in engaging competitions with their peers and other students throughout the state in their age category. And Milo as Toto Peter Giordano 3 Justice League Movie Review By Peter Giordano I recently saw Justice League! It was a good movie. It definitely wasn't perfect though. It felt rushed and the CGI (computer generated images for all you non nerds out there) was really bad at the end, with the Flash’s super speed and flying of Superman, played by Henry Cavill. I feel like because of all the rushed scenes, the movie was overloaded. The humor mostly came from the Flash played by Ezra Miller, and surprisingly a little bit of humor from Superman. My favorite “League” member is still Batman played by Ben Afleck. I feel like all the characters worked well when they all came together though. Cyborg played by Ray Fisher, felt like he was only there for plot convenience, and in the “boss battle” it felt like the only people who were actually fighting were Wonder Woman played by Gal Gadot and Aquaman played by Jason Mamoa. Other than my few nitpicks, the movie was really good. I rate it a 7/10. If you have a free 2 hours, then you should check out this movie! -Peter Giordano 4 Ask Eric: Some Super Good Advice by Eric Ferri R Dear Eric, I’m struggling to stay focused during class. What can I do? Signed, Anonymous Dear Anonymous, First of all, that’s a weird name you have. One of the best things you can do to stay focused is to have a good breakfast and drink water every day before school. Eating and drinking boosts the immune system and will keep you more focused. Making a conscious effort to pay attention might also help. Dear Eric, Two of my friends keep calling me hurtful names. I want them to stop, but I don’t want to lose their friendships. Please tell me what to do? Yours truly, Feeling Lost Dear Feeling Lost, The best thing you can do is tell them directly that you don’t like them calling you those names. If they don’t apologize and keep calling you names, they are not really good friends. Perhaps you should find some new ones. 5 Super Terrific Geography Bee By: Savanna Beinert A Geography Bee is where middle schools and high schools all over the United States go through something like a test. The kids are asked Questions, and the teacher marks all the points and see who has the most right, and those who win get a free trip to Trenton, the capital of New Jersey. If he/she wins the Geography Bee in Trenton, they become the Geography Champion of New Jersey. Next, they get a free trip to Washington D.C. The best part of all is that you can bring your family too! The winner is proclaimed the Geography Champion of The United States of America. The prizes are up to 50,000 dollars!! News reporters will come to interview you. Also, you might even get to be on TV. This year’s winner of the CMS Geography Bee was Simon Lugo. Welcome Back Mrs. Glatz! Mrs. Glatz is back after having her baby, Sebastian, in June. The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

Metz Katrina M. Powell April 15, 2019 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Fantasy, Comics Studies, Postmodernism, Post-Fantasy Copyright 2019, Jessie L. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts.

Amid a limited media landscape that otherwise consisted of radio, film, newspaper, and magazines, comics served as a useful tool in engaging readers of all ages to get behind the war effort. The aims of this research was to examine a sampling of messages put forth by comic book publishers before and after American involvement in World War II in the form of fictional comic book stories. In this research, it is found that comic book storytelling/messaging reflected a theme of American isolation prior to U.S. involvement in the war, but changed its tone to become a strong proponent for American involvement post-the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This came in numerous forms, from vilification of America’s enemies in the stories of super heroics, the use of scrap, rubber, paper, or bond drives back on the homefront to provide resources on the frontlines, to a general sense of patriotism.

Dieser Artikel konzentriert sich dabei auf die weniger bekannten Charaktere. Die bekannteren Batman-Antagonisten wie z.B. der Joker oder der Riddler, die als Ikonen der Popkultur Verankerung im kollektiven Gedächtnis gefunden haben, werden in jeweils eigenen Artikeln vorgestellt; in diesem Sammelartikel werden sie nur namentlich gelistet, und durch Links wird auf die jeweiligen Einzelartikel verwiesen. 1 Gegner Batmans im Laufe der Jahrzehnte Die Gesamtheit der (wiederkehrenden) Gegenspieler eines Comic-Helden wird im Fachjargon auch als sogenannte ¹Schurken-Galerieª bezeichnet.
