The Register of the names of those who fell in the 1939-194^ War and are buried in Cemeteries in Belgium

LEOPOLDSBURG WAR CEMETERY

LONDON: COMPILED AND PUBLISHED BY ORDER OF THE IMPERIAL WAR GRAVES COMMISSION

*9S"4 THE LANDS IN BELGIUM OCCUPIED AS COMMON WEALTH WAR CEMETERIES OR GRAVES WERE GENEROUSLY PROVIDED BY THE BELGIAN GOVERN MENT UNDER THE TERMS OF A WAR GRAVES AGREEMENT SIGNED AT BRUSSELS, ON 20th JULY 1951, BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF BELGIUM AND THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND, AUSTRALIA, CANADA, INDIA, NEW ZEALAND, PAKISTAN AND THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA.

The particulars given in the registers of the names have been compiled from information furnished by the Records Offices concerned and by the next-of-kin.

Plot, Row, and Grave are indicated at the end of each entry by a Roman numeral, a capital letter and an Arabic numeral; thus II. B. 23 means Plot II. Row B. Grave 23. A Special Memorial type C, of which one example is mentioned in this Register, bears the inscription "Buried near this spot". THE WAR IN BELGIUM AND HOLLAND

T cannot have occurred to many of those who visited the cemeteries of the First World War as the last sounds of its battles became almost as the vexations of I fierce dreams that the next of these vast ordeals was about to begin, and to demand a similar reckoning in human lives. The restoration of peaceful concerns and appearances in Belgium especially might at one time have seemed to announce that the tragic action was over and done, and that these multitudes of graves of the fallen stood as a symbol of a great calm. How swiftly the sense of a history completed and a vision realized was extinguished by a new recourse to the argument of battle it is unnecessary to amplify now. In Belgium especially the meeting of the two generations in heroic death must long strike the hearts of those who observe their mingling monuments with a particular poignancy. The history of the second great war as it relates to the location and character of the cemeteries in Belgium and in Holland is given in brief in the passages which follow. It is hoped that it may supply sufficient explanation of the subject for those who desire the general view, and at the same time it may recall the strenuous and intense situations in which those who rest in these cemeteries were at last participants, whether in great numbers or entirely or almost alone. Frequent wars and periods of domination by foreign powers characterise the history of Belgium and Holland, culminating in the two great wars of the twentieth century. As a result of the second of these, there He now in Belgium some 11,000, and in Holland nearly 20,000 graves of men and women from all countries of the British Commonwealth and Empire who lost their lives in trying to repel the German invasion in 1940 and in the struggle during the following years for the liberation of the occupied countries. In Belgium, many of these graves are in cemeteries and churchyards which contain also graves of those who fell in the 1914-1918 war, par ticularly along the Franco-Belgian frontier and near the coast. In Holland, there are war cemeteries especially in the eastern part of the country, on the route followed by the Allied armies in their drive towards Germany in 1944-1945 ; but in cemeteries near the mouths of the Rhine and the Scheldt He those who died in the battle for those waterways in October-November 1944, and in a group of cemeteries in the Frisian Islands are the graves of many airmen who failed to return from raids on Germany. 3 Holland, 1940 War broke upon Belgium and Holland on 10th May, 1940. The brief campaign in Holland involved few British troops. The German forces crossed the eastern frontier of the country in several places, and at the same time, early on 10th May, troops were landed on the beaches north of The Hague and parachutists were dropped near Rotterdam and The Hague, seizing vital bridges and isolating the capital. The confusion was increased by the activities of German agents. The Dutch Army was relatively small, and although a valiant resistance was put up in many places, the fact that the German points of attack were widely separated made co-ordinated resistance difficult. On 12th May the German columns advancing from the east made contact with the parachute troops south of Rotterdam. The final blow was the bombing of Rotterdam on 14th May by some fifty German aircraft, which demolished a great part of the city centre and killed a large number of people. Utrecht was threatened with a similar fate, but in the evening of 14th May the Dutch forces surrendered. When the Dutch Government found their country attacked, they appealed to Great Britain for help. In spite of their anxieties elsewhere and the shortage of trained troops, the War Office arranged to send a force of Marines and a composite Guards battalion containing men from the 2nd Battalion Irish Guards and the 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards. The Marines, numbering two hundred, landed at the Hook of Holland early in the morning of 12th May, with orders to hold the port so that further landings could take place unopposed. During the morning they established a peri meter about a mile and a half from the jetty. Early the following morning the composite Guards battalion arrived, with orders to move towards The Hague and to co-operate with the local Dutch commander in safeguarding the Dutch Government. Within a few hours of landing it became clear that unless strong reinforcements were forthcoming the British troops would have to be withdrawn from the Hook. In the meantime, the road from The Hague having been kept open, Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina arrived about midday and embarked for England in a British destroyer. The same evening the Dutch Government also left. The general situation in Holland was deteriorating rapidly, and heavy air raids in the area defended by the battalion caused a number of casualties in the evening of the 13th and the morning of the 14th. About noon of that day, the battalion was re-embarked in British destroyers, along with the Marines, and taken back to Dover.

Belgium, 1940

The attack on Belgium started simultaneously with that on Holland. Plans against this eventuality had been made by the British and the French commands the previous 4 autumn, providing for an Allied line extending from Antwerp southward through Louvain, Wavre and Namur, covering Brussels. The British section of this line was to reach from Louvain to Wavre. When, early on 10th May, the Germans started their assault by bombing airfields, communications and towns in Belgium, and by crossing into Belgium through the Maastricht appendix as well as farther south, the British Expeditionary Force was immediately ordered to move from France up to its new line. By the time the British troops were in position on the line of the Dyle River on 12th May, the situation was already beginning to worsen. Im portant bridges over the Maas and the Albert Canal were lost at the very beginning, and the Belgians were forced to withdraw to positions on the left of the British Expeditionary Force, from the Scheldt Estuary to near Louvain. Withdrawal from the Dyle line, however, was dictated by the German success farther south in breaking through the weakest part of the French front, between Sedan and Namur. On 16th May the British Expeditionary Force were ordered to fall back to the line of the Escaut (Scheldt). This withdrawal was successfully completed by the night of 18th May. Two days later, the German forces driving across Northern France reached Abbeville on the Somme, and the British force in Belgium was cut off from its supply lines and from the other British troops in France south of the German wedge. The Allied Armies in Belgium now had to look both ways, defending the Escaut line to the north-east, and being in danger from the German Panzer divisions to the south. The British Expeditionary Force had so far suffered less from the fighting in Belgium than had the Belgian and French armies there ; it was accordingly called upon to shoulder much of the burden of the new southern front. On 22nd May a meeting of the Supreme War Council at Vincennes agreed that the Belgian Army should withdraw to the line of the Yser (sacrificing all but a very small corner of their own country), and that the British Expeditionary Force and the French First Army should attempt to force a way southwards through the German corridor to link up with the French and British forces on the other side of it. By then, however, the British were withdrawing from the Escaut to the French frontier, and could not disengage their troops to make any strong thrust southwards ; an attempt that had been made on 21st May ended in a withdrawal two days later. By 25th May the Germans had broken through the Belgian Army front, and there was a gap on the left of the British Expeditionary Force, between them and the Belgians, near Menin. On the morning of 26th May it was decided that there was nothing for it but to withdraw behind the Lys, and to prepare for the defence of a perimeter pro tecting the ports of Dunkirk and Nieuport. Orders were received from England that afternoon for the British Expeditionary Force to fall back upon the coast. By then the Belgian Army was showing signs of collapse and in its withdrawal was being forced northwards instead of conforming to the Allied withdrawal behind the Yser. On 27th May King Leopold asked for an armistice. This left the British to fill in a gap of some twenty miles on their left flank between Ypres and the sea.

5 On 28th May the area occupied by the Franco-British forces was some thirty-five miles deep but less than twenty miles wide : its southern end was on the Lys, its eastern flank on the canals between Comines and the sea at Nieuport, and its western flank on the line Dunkirk-Cassel-Hazebrouek. After a series of desperate rearguard actions, by 30th May the whole of the British Expeditionary Force was within the perimeter Dunkirk—Bergues—Veurne—Nieuport (partly French and partly Belgian territory), and along with it was a part of the French forces. During the evening of 26th May the organised evacuation from Dunkirk and the neighbouring beaches began, controlled by the Flag Officer Commanding, Dover, and carried out by destroyers and other naval vessels, and by hundreds of small craft of all kinds. In spite of attacks from the air and by German artillery, this evacuation never faltered, and by midnight on Sunday, 2nd June, when the beaches were cleared of British troops, 211,267 fit men and 13,053 casualties of the British Expeditionary Force had been embarked, as well as 141,841 Allied troops, most of them French. Since, as indicated above, the British Expeditionary Force did not become heavily involved in the fighting until the later stages of the campaign in Belgium, the ceme teries in that country containing graves dating from 1940 He along the Franco-Belgian frontier and near the coast. There is a group in the vicinity of Tournai, where the Escaut Hne was defended ; the next group is in the neighbourhood of Comines- Ypres, where the British held up the German advance on the Lys and on the Comines- Ypres canal; and finaUy, there are the cemeteries of the Dunkirk perimeter, as at Adinkerke, Veurne, Coxyde and La Panne—the last-named town being the final site of the General Headquarters of the British Expeditionary Force. A few casualties of 1940 He buried in cemeteries outside these groups, as in Brussels and in Ghent. Between June 1940 and September 1944, there were buried in cemeteries throughout Holland and Belgium numbers of airmen who crashed or were shot down while raiding German objectives in these countries or while returning from Germany. Many of these men He in cemeteries on the Frisian islands of TerschelUng, Ameland and ScWermonnikoog.

The Return to Belgium and Holland, 19 44

At the beginning of September 1944 Alfied troops once more set foot in Belgium. From the time of their breaking out from Normandy in mid-August, their advance through northern France had been extraordinarily rapid, German losses in Normandy and at the Seine crossings having been so severe as to render it impossible for the Germans to make any firm stand beyond the Seine. Between 19th August and 1st September the AlHes crossed the Seine on all sectors of the front. They entered 6 Brussels in the evening of 3rd September, and Antwerp on the following day. In spite of strong German resistance early in September on the line of the Albert Canal and on that of the Meuse-Escaut Canal, the Second Army entered Holland on 11th September just south of Eindhoven. The price paid by the Allies for their advance across these two canals is shown by the war cemeteries at Geel and Kasterlee. At the same time, while the 30th Corps drove northwards just east of Leopoldsburg, where another war cemetery bears witness to the severity of the fighting, light forces from that Corps spread eastwards almost to the River Meuse.

The very speed of the Allied advance rendered supply problems urgent, and, although the port of Antwerp had been taken, the approaches to it from the North Sea were still in German hands. Dieppe, which fell on 1st September, was quickly restored to usefulness as a supply port, but damage done to the French and Belgian railway systems by the Allied air offensive retarded supplies and made a pause in the advance at this stage inevitable. Field-Marshal Montgomery's aim, however, was still to cross the Rhine before the Germans had time to reorganise, and he ordered the Second Army to drive forward by Grave, Nijmegen and Arnhem, and to secure crossings over the water obstacles that lay before them—the Wilhelmina and Zuid Willemsvaart Canals, the Maas at Grave, the Waal at Nijmegen and the Lower Rhine at Arnhem. The plan was that the United States 101st Airborne Division should capture the canal bridges and the other vital points south of Grave, the United States 82nd Airborne Division should seize the bridges at Grave and at Nijmegen, and the British 1st Airborne Division, with the Polish Parachute Brigade under command, should take the bridge at Arnhem. The British 30th Corps was to advance from the Meuse-Escaut Canal bridgehead along the corridor thus prepared by the airborne landings, while the 8th Corps and the 12th Corps on the flanks were to widen the corridor to east and west respectively. The time for re-grouping, detailed planning, and bringing up adequate supplies were cut to a minimum, and 17th September was decided upon as the date for launching the airborne attack. Should this assault prove successful, and should the spearhead of the ground forces succeed in reaching the Zuyder Zee, as was hoped, some three to four hundred thousand German troops in West Holland would be cut off, and the line of the Rhine and the German West Wall would be turned.

Arnhem

On 17th September, two trains of troop transport aircraft and towed gliders carried the airborne troops to their destinations, supported by more than 1,000 British and 7 American fighters and fighter-bombers. Losses on that first day were comparatively light, and few German fighters interfered, since on the previous day German air fields and anti-aircraft positions had been heavily bombed. The two United States airborne divisions met with a fair measure of success in their operations. The 101st cleared the Eindhoven-Grave corridor, but the Guards Armoured Division, the spearhead of the 30th Corps, met with resistance in advancing to Eindhoven which somewhat delayed its junction with the airborne troops. On 19th September the Guards pushed rapidly on to Grave, which had been taken by the 82nd United States Airborne Division. This Division by then also held the road from Grave to Nijmegen, but Nijmegen itself was still in German hands, as was the great road bridge over the Waal there. Not until 20th September was this bridge taken, fortunately intact. Thereafter for a few days there was heavy fighting between Nijmegen and Arnhem. Farther south, too, near Veghel and Uden (the latter the site of another war cemetery) the Germans made repeated attempts to cut the axis of advance of the land forces and stop it from being used. The British 1st Airborne Division meanwhile had been doing its utmost against heavy odds at Arnhem. The battle there was not a co-ordinated action, but rather a series of combats by separated groups. The Airborne operation coincided with the presence near Arnhem of German armoured forces on their way back to Germany to refit, so that German armour was speedily brought in, whereas bad weather fatally delayed the arrival of reinforcements for the airborne troops—the Polish gliders landed on 19th September, but the Polish parachutists not until 21st-23rd September. The troops that were landed found it impossible to occupy the positions intended in the plan, and as a result a very large proportion of the supplies dropped for them from the air fell into the hands of the Germans. Heavy losses were suffered by the supplying aircraft in what thus proved a vain endeavour. The British Division at Arnhem was forced to form a perimeter in Oosterbeek, which it defended gallantly against overwhelming odds, till on 25th September it was decided that as much of it as possible must be withdrawn across the Lower Rhine. During the night 25/26th September, about 2,400 men were ferried across. Some 7,000 men were lost by the First Airborne Division in killed, wounded and missing. A number of the missing succeeded in rejoining the British forces during the succeeding weeks with the aid of the Dutch underground movement, notably an organised escape party some 140 strong that crossed the Lower Rhine in the night of 22nd/23rd October. Those who were killed during operation at Arnhem lie for the most part in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery and in the Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegen. At Nijmegen, too, is the large Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, containing the graves of Canadians who died in the eastern provinces of Holland and of men of the Canadian Army who lost their lives in the heavy fighting early in 1945 just across the German frontier. 8 The Scheldt Estuary

It was next necessary to open the approach to Antwerp from the sea, so that the Allies could have the use of this most important port. To do this, it was necessary to clear the corner of Belgian and Dutch territory between the Leopold Canal and the Scheldt estuary at Breskens ; then to capture the peninsula of South Beveland, and the island of Walcheren, on the northern side of the estuary. The task of clearing the extreme north-western corner of Belgium fell to the Canadians. On 6th October the 3rd Canadian Division launched an attack across the Leopold Canal. A foothold on the northern bank was quickly gained, but that was all. It proved impossible to expand the small bridgehead formed, until further attacks were made on the rear and on the flank of the German positions. On 9th October one brigade of the 3rd Canadian Division was landed in the rear of the Germans on the south shore of the Scheldt estuary east of Breskens, and on 14th October troops of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division made their way through the German defences at the eastern end of the Leopold Canal. The landing east of Breskens relieved the strain upon the original bridgehead across the canal, which began to expand. After almost a fortnight, the German pocket in north-western Belgium had been reduced to about half its original size. Breskens was captured on 22nd October, and on 3rd November all resistance ended, in the vicinity of Knocke-sur-mer. This com pleted the clearance of the southern shore of the Scheldt. Belgium was now delivered from the German yoke, the first occupied country of western Europe to be entirely freed.

Meanwhile the 2nd Canadian Division had been fighting hard on the north bank of the Scheldt. Proceeding northwards from Antwerp, by 22nd September the Canadians secured a bridgehead across the Albert Canal on the outskirts of the city. Within two weeks they were close to the isthmus leading to South Beveland, but German resistance then increased considerably, and it was not until 23rd October that the Canadian troops, after severe fighting, were in a position to begin their advance along the isthmus. On the night of 27th/28th October they succeeded in crossing the canal that cuts through the isthmus, aided by a diversion created in the rear of the Germans by the landing of troops from the British 52nd Division that had been ferried across the Scheldt from Terneuzen to the South Beveland Peninsula. That peninsula was cleared by the end of the month. The Royal Air Force had already paved the way for the assault on the island of Walcheren, which is not unlike a saucer in shape, the central part of it being below sea-level. Bomber Command on 3rd October breached the dyke which forms the rim of the saucer, near Westkapelle on its western side ; breaches at other points also were made, and before the end of October the whole central region of the island 9 was covered by flood water, which inundated some of the German defences and seriously hampered the enemy's movements. The attack on the island by the land forces was threefold ; across the causeway from the east, across the Scheldt from the south, and from the sea on the west. On 1st November Commando troops crossed the Scheldt from Breskens and landed on the island near Flushing, followed by troops of the 52nd (Lowland) Division. The landing was successful, and was made without heavy casualties. By the evening of that day, most of the dock and central areas of Flushing had been captured. When night fell on 3rd November, the Germans in the command post in the Hotel Britannia, for which very severe fighting took place, had surrendered, and Flushing was in British hands. On 1st November, too, Commandos sailed from Ostend to land in the neighbourhood of Westkapelle, at the westernmost point of Walcheren island. The support craft for this expedition suffered heavy losses, but H.M.S. War spite and the monitors Erebus and Roberts helped the assault troops by engaging such German shore batteries as had not suffered from the inundations ; rocket-firing Typhoon aircraft also gave their support. Westkapelle and the principal German strong-points in the neigh bourhood were quickly reduced, and progress was made the first day in the direction of Flushing. The Flushing and Westkapelle forces were linked together by 3rd November. Meanwhile, first the Canadians and then troops of the 52nd Division had attempted to gain a bridgehead on Walcheren by forcing the causeway from South Beveland. This causeway was very heavily defended, and although the Canadians began their attack along it on 31st October, no satisfactory foothold on the island had been gained by the time the Lowland Division took over on 2nd November. An assault was therefore made across the channel and the mud-flats some distance south of the causeway early on 3rd November, which took the Germans by surprise ; it was successfully followed up, and by the evening of 4th November troops which had crossed the creek had linked up with those that had crossed the causeway to form a bridgehead two miles wide and a mile deep.

It was now only a matter of time before Walcheren was completely freed : the problem was chiefly one of rounding up the many German groups isolated here and there on the island. Middelburg, the capital, surrendered on 5th November, and on 8th November it was reported that all resistance had ceased. The number of prisoners taken was about 8,000.

The Navy still had to face the difficult task of clearing the mines from the Scheldt estuary : the seventy-mile channel to Antwerp had to be swept sixteen times. The first convoy entered the port of Antwerp on 28th November, and its arrival meant 10 the alleviation of the hitherto very difficult supply problems of the Allied armies preparing to enter Germany. To the north of the Scheldt estuary there are two war cemeteries at Bergen-op- Zoom, and over two hundred men are buried in the Northern Cemetery at Flushing; to the south of the estuary lies the Canadian War Cemetery at Adegem.

The Ardennes Offensive

While the opening of the Scheldt was proceeding, other forces were engaged in clearing the whole region west and south of the Maas, and in holding the bridgehead at Nijmegen that had been gained as a result of the airborne operations in September. While these tasks involved many small fights in southern Holland, and inflicted steady losses on the Germans, they led to no large-scale activities. By 3rd December the last German troops on the left bank of the Maas were disposed of, except for those at Kapelscheveer, which the Canadians did not take till 31st January. The next major battle was initiated by the German High Command. Hitler had determined that an effort should be made to drive across Belgium, seize Antwerp, and cut the Allied armies in two, as had been done in May 1940. His orders led to the great Ardennes counter-offensive of December 1944. It was prepared with great secrecy, and was launched against a relatively weakly held sector of the front. Some twenty-four German divisions were employed, all available reserves being thrown into this last desperate effort. The immediate aim was to seize the Allied com munications centre of Liege, and driving westwards, to divide the British and part of the American forces to the north from the French and the greater part of the American forces to the south. The attack started on 16th December, and was supported on 1st January by the last major effort made by the Luftwaffe, which attacked Allied planes in the air and on the ground on a scale not seen since the landings in Normandy. At its maximum extent, the salient formed by the Germans was about sixty miles deep and forty wide. But the attack was halted by 26th December, having failed to reach even Liege and the initial objectives on the Meuse. By 16th January the Allied forces had reduced the salient to a bulge and were ready to counter-attack into German territory. The brunt of the fighting had fallen upon the First and Third United States Armies to north and south of the salient respectively ; but in December and January troops of the British 30th Corps were fighting on the right of the United States First Army, which with the United States Ninth Army was put temporarily under the command of Field-Marshal Montgomery.

One final clearance had still to be made in South Holland : there was a small German salient south of Roermond, at the northern end of the Maastricht appendix, between li the rivers Roer and Maas. The 52nd, 43rd and 102nd U.S. Divisions and the 7th Armoured Division were charged with operations here in January 1945, and carried them through to a successful conclusion by the 26th of that month. There are no large war cemeteries in the region of the Ardennes battles of December. In the Maastricht appendix are the war cemeteries at Brunssum and Sittard, which contain graves resulting from the clearance of the German salient there in January, and from fighting near Geilenkirchen, just across the German border, in November 1944.

The Final Phase in Holland

The Ardennes battles had postponed preparations for the drive into Germany and northwards through Holland, but January saw their resumption, and on 8th February the First Canadian Army (which at this time included seven divisions from the United Kingdom) began its drive eastwards from the neighbourhood of Nijmegen towards the Reichswald Forest, near Cleves. On the first day the frontier of Germany was crossed along the entire front. German resistance was at first confused; elaborate arrangements to mislead the Germans as to the probable region of the Allied attack had been effective, and in the final stages of preparation, extensive air operations against the railway bridges and ferries serving the battle area, and artillery bombard ment, hampered the bringing up of supplies and reinforcements and saturated the German defences. The success of these operations was such that weather and mud hampered the Allies in their initial assault more than did the Germans. The sub sequent campaign within Germany itself is described in another volume of these Registers. The remainder of the campaign in Holland was initiated by the First Canadian Army, which was ordered to open up the supply route to the north through Arnhem and to clear north-eastern and western Holland. At the beginning of April, the Canadians began this task. Troops from the 2nd Canadian Corps advanced rapidly to the east of the Zuyder Zee, taking Deventer on 10th April, Zwolle on 14th April, and reaching the North Sea at Zoutkamp, north of Groningen, on the 15th. In the town of Groningen German forces offered considerable resistance, but on the 16th that resistance was almost completely overcome. On 18th April the 3rd Canadian Division reached the shore of the North Sea north of Leeuwarden ; this completed the liberation of all north-eastern Holland, except for a pocket at Delfzijl, on the Ems estuary opposite Emden, where the Germans held out until 2nd May. Meanwhile, other troops from the First Canadian Army had been operating to the south of the Zuyder Zee. A bridgehead across the Neder Rijn was gained to the 12 north-east of Nijmegen, and from there an attack by the 49th (West Riding) Division across the Ijssel liberated Arnhem at last on 14th April. The 1st Canadian Division had meanwhile crossed the Ijssel farther north, and were threatening Apeldoorn, which was taken on 17th April. The fall of Apeldoorn had been precipitated by a ^northwards dash from Arnhem by the 5th Canadian Armoured Division, which, cutting across the line of advance of the 1st Canadian Division, severed communica tions between Apeldoorn and west Holland, and reached the Zuyder Zee at Harderwijk on 18th April. About 120,000 German troops were now cut off in Western Holland. Their front

LEOPOLDSBURG WAR CEMETERY

Leopoldsburg (Fr. Bourg-Leopold) is a garrison town of some 5,000 inhabitants in the Province of Limburg, with rail services from Brussels and Antwerp ; it is about fifty miles north-east of Brussels. The War Cemetery is situated on the southern outskirts of the town, approximately three-quarters of a mile from the railway station, and is about 200 yards to the east of the Belgian Military Cemetery, on the right of the road to the military camp on the site known as the " King's Camp ". There is a hotel not far from the cemetery. There are about 35 original burials in the cemetery which were those of casualties resulting from isolated engagements in or near the town. Of the remainder, some are burials from a military hospital which was established at Leopoldsburg during the latter part of 1944, and some were brought in from the surrounding district. The total number of burials in Leopoldsburg War Cemetery is 801, made up as follows :
