The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The -

For over three decades he has been considered one of America's leading critics of literature and i.s doubtless, as Stanley Edgar Hyman observes, "the most widely known 1 of our critics. " In an age when literary criticism has become greatly specialized and has tended to find its audience for the most part in academie circles, Edmund Wilson stands out as the only critic whose reputation is based upon critical acceptance by both the intellectuals and the broad literate reading public. Through the years his writings have been published in the avant-garde literary "little magazines" as well as the mass-circulated popular publications, 2 and unlike other prominent critics of literature, the majority of whom are teachers by profession, Wilson sees his writings as "the record of a journalist"3 and speaks of himself as belonging to the "serious profession of journalism. -

Name: Class: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi By Rudyard Kipling 1893 Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling’s most popular work is his collection of short stories titled The Jungle Book. “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” is a short story from The Jungle Book about the adventures of a young mongoose. As you read, take notes on how the characters react to danger during the story. At the hole where he went in Red-Eye called to Wrinkle-Skin. Hear what little Red-Eye saith:1 “Nag, come up and dance with death!” Eye to eye and head to head, (Keep the measure, Nag.) This shall end when one is dead; (At thy pleasure, Nag.) Turn for turn and twist for twist — (Run and hide thee, Nag.) Hah! The hooded Death has missed! (Woe2 betide3 thee, Nag!) [1] This is the story of the great war that Rikki-tikki- tavi fought single-handed, through the bath- rooms of the big bungalow in Segowlee "Yellow Mongoose" by Colin Frankland is licensed under CC BY-NC 4 cantonment. Darzee, the tailor-bird, helped him, 2.0. and Chuchundra, the musk-rat, who never comes out into the middle of the floor, but always creeps round by the wall, gave him advice; but Rikki-tikki did the real fighting. He was a mongoose, rather like a little cat in his fur and his tail, but quite like a weasel in his head and his habits. His eyes and the end of his restless nose were pink; he could scratch himself anywhere he pleased, with any leg, front or back, that he chose to use; he could fluff up his tail till it looked like a bottle-brush, and his war-cry, as he scuttled through the long grass, was: “Rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk!” One day, a high summer flood washed him out of the burrow where he lived with his father and mother, and carried him, kicking and clucking, down a roadside ditch. -
Comparing "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling to Disney's Film Adaptations
Abigail McMahon “I Wan’Na Be Like You”: Comparing The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling to Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967) and The Jungle Book (2016) Faculty Sponsor: Katherine Kittredge, Department of English Many people think that children’s literature is just for a child’s entertainment. They don’t stop to think about the moral lessons that the stories are teaching the children. Little Red Riding Hood teaches kids not to talk to strangers, The Ugly Duckling teaches kids that outer beauty wasn’t the most important thing, and Stone Soup teaches kids the importance of sharing, etc.… The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling is another example to the many lessons that children’s literature teaches kids. What is interesting about this set of stories is how they have been told through the years. The Jungle Books have had many adaptions and retelling of Mowgli’s tale. The most known adaption of Kipling’s stories was Disney’s animated film The Jungle Book (1967) and Disney’s newest live action version of the film, The Jungle Book (2016). The strange thing to consider is that the book and both films, while from the same source material, differ in what they offer to the audience. The original stories tell vignettes of Mowgli’s life as he grows up and what he learns from the other animals. They teach him how to be a friend to all and how to decide when a fight is worth it or not among other things. Though, a lot of the stories in Kipling’s book don’t even focus on Mowgli. -

Naipaul: From Gadfly to Obsessive Mohamed Bakari* All the examples Naipaul gives, all the people he speaks to tend to align themselves under the Islam versus the West opposition he is determined to find everywhere. It is all tiresome and repetitious. Edward W.Said The Man and the Prize : The announcement of the 2001 Nobel Laureate for Literature in October that year elicited the kind of reaction that was predictable, given the reputation and the choice, that of Sir Vidhiadar Surajparasad Naipaul. Of Indian ancestry, V.S. Naipaul is a grandchild of Hindu Brahmins who found their way to the Caribbean island of Trinidad as indentured labourers to escape the grinding poverty of Utterpradesh. Naipaul’s was just one of a stream of families that were encouraged to migrate to the West Indies from the former British colonies of India and Chinese enclaves in Mainland China. Slavery had been abolished in the British Empire in 1832 and the former African slaves were no longer available to the sugarcane plantations and labour had to be sought from somewhere. In their natural ingenuity the British devised the new institution of indentured labour, which was really a new euphemism for a new form of servitude. Whereas the slaves were forcibly repatriated against their will, the new indentured labourers had the carrot of landownership dangled in front of them, to lure them to places they had no idea of. The new immigrants added a new dimension to an already complex racial situation, by adding the Asian layer to the Carib, European and African admixtures created by Alternatives: Turkish Journal of International Relations, Vol.2, No.3&4, Fall&Winter 2003 243 waves of migration. -

“Patterns of Access to Land by Chinese Agricultural Investors and Their Impacts on Rural Households in Mandalay Region, Myanmar”
Institute of Agricultural Policy and Markets (420) Department of Agricultural and Food Policy (420a) First Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Harald Grethe Second Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Regina Birner “Patterns of access to land by Chinese agricultural investors and their impacts on rural households in Mandalay Region, Myanmar” Master Thesis Submitted by: Miriam Esmaragda Romero Antonio Stuttgart-Hohenheim March, 2015 This work was financially supported by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Foundation Fiat Panis Abstract After more than fifty years of socialist regime, Myanmar opened up their land market with the modifications to their Land Laws and Foreign Investment Law in 2011. Since then, large land concessions have increased dramatically. These land concessions are undertaken with no consultation or compensation and are characterized by natural resource exploitation. In the uplands of Central Myanmar rural farmers who still rely on cattle to plough their lands and on rainfall to irrigate their fields, are pressured to decide between receiving a fixed income by renting their farmland to Chinese investors or, preventing their land from being used for unsustainable cultivation practices driven by these investors. This study presents an analysis of the impacts that short-term land leases to Chinese agricultural investors has on farmers’ livelihoods in Chuang Kwa tract of Mandalay Region in Myanmar. This research sought to understand: a) Chinese investor’s strategies to access farmers’ land, b) estimate effects on farmers’ income and food security c) implications on land-user rights and d) implications on land and water use. This study follows the Institutional Analysis and Development (AID) Framework, applying a convergent methodology.
