Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012.

  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

  • Locations of Motherhood in Shakespeare on Film
Volume 2 (2), 2009 ISSN 1756-8226 Locations of Motherhood in Shakespeare on Film LAURA GALLAGHER Queens University Belfast Adelman’s Suffocating Mothers (1992) appropriates feminist psychoanalysis to illustrate how the suppression of the female is represented in selected Shakespearean play-texts (chronologically from Hamlet to The Tempest ) in the attempted expulsion of the mother in order to recover the masculine sense of identity. She argues that Hamlet operates as a watershed in Shakespeare’s canon, marking the prominent return of the problematic maternal presence: “selfhood grounded in paternal absence and in the fantasy of overwhelming contamination at the site of origin – becomes the tragic burden of Hamlet and the men who come after him” (1992, p.10). The maternal body is thus constructed as the site of contamination, of simultaneous attraction and disgust, of fantasies that she cannot hold: she is the slippage between boundaries – the abject. Julia Kristeva’s theory of the abject (1982) ostensibly provides a hypothesis for analysis of women in the horror film, yet the theory also provides a critical means of situating the maternal figure, the “monstrous- feminine” in film versions of Shakespeare (Creed, 1993, 1996). Therefore the choice to focus on the selected Hamlet , Macbeth , Titus Andronicus and Richard III film versions reflects the centrality of the mother figure in these play-texts, and the chosen adaptations most powerfully illuminate this article’s thesis. Crucially, in contrast to Adelman’s identification of the attempted suppression of the “suffocating mother” figures 1, in adapting the text to film the absent maternal figure is forced into (an extended) presence on screen.

İlk film İngiliz aktör- yönetmen Sir Laurence Oliver'in 1955 film uyarlaması III. Richard, ikincisi İngiliz yönetmen Richard Loncraine'in İngiliz aktör-yönetmen Ian McKellen ile birlikte çektiği 1995 yapımı III. ABSTRACT Within the rise of Hollywood productions at the beginning of the 1930s, American Film Industry put the works of famous British playwright William Shakespeare at its one of the most indispensable sources.

  • 1 Interviewer: Peter, Um, Great Expectations- but Did It Meet
Interviewer: Peter, um, Great Expectations- but did it meet yours? Peter: It sort of did and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It was a very decent, robust, competent, workmanlike adaptation and nothing damns it with faint praise more than that (interviewer:not really that good). I thought it was a really likeable attractive piece of work, I really liked Jeremy Evans. When you think how awful he was in War Horse, but that wasn’t really his fault, I thought War Horse was so treacly and this was pretty decent- he is a pretty good lead to play this. I wondered why we were hearing it all again, I mean it’s great, I love it, I can’t get enough of Pip being beastly to Joe Gargery and being snobbish to him and the awful toe-curling embarrassment of all that, just deathless, I can’t get enough of them but why are we seeing it all again, especially as the film seems to be making a bit of a virtue of not having anything radically new to say about it- I don’t think, unless I miss.. Catherine thinks it does. I thought it was good and I’ll sit and watch it perfectly happily, there were some very nice cameo turns in it- Sally Hawkins, who’s just born to be a Dickens player, David Walliams as Mr Pomchook . So I thought it was good but I wondered why we were hearing about it again, what was the point when people like the BBC, with their version of Bleak House , which was so radical and strong, why do this, why do this now? Why do it if you’ve really nothing new to say? Presenter: Catherine, can you answer that question, Mike Newell’s talked about this being his sexy version of Great Expectations- did you feel any of that? Catherine: I didn’t feel sexy, I didn’t feel it was sexy and I didn’t feel sexy watching it, I felt the opposite of sexy.
