4 Expand Your Global Outlook GABRIELLE KANTER ’17 Political Science major and Pre-Law Before I came to Redlands, I had no prior international travel experience and was terrified of the idea. My advisor convinced me to take a May Term in Salzburg, Austria, to study the politics of Eastern Europe. While there, I learned to embrace the excitement of being out of my comfort zone and was inspired to pursue a full semester of study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom the following year. For me, there is something crucial about experiencing things firsthand—and not just the historic buildings, different food or lifestyles of each culture. In my case, a visit to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands helped me to see the important role of multinational, independent courts in upholding global human rights in an entirely new way. It sparked new academic interests for me, and after graduation my first priority is law school. GABRIELLE KANTER Immersing myself in new situations and interacting with LAS VEGAS, NV people from around the world have helped me become clever, open-minded and resourceful. Mostly, I’ve learned to be fearless when opportunities come my way. Regardless of what I do professionally, I’ll be more successful because of the person STUDY 100+ I’ve become through study abroad. Stretch Your Intellect to Tackle Challenging Questions JACOB KHURI ’17 Biochemistry major, Religious Studies minor I’ve been fortunate to conduct research across the global health spectrum. As a research assistant in the field of urology at Medical Center, I helped construct a model for the ideal ureteral guide wire. While working with the epidemiology department at the University of Buffalo in New York, I investigated the impact of food insecurity levels among Iraqi, Somali and Burmese refugees resettled in the U.S. More recently, in a collaboration with Redlands chemistry professor Dr. Acquaye, I’ve been synthesizing new ruthenium complexes—as potential anti-cancer agents— that will be characterized and used in reactivity studies. This particular research has opened up the field of medicinal chemistry to me, and I plan to pursue this along with medical school. Each of these opportunities has benefited me, and my work ethic has grown tremen- dously. I’ve accumulated experiences normally reserved for graduate students—working with a variety of mentors, co-authoring papers, presenting my findings to other scientists. More importantly, my research JACOB KHURI experience has better defined my career AMMAN, JORDAN goals and the difference I want to make. 5 YOURS TO
