Lipman Pamphlet to accompany Geologic Investigations Series I–2799 dacite Ceobolla Creek Tuff Nelson Mountain Tuff, rhyolite Rat Creek Tuff, dacite Cebolla Creek Tuff Rat Creek Tuff, rhyolite Wheeler Geologic Monument (Half Moon Pass quadrangle) provides exceptional exposures of three outflow tuff sheets erupted from the San Luis caldera complex. Lowest sheet is Rat Creek Tuff, which is nonwelded throughout but grades upward from light-tan rhyolite (~74% SiO2) into pale brown dacite (~66% SiO2) that contains sparse dark-brown andesitic scoria. Distinctive hornblende-rich middle Cebolla Creek Tuff contains basal surge beds, overlain by vitrophyre of uniform mafic dacite that becomes less welded upward. Uppermost Nelson Mountain Tuff consists of nonwelded to weakly welded, crystal-poor rhyolite, which grades upward to a densely welded caprock of crystal-rich dacite (~68% SiO2). Wood, n, U.S. Bureau of Mines STUDIES RELATED TO WILDERNESS Under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and the Joint Conference Report on Senate Bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been conducting mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as "wilderness," "wild," or "canoe" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Study Area, Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Lake, Park, and Chaffee Counties, Colo. The area was established as a wilderness study area by Public Law 96-560, December 22, 1980. MINERAL RESOURCE POTENTIAL SUMMARY STATEMENT During 1981 and 1982, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Buffalo Peaks Wilde-ness Study Area. -

BULL MOOSE SPORTSMENS ALLIANCE/COLORADO BACKCOUNTRY HUNTERS AND ANGLERS/COLORADO TROUT UNLIMITED/COLORADO WILDLIFE FEDERATION/NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION/THEODORE ROOSEVELT CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP/TROUT UNLIMITED/WESTERN NATIVE TROUT INITIATIVE Sportsmen's Recommendations for Supporting the Proposed Colorado Roadless Rule Problem 1: At 562,000 acres, the upper tier category in the preferred alternative is too small and fails to include much of the most important fish and wildlife habitat. Solution: After further upper tier areas are included by the agency for the Pike-San Isabel and Rio Grande national forests, the acreage of upper tier lands in the preferred alternative should increase to a total of at least 1.4 million acres (33% of Colorado's road less acres) using the prioritized list of road less areas below. Upper tier lands bordering Community Protection Zones may be cut back in acreage so the bordering areas are not included in the upper tier (the overlap is roughly 22,000 acres total). All Alternative 2 lands already placed in upper tier should remain there. Rationale: The upper tier category has been created to balance narrowly defined exceptions in the CO rule such as coal mining, ski area development, and community protection zone logging. This is very similar to the "Primitive" and "Wild Land Recreation" categories used to balance development allowances in the Idaho roadless rule. While important, the preferred alternative (alt. 2) acres are limited to areas where forest plans already prohibit road building. Using these acres as upper tier does not address key fish and wildlife habitat nor does it illustrate a commitment by the Forest Service to go beyond their current plans and create a truly protective rule. -

Mount Adams (elevation: 12,276 ft; 3,742 m) is centered 50 km west and 2.8 km higher than foreground meadow (elevation: 2,950 ft.; 900 m); its eruptions began ~520 ka, its upper cone was built in late Pleistocene, and several eruptions have taken place in the Holocene. Mt. Olympus, mythological home of the Greek gods, Yosemite’s Half Dome, the ever-classic Matterhorn, Alaska’s Denali, and Colorado’s Pikes Peak all share the quality of compelling attraction that a charismatic alpine profile evokes. At the base of our peak along the confluence of two small, nondescript streams, Native Americans gathered thousands of years ago. Explorers, immigrants, city-visionaries and fortune-seekers arrived successively, all shaping in turn the region and communities that today spread from the flanks of Pikes Peak. From any vantage point along the Interstate 25 corridor, the Colorado plains, or the Arkansas River Valley escarpments, Pikes Peak looms as the dominant feature of a diverse “bioregion”, a geographical area with a distinct flora and fauna, that stretches from alpine tundra to desert grasslands. “Biodiversity” is shorthand for biological diversity: a term covering a broad array of contexts from the genetics of individual organisms to ecosystem interactions. The news tells us daily of ongoing threats from the loss of biodiversity on global and regional levels as humans extend their influence across the face of the earth and into its sustaining processes. On a regional level, biologists look for measures of biodiversity, celebrate when they find sites where those measures are high and mourn when they diminish; conservation organizations and in some cases, legal statutes, try to protect biodiversity, and communities often struggle to balance human needs for social infrastructure with desirable elements of the natural landscape. -
