Training Rural Students for ‘Joy of Making’!

Introduction about Organisation : Vigyan Ashram (VA) is a center of Indian Institute of Education (IIE) in 1983. It was founded by Dr.S.S.Kalbag in a village Pabal near Pune. Vigyan Ashram (VA) (www.vigyanashram.com) is training rural youth on various appropriate rural technologies and helping them to start their enterprises. There are more than 2000+ enterprises started by VA alumni. Profile of some of our alumni entrepreneurs are available on www.ruralstartup.wordpress.com . VA has developed a pre-vocational program ‘Introduction to Basic Technology (IBT)’ for students of Class VIII-X std. IBT program got innovation award from State Rural Livelihood Mission in 2002. IBT program in getting implemented in 134+ schools in 3 states. This program is also recognized as ‘Multi Skills Foundation Course (MSFC) under National Educational Qualification Framework. VA is also first Fab Lab (Fab Lab 0’ established by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA in 2002. This is prototyping facility to ‘Make almost anything !’. Fab Lab facility is extensively used by university students to develop appropriate technology projects. VA is supported by Dept of Science and Technology as a core support organization (www.dsttara.in ). VA is also a Design Innovation center of Savitribai Phule Pune University (www.vadic.wordpress.com). VA’s program are supported by various foundation viz. Dept of S &T, Asha for Education, MHRD, EATON foundation, Megger (I) Pvt Ltd., Praj foundation L&T Infotech, Chattisgarh Govt, Unicef and others.

Title of the project : Training Rural Students for ‘Joy of Making’!

Summary : The project aims to train 200 rural students using 'Learning while doing' methodology in education in Fab Lab at Vigyan Ashram. They will learn various skills in digital fabrication viz laser cutting, 3 D printing, Vinyl cutting, electronics and use of design softwares. They will make STEM projects useful for them and their community using Fab Lab. They can use Fab Lab throughout the year for making new things ! Projects will be displayed in science exhibition to encourage other schools.

What us the Problem ? Importance of project-based learning for STEM education is principally accepted by educationalist . There are 10 rural schools around Vigyan Ashram. It is observed that almost no efforts are made to provide tools and machines to students to make projects. Lack of mentorship and non-availability of right tools results in failed projects and it became a farce. This results in demoralizing students. We wish to create excitement of 'Making' in young students and encourage curiosity and enterprising-ness.

Solution : 200 students will learn skills in digital fabrication viz laser cutting, 3D printing, Vinyl cutting, electronics and use of design software’s. They will make projects useful to them using these skills. Vigyan ashram team will mentor them. They will be introduced with Design thinking principles while making the project. Efforts will be made to demonstrate the project in science exhibition to encourage other schools to follow. Students can use the lab for one year and make more projects.

Project Details Vigyan Ashram is located in village Pabal approx. 2 hrs drive from nearest city Pune (). Pabal is drought prone village and lacks on almost all SDG parameters. We have a Fab Lab for digital fabrication in our institute. Fab Lab is equipped with tools like 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC routers, electronics etc. Fab Lab is mainly used by Engineering and science graduates to develop various appropriate technologies. So far, there is very limited use by secondary school students of Fab Lab. There are more than 10 secondary schools in neighbouring villages of Fab Lab. We propose to train rural students ( 12 – 14 age) with Fab Lab Skills to ‘Make almost anything!’.

Importance of project-based learning is principally accepted by schools. But almost no efforts are made to provide tools and machines in the schools to make the projects. Lack of mentorship and non- availability of right tools results in failed project ideas. This results in demoralizing students. We wish to create excitement of ‘Making’ in the young students.

We wish to train 200 rural students from class VIII – X in use of Fab Lab for Making and Learning. This project is inspired from Fab Lab in Education program of STEM learning https://www.scopesdf.org/

Selected students of Class VIII to X will work in the Fab Lab for 5 days. They will learn various skills in digital fabrication viz laser cutting , 3 D printing, Vinyl cutting, simple electronics and use of design softwares. They will make projects using these skills. Project will cover different concepts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Vigyan ashram team will mentor them in doing the project. They will be introduced with Design thinking principles while making the project. Efforts will be made to demonstrate the project in science exhibition for schools. Project expenses includes cost of consumables, cost of trainers and related expenses.

We are selecting schools in Pabal, Kanesar, Kendur, Dhamari, Kanhur, Loni villages). They are within 10kms distance from the Fab Lab facility. We are proposing to conduct ideation session by visiting the school. All students of classe VIII and X std (approx. 2000 students) will participate. We will select 20 best ideas from each school. These students will come to Fab Lab. After basic training of 5 days, Students can visit and use the lab to do their projects throughout the year. They will able to apply their theory into practise.

We have done small pilot last year with nearby schools by organising ‘Make Some Thing Week’. In the month of Oct 2018, students done project like Recycling of waste, repairing of electric appliances, irrigation for plants, food processing etc. Success of the program, encouraged us to submit this proposal.

We expect successful implementation of project will encourage more schools to establish small maker space in their school. We will also have model to propagate the program in 134 schools in network with Vigyan Ashram beside advocating with Govt agencies.

Impact We are selecting 10 secondary schools in rural areas. We will be conducting ideation session in the school. Approx. 2000 students will participate. We will select 20 students with best ideas from each school. These 200 students will come to Fab Lab in batches. Success of the projects made by students will encouraging other schools to adopt this program. We also wishes to showcase success and case studies for creating awareness about the importance of project. This ensure continuation of project.
