Alex Gallardo Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Eyes on the Ball April 11 through May 20, 2011 An exhibition of photographs Miller Hall, University of La Verne Photographer’s Statement My start in photojournalism began with a slide show program during a beginning photo class at the University of La Verne. It was presented by a well-known photojournalist at the The Sun in San Bernardino, Tom Kasser. His work opened my eyes. Once I had seen what he could do with a camera, it brought me to see, and not just look, at the world around me. Kasser gave me a goal to strive for, to work at The Sun as a staff photographer. Through my undergraduate career I learned the mechanics of the craft. As a lifetime baseball player I already had the competitive gene so I redirected my passion for athletics toward photography. I took a detour in my quest to be a photojournalist after graduating from ULV. A huge mistake cost me thirteen months of my professional life, and almost the use of my legs. I drove a dump truck backwards over a cliff, spent three months in a hospital and at home in a body cast recuperating from injuries. I spent another nine months in physical therapy learning to walk. Doctors told me that I might not regain the use of my legs or walk without assistance for least five years, if ever. Luckily, I had a great physical therapist. We worked hard every day and prayed to regain the use of my legs. Once I began to walk doctors cleared me to continue as a photographer and stay away from driving trucks.

  • Masterson Struggles in Loss to A's Indians Endure Fourth Straight Road
Masterson struggles in loss to A's Indians endure fourth straight road defeat in Oakland By Jane Lee / Special to MLB.com OAKLAND -- Both the Indians and A's entered Thursday's contest more than 15 games out of their respective division races. Both have endured losing streaks as long as five games this this season. Both are showering its rookies with countless opportunities. Essentially, both have transformed the field into a classroom. However, while the A's have recently watched their youth play a part in the spoiler role, the Indians have watched their work-in-progress group flounder toward the finish line. And, on Thursday, it showed. The Tribe managed just six hits off five Oakland pitchers while Cleveland starter Justin Masterson lasted just four frames en route to a 5-2 loss in the first of a four-game set against the A's, who are winners of nine of their past 11. Meanwhile, the Indians watched their current road trip record move to 0-4. Furthermore, they have lost 15 of their past 19 games -- basically erasing what was once a second-half rally. Aside from a two-run fifth inning, the offense failed to produce any type of rally on Thursday night. Trevor Crowe hit a run-scoring triple in that frame, which was capped off with an RBI ground out off the bat of Michael Brantley against A's starter Clayton Mortensen. The Oakland right-hander exited the game after that frame, but the A's relief corps kept the Indians lineup in check, scattering just two hits through four frames while closer Andrew Bailey picked up his 25th save of the season -- an ongoing record for Oakland rookies.

  • A's Reinstate LHP Brett Anderson from PL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 25, 2019 A’s Reinstate LHP Brett Anderson from PL; Option RHP Tanner Anderson to Las Vegas C Nick Hundley Reinstated from the Injured List and Designated For Assignment OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s reinstated left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson from the paternity list and optioned right-handed pitcher Tanner Anderson to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. The A’s also reinstated catcher Nick Hundley from the 10-day injured list and designated him for assignment. Brett Anderson was placed on the paternity list on Monday. He is 9-5 with a 3.82 ERA and .253 opponents batting average in 20 starts with Oakland and his nine wins are two more than his combined total from the previous three seasons. Anderson has his most wins, starts and innings pitched (115.0) since 2015 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tanner Anderson was recalled from Las Vegas on Tuesday for his second stint with the A’s but did not pitch. He went 0-3 with a 6.04 ERA and .309 opponents batting average in five starts during his first stint from June 10 to July 4. Anderson is also 6-4 with a 5.54 ERA and .293 opponents average in 13 games, 12 starts, with the Aviators. Hundley was batting .200 with two home runs and five RBI in 31 games when he was placed on the 10-day injured list June 8 with back spasms. He also had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee June 18. • Clips for 7-12-10
MEDIA CLIPS – Nov. 28, 2018 Desmond eyes more production in 2019 Thomas Harding | MLB.com | Nov. 27th, 2018 DENVER -- Ian Desmond spent the 2018 season hanging onto the number that mattered -- the one in the Rockies' win column. Many of the other numbers weren't kind to him. After a difficult and injury-filled 2017 season, which began his five-year contract worth $70 million, Desmond was healthy enough for 160 games in '18. But he batted .236 and wasn't treated kindly by the Wins Above Replacement stat -- minus- 0.7, per FanGraphs, and minus-0.6, per Baseball-Reference. As a comparison, Desmond averaged 2.2 and 2.1 WAR, respectively, over his seven full seasons before signing with Colorado. But with consistent production absent, Desmond at times fulfilled the Rockies' contention that he is a winning player. His 22 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 82 runs and 88 RBIs in 2018 are stats many players would love, and the Rockies will tell you he had a knack for the right, heady play during the team's second-half run. Hey, it all made him one of baseball's most interesting figures on Twitter; many games began with vitriolic reaction to him being in the lineup, and more than a handful ended with an apology after a late home run. Often fans familiar with his community involvement and interaction jumped to his defense. "The one thing I can say, I feel like no matter what the situation was, no matter what the numbers said, I feel like I came out and tried to do something to help the team win," Desmond said while clearing out of Coors Field after the Rockies were eliminated from the National League Division Series by the Brewers.
