Class of 1970 The Reunion Committee had fun preparing for this evening. Each meeting, over the past year, was a mini reunion. We did get down to the business of planning but there was also lots of “remember when” time. Tonight, the Class of 1970 takes a break from the 40th Reunion present to walk the halls of Upper Darby High School, Committee a place we called home forty-plus years ago. Home is defined as where you live at a particular time; a place where something began or flourished; a social unit Stephanie Abramides-Carroll living together. Bud Byrnes Life’s experiences have changed us in so many ways Dawn Calzada but we have a common thread that makes this evening Nancy Fech-Spanier special. Whether you scored a goal or beat a drum on Sharon Gray-Reed the football field; raised your voice in song at a holiday concert; rebuilt a V-8 engine at Vo-tech or debated Dan Hey for the HiQ team; the school day started in your Mark Juliano homeroom. Kathleen Lawler We are a family, dare we say a family of “Royal” Donna Lindelow-Walther capacity. Tonight we come together again, traveling Kathleen Lybrand-Murtagh the distance, for this “family reunion.” Reacquaint Patte Marshall-Michel with old buddies. Get to know those you didn’t hang around with. (We were a big class and no one knew Wayne McAllister everyone, so no pressure!) Have fun and laugh. Marsha Mills-Ahearn Get up and dance. Share memories and old stories. Barbara Nescio-Bonnett Take a moment to remember those who are no longer with us and at the end of this memorable evening Carole Smith promise to meet again... in another five years! This was on the site of the present high school. The second building built here was the “Eastern School,” erected in 1872. The Upper Darby School District has the distinction of being the oldest public school district in Pennsylvania, because it was the first district to accept the Free School Act in 1834. Upper Darby High School first opened its doors to students in 1894. A two-story red brick building, it was run by Miss Elizabeth D. Turner, teacher and principal. It was truly the “Little Red School House.” In 1896 the first class of five graduated. The classes grew necessitating the new stone building that opened in 1919. It included a gymnasium with showers and locker rooms, considered the finest in the country at that time; a two-room library and an art room with overhead lighting. The teaching staff, now at seventeen, taught four curricula: Academic, Scientific, Commercial and General. The new school housed grades 7– 12 until 1930, when Upper Darby Junior High (now Beverly Hills Middle School) was opened to grades 7 – 9. High School Principals Ralph L. Johnson 1907 – 1911 Henderson M. Mendenhall 1911– 1918 Warren A. Brosius 1918 – 1919 John H. Tyson 1919 – 1943 James E. Nancarrow 1943– 1964 Charles J. Moore 1964 – 1971 Marvin D. Jaffe 1971 – 1981 Peter Bernardino 1981 – 1981 Gil Minacci 1981 –1995 Geoff Kramer 1995 – 2008 Christopher Dormer 2008 until the present A new wing was added in 1952, including a new gymnasium, a cafeteria and twenty-nine additional classrooms. By the late 1960’s the fifty year old building that we remember was no longer adequate. 1970 was the year that construction began on a new, larger facility. The old stone building was demolished and the new building was opened in 1972. Enrollment peaked at 3200 students but then declined. In September 1981, the ninth grade joined the high school population. Class of 1970 OUR SENIOR YEAR 1969 • Brady Bunch, Marcus Welby, MD and Love American JULY Style premiere.

BLACK PUBLIC CREATIVE FIGURES IN THE NEO-RACIAL MOMENT: AN ANALYSIS OF TYRA BANKS, TYLER PERRY AND SHONDA RHIMES, 2005-2010 by DANIELLE E. WILLIAMS Under the Direction of Alisa Perren ABSTRACT This dissertation examines how Tyra Banks, Shonda Rhimes, and Tyler Perry negotiate blackness in terms of racial representation both in their interactions with the press and public as well as in their final product. Banks, Rhimes, and Perry are among the few prominent African American executive producers working in an industry of inequality. Each is the creative figure behind a prominent prime-time television show. This project contributes to the discussion of race and representation in the field of television studies. I argue there is a connection between how Banks, Rhimes, and Perry publicly discuss race and how these perspectives are encoded in America‟s Next Top Model (Banks), Grey‟s Anatomy (Rhimes), and House of Payne (Perry) from 2005-2010.
