The project is being carried out by the Spanish company for the Municipal Water Company of Guayaquil. It is receiving funding from the EIB and the pumping station alone has a budget of $23 million. Having started last May, the works are expected to take 18 months. José Ramón Delgado, Country Manager for Ecuador, is keen to emphasise that “from a structural point of view this project is a tricky one, as the station is located on marshland where water levels are practically at ground level. Sandbox, a new way of viewing maps

As part of the #estudioSTEM (‘STEM study’) programme, which hopes to spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), the Ayesa Foundation has developed the Sandbox project. This system uses augmented reality to simulate topographic maps by projecting images onto a raised surface of white sand, with the changing altitudes of the maps contoured into the sand. It can also be made to rain across the area, and flows of water can be simulated according to the inclination of the surface. Other functions such as draining and total flooding are also available.

This year the broadcaster chose the group’s founder to be featured in an ‘A Tribute to Spring’ (‘Elogio a la Primavera’) report, a role that has previously been filled by public figures such as journalist Iñaki Gabilondo and weather reporter José Antonio Maldonado. Reminiscing about his childhood, he talked about the especially hard post-war winters in Seville, and how the arrival of spring always meant the end for the cold and the flooding in his birthplace of Triana. “All of a sudden we would go from being poor to being rich. There were probably many places in the world where the standard of living was better than ours, but no one experienced the same miracles as we did in the springtime”. In the same vein, the Ayesa President added that during Semana Santa, “a poor community, who at times had hardly anything to eat, dedicated everything they didn’t have to celebrating and honouring God and the Mother of God”. But Manzanares “always felt that, as every new springtime arrived in Seville, it would not finish in June but would continue throughout the year”. He also says he became fanatical about progress was after his father took him to see the Tapón de Chapina – a diversion dam which stopped the city flooding – in 1950. However, “When the Guadalquivir river closed, and all its laden donkeys were no more, it stopped being a symbol of a new spring and made us aware of our poverty”. For Ayesa’s president, knowled- ge is the key to what has turned modern-day society around. “Major societal changes have been achieved with very little. The miracle comes from the elite of working society and our intelligence”.
