Reid iving cephalopods include nautiluses, bobtail and bottle squids, pygmy cuttlefishes, cuttlefishes, Lsquids, and octopuses. While they may not be as diverse a group as other molluscs or as the bony fishes in terms of number of species (about 600 cephalopod species described worldwide), they are very abundant and some reach large sizes. Hence they are of considerable ecological and commercial fisheries importance globally and in the Western Central Pacific. Remarks on MajorREMARKS Groups of CommercialON MAJOR Importance GROUPS OF COMMERCIAL IMPORTANCE Nautiluses (Family Nautilidae) Nautiluses are the only living cephalopods with an external shell throughout their life cycle. This shell is divided into chambers by a large number of septae and provides buoyancy to the animal. The animal is housed in the newest chamber. A muscular hood on the dorsal side helps close the aperture when the animal is withdrawn into the shell. Nautiluses have primitive eyes filled with seawater and without lenses. They have arms that are whip-like tentacles arranged in a double crown surrounding the mouth. Although they have no suckers on these arms, mucus associated with them is adherent. Nautiluses are restricted to deeper continental shelf and slope waters of the Indo-West Pacific and are caught by artisanal fishers using baited traps set on the bottom. The flesh is used for food and the shell for the souvenir trade. Specimens are also caught for live export for use in home aquaria and for research purposes. -

The main organ systems were studied in the living animal, particular attention being paid to the cilia ry feeding and cleasing mechanisms in the mantle cavity. The anatomy, functioning of the stomach and the ciliary sorting mechanisms are described. The stomach unlike that of almost all species of Donax and like the majority of the Tellinacea belongs to type V, as defined by Purchon, and could be regarded as advanced for the Donacidae. A general comparison has been made between the known species of Donax and some features of Iphigenia brasiliensis Lamarck 1818, also a donacid. INTRODUCTION Very little is known of donacid bivalves from the Brazilian littoral. Except for the publications of Narchi (1972; 1974) on Iphigenia brasiliensis and some ecological and adaptative features on Donax hanleyanus, all references to them are brief descrip tions of the shell and cheklists drawn up from systematic surveys. Beach clams of the genus Donax inhabit intertidal sandy shores in most parts of the world. Donax hanleyanus Philippi 1847 is one of four species occuring through out the Brazilian littoral. Its known range includes Espirito Santo State and the sou thern Atlantic shoreline down to Uruguay (Rios, 1975). Genetic Identification of Octopodidae Species in Southern California Seafood Markets: Species Diversity and Resource Implications Chase Martin Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation Scripps Institution of Oceanography University of California San Diego Abstract Various species of Octopodidae are commonly found in seafood markets throughout Southern California. Most of the octopus available for purchase is imported, with the majority of imports coming from various Asian nations. Despite the diversity of global octopus species, products are most commonly labeled as simply “octopus,” with some distinctions being made in size, e.g., “baby” or “little octopus.” In efforts to characterize species diversity, this study genetically tested 59 octopus samples from a variety of seafood markets in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties. Universal 16S rRNA primers (ref) and CO1 primers developed by Folmer et al. (1994) were used for PCR amplification and sequencing of mtDNA. In all, 105 sequences were acquired. Seven species were identified with some confidence. Amphioctopus aegina was the most prevalent species, while two additional species were undetermined. Little available data exists pertaining to octopus fisheries of the countries of production of the samples. Most available information on octopus fisheries pertains to those of Mediterranean and North African nations, and identifies the Octopus vulgaris as the fished species. Characterizing octopus diversity in Southern California seafood markets and assessing labeling and countries of production provides the necessary first step for assessing the possible management implications of these fisheries and seafood supply chain logistics for this group of cephalopods. Octopus in the family Octopodidae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) has been generally recognized as a “catch-all” genus. The monophyly of octopus species in China’s coastal waters has not yet been studied. In this paper, we inferred the phylogeny of 11 octopus species (family Octopodidae) in China’s coastal waters using nucleotide sequences of two mitochondrial DNA genes: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA. Sequence analysis of both genes revealed that the 11 species of Octopodidae fell into four distinct groups, which were genetically distant from one another and exhibited identical phylogenetic resolution. The phylogenies indicated strongly that the genus Octopus in China’s coastal waters is also not monophyletic, and it is therefore clear that the Octopodidae systematics in this area requires major revision. It is demonstrated that partial sequence information of both the mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and COI could be used as diagnostic molecular markers in the identification and resolution of the taxonomic ambiguity of Octopodidae species. The Occurrence of Cistopus Taiwanicus in Sri Lankan Waters

Amarakoon Marine Biological Resources Division, National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), Crow Island, Colombo 15, Sri Lanka Abstract Cephalopods include a diverse collection of more than 650 species of octopus, cuttlefish, squid and nautilus. Several of these species are commercially important in Sri Lanka. As morphological identification is sometimes difficult, molecular techniques were used to confirm the species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus species found in Sri Lankan waters. Cephalopod samples were collected from Chilaw, Negombo, Beruwela and Kalpitiya. The miotochondrial COI region was amplified and sequenced. The sequences were matched with universal databases to identify each species. The cuttlefish species Sepia aculeata, Sepiella inermis, Sepia pharaonis and Sepioteuthis lessoniana, the squid species,' Loligo singhalensis and Loligo (Uroteuthis) duvacelli were identified by this barcoding technique. Two species of octopus,Cistopus taiwanicusaad Octopus vulgaris were also identified. A significant finding in this study was that two separate octopus specimens collected from Negombo and Kalpitiya were identified as Cistopus taiwanicus. Four species of Cistopus, namely, C indicus, C. chinensis, C. taiwanicus and C. platinoidus have been recorded in the world. Out of these four species, only C. indicus has been reported from Sri Lanka. Therefore, the species list for Cephalopod species precent in Sri Lanka could be updated to include the species Cistopus taiwanicus. Further research is needed to confirm whether C. indicus and C. -

Halong Bay in the Gulf of Tonking in Viet Nam has been famous for its natural pearls for many centuries (Strack, 2006). Since 1990, more than twenty companies have established Akoya pearl farms in Viet Nam and production exceeded 1 000 kg in 2001. Akoya pearl culture has also been investigated on the Atlantic coast of South America (Urban, 2000; Lodeiros et al., 2002), in Australia (O’Connor et al., 2003), Korea (Choi and Chang, 2003) and in the Arabian Gulf (Behzadi, Parivak and Roustaian, 1997). -

Age of individuals was determined using daily statolith increments. The life cycle of L. noctiluca off North Queensland was just over 4 mo. Analysis of growth found that growth was non-asymptotic, and the form of the curve; exponential, linear or log-linear, depended on sex and season that individuals were caught. Winter-caught individuals were the fastest growing and achieved the largest size com- pared with summer or autumn-caught individuals. Furthermore, females grew faster than males dur- ing the winter. The patterns of growth of L. noctiluca were compared between tropical North Queensland and temperate New South Wales. The temperate individuals lived longer and had slower growth rates. There was also a marked seasonal influence on the onset of sexual maturity among the North Queensland population, with the fastest growing winter-caught individuals matur- ing later than the autumn or summer individuals. L. noctiluca has a large latitudinal range from New Guinea to Tasmania, this study, and published work, suggests a trend towards increased lifespan and decreased growth rate with increasing latitude. -

De Pretis 30, 95039, Trecastagni, Catania, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author ABSTRACT The earliest reported alien species that entered the Mediterranean after only nine years from the inauguration of the Suez Canal was “Meleagrina” sp., which was subsequently identified as the Gulf pearl-oyster, Pinctada radiata (Leach, 1814) (Bivalvia Pteriidae). Thereafter, an increasing series of records of this species followed. In fact, nowadays it can be considered a well-established species throughout the Mediterranean basin. Since the Red Sea isthmus was considered to be the only natural way of migration, nobody has ever doubted about the name to be assigned to the species, P. radiata, since this was the only Pinctada Röding, 1798 cited in literature for the Mediterranean Sea. Taxonomy of Pinctada is complicated since it lacks precise constant morphological characteristics to distinguish one species from the oth- ers. Thus, distribution and specimens location are particularly important since different species mostly live in different geographical areas. Some researchers also used a molecular phylogenetic approach, but the results were discordant. -

The diploid number is 38 chromosomes and the karyotype consists of nine pairs of metacentric chromosomes, two pairs of submetacentric-metacentric, seven pairs of submetacentric and one pair of telocentric chromosomes. CA3- positive bands are located on eight chromosome pairs and DAPI treatment resulted in uniform staining. Major ribosomal clusters 18S-5.8S-28S are located on the short arm of one submetacentric chromosome pair. This study presents the first ever record of molluscan fauna from shapk beach of Jiwani. Amongst these fifty eight (58) species were found belonging to class gastropoda, twenty two (22) bivalves, one (1) scaphopod and one (1) polyplachopora comprised of thirty nine (39) families. Each collected samples was identified on species level as well as biometric data of certain species was calculated for both sites. Molluscan species similarity was also calculated between two sites. For gastropods it was remain 74 %, for bivalves 76 %, for Polyplacophora 100 % and for Scapophoda 0 %. Meanwhile total similarity of molluscan species between two sites was calculated 75 %. Notable identified species from Bandri and Shapak includes Oysters, Muricids, Babylonia shells, Trochids, Turbinids and shells belonging to Pinnidae, Arcidae, Veneridae families are of commercial significance which can be exploited for a variety of purposes like edible, ornamental, therapeutic, dye extraction, and in cement industry etc.
