Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Summary This thesis argues that Collingwood’s philosophy is best understood as a diagnosis of and response to a crisis of Western civilisation. The various and complementary aspects of the crisis of civilisation are explored and Collingwood is demonstrated to be working in the traditions of Romanticism and ‘historicism’. In Part One, I examine Collingwood’s conception of the crisis of modernity in terms of the Romantic idea of the unity of the forms of experience and his philosophy of art. Contemporary civilisation is seen as corrupted by the suppression of emotion and is to be regenerated by art: the expression of emotion and truthful consciousness. In Part Two, the crisis of civilisation is explained as the failure of contemporary civilisation to significantly move beyond a dependency on a Platonic philosophy of being. The solution, it is proposed, is the development of a philosophy of becoming, which reconciles normative thinking with historical change. The criteria for value and truth are located, not in an ideal transcendent world, but in a ‘way of life’ in the widest sense. In this respect, Collingwood is compared with Ortega y Gasset and Nietzsche. Part Three demonstrates that Collingwood’s dialectical philosophy reveals itself in a historicist phenomenology of mind and a dialectical theory of liberalism and civilisation. This dialectical view leads to a critique of the ill effects of capitalism and of the rationalisation and bureaucratisation of contemporary life. On these subjects, the theories of Collingwood and Ortega y Gasset are contrasted with those of Nietzsche and Weber. Collingwood ought to be understood in the context of the legacy of romanticism and the development of historical thinking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The emergence of ‘historicism’ and the influence of Romanticism meant a change from regarding philosophy as the pursuit of abstract transcendental truths towards regarding truth and meaning as immanent, historically contextual, and contingent. This critical development, in both philosophy and Western culture more generally, occurred in response to what was perceived as a profound crisis in Western civilisation. Collingwood was one of the thinkers that provided a key positive contribution to these movements, and developed a response to the crisis. The transition towards a greater appreciation of historicity and contingency, brought about by the influence of Romanticism and historicism, meant that philosophy comes to be understood to a greater extent as philosophy of cultures and civilisations. It is in this context that the notion of ‘crisis’ ought to be understood: at any given time, a culture or civilisation will undergo conditions of relative strength or vigour and of relative crisis or decadence1. Also, although the focus of this study is primarily on Collingwood, similar philosophies were developed by Ortega y Gasset and Croce, and in the course of the thesis these affinities, especially with Ortega, will help to shed light on Collingwood’s philosophy2. The theme of the crisis of civilisation pervades Collingwood’s work, and although this theme has been mentioned by some commentators on Collingwood’s philosophy, it has not been discussed in much detail. David Boucher asserts that the later published works of Collingwood reflect his lifelong preoccupation with identifying and combating the enemies of civilisation, by coming to a better self- understanding (Boucher and Vincent, 2000: 186).     Excremental Ecstasy, Divine Defecation and Revolting Reception: Configuring a Scatological Gaze in Trash Filmmaking Zoe Gross Scatology, for all the sordid formidability the term evokes, is not an es- pecially novel or unusual theme, stylistic technique or descriptor in film or filmic reception. Shit happens – to emphasise both the banality and perva- siveness of the cliché itself – on multiple levels of textuality, manifesting it- self in both the content and aesthetic of cinematic texts, and the ways we respond to them. We often refer to “shit films,” using an excremental vo- cabulary redolent of detritus, malaise and uncleanliness to denote their otherness and “badness”. That is, films of questionable taste, aesthetics, or value, are frequently delineated and defined by the defecatory: we describe them as “trash”, “crap”, “filth”, “sewerage”, “shithouse”. When considering cinematic purviews such as the b-film, exploitation, and shock or trash filmmaking, whose narratives are so often played out on the site of the gro- tesque body, a screenscape spectacularly splattered with bodily excess and waste is de rigeur. Here, the scatological is both often on blatant dis- play – shit is ejected, consumed, smeared, slung – and underpining or tinc- turing form and style, imbuing the text with a “shitty” aesthetic. In these kinds of films – which, as their various appellations tend to suggest, are de- fined themselves by their association with marginality, excess and trash, the underground, and the illicit – the abject body and its excretia not only act as a dominant visual landscape, but provide a kind of somatic, faecal COLLOQUY text theory critique 18 (2009).

    Creativity in Nietzsche and Heidegger: The Relation of Art and Artist Justin Hauver Philosophy and German Mentor: Hans Sluga, Philosophy August 22, 2011 I began my research this summer with a simple goal in mind: I wanted to out- line the ways in which the thoughts of Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger complement one another with respect to art. I had taken a few courses on each philosopher beforehand, so I had some inclination as to how their works might be brought into agreement. However, I almost immediately ran into difficulty. It turns out that Heidegger, who lived and thought two or three generations after Nietzsche, had actually lectured on the topic of Nietzsche's philosophy of art and had placed Nietzsche firmly in a long tradition characterized by its mis- understanding of art and of the work of art. This means that Heidegger himself did not agree with me|he did not see his thoughts on art as complementary with Nietzsche's. Rather, Heidegger saw his work as an improvement over the misguided aesthetic tradition. Fortunately for me, Heidegger was simply mistaken. At least, that's my thesis. Heidegger did not see his affinity with Nietzsche because he was misled by his own misinterpretation. Nevertheless, his thoughts on art balance nicely with those of Nietzsche. To support this claim, I will make three moves today. First, I will set up Heidegger's critique, which is really a challenge to the entire tradition that begins with Plato and runs its course up to Nietzsche. Next, I will turn to Heidegger's views on art to see how he overcomes the tradition and answers his own criticism of aesthetics.

The sample consisted of 98 current and former users of MDMA. Several strategies were utilized to recruit respondents and data were collected through in-depth interviews during 1997 and 1998. The majority of respondents had used MDMA during the 6-month period prior to the interview and a large percentage had consumed the drug on 100 occasions or more. Most respondents reported feelings of emotional closeness while consuming MDMA but without the desire for penetrative sex. Others, however, reported that MDMA increased sexual arousal and some respondents (in particular gay and bisexual females) had used MDMA specifically for sexual enhancement. Sexual risk taking (e.g., having multiple partners, engaging in sex without a condom) was prevalent among respondents who did engage in sexual activity during MDMA episodes. Explanations for the findings are offered and implications for prevention/intervention are discussed.     The Aesthetics of Frustration: Diversity and the ASA Sherri Irvin University of Oklahoma As I began to write a more standard aesthetics paper on an entirely different topic, my thoughts turned to several episodes in which scholars of color presented their work at ASA meetings with recep- tions ranging from chilly to hostile. Some have stated that they will not likely return to the ASA due to these experiences. Because I be- lieve the resources of aesthetics can shed considerable light on social and political dynamics, I will examine some aesthetic elements of this situation and use them to inform a schematic proposal about how we might move forward. I don’t have the answers—finding them is not a task for one person, and scholars belonging to the communities that have been margin- alized and excluded in our professional spaces must be centrally involved.     Creativity, Shared Meaning, and Relationships By Carlina Rinaldi 4The search for meaning begins from the moment of birth, from the child’s first silent “why,” and continues all through life. It is a difficult search. Young children make enormous efforts to put together often-disconnected fragments of experience to make sense of things. They persevere with their search stub- bornly, tirelessly, making mistakes, and often on their own. But while engaged in this search, children ask us to share the search with them. We as teachers are asked by children to see them as scientists or philosophers searching to understand something, to draw out a meaning, to grasp a “piece of life,” and to respect this search as a quality central to all human beings. We are asked to be the child’s traveling companion in this search for meaning. We are also asked to respect the meanings that children produce, the explanatory theories they develop, and their attempts to find and give answers. When we honor children this way, the children reveal themselves to us: We come to know how they perceive, question, and inter- pret reality, and to understand their relationships with it.     TBR 2 (2011): 43–58 Herman Bavinck’s Theological Aesthetics: A Synchronic and Diachronic Analysis Robert S. Covolo PhD candidate, Fuller Theological Seminary In 1914 Herman Bavinck wrote an article for the Almanak of the Vrije Universiteit entitled, “Of Beauty and Aesthetics,” which has recently been translated and republished for the English-speaking world in Essays on Religion, Science, and Society.1 While this is not the only place where Bavinck treats the subject of beauty, this article stands out as a unique, extended glimpse into Bavinck’s theological aesthetics.2 In it we see that Bavinck was conversant with philosophical aesthetics and aware of the tensions of doing theological aesthetics from both a small “c” catholic and a distinctly Reformed perspective. There are many ways to assess Bavinck’s reflections on aesthetics. For example, one could look at the intimations in Bavinck’s works of the aesthetics formulations of later Dutch Reformed writers such as Rookmaker, Seerveld, or Wolterstorff.3 1. I begin with an expository analysis of Kant’s cognitive and aesthetic judgments, highlighting the presence of attention, form of reflection, and structure of purposeless purposiveness in the judgment. Next, I address the Buddhist idealist Yogācāra philosophical tradition. Through this theoretical lens, I examine Open Presence meditation, with an emphasis on meditative non-dualism, attention, and meditative goals. In the final chapter, I tie together the groundwork laid in the first two chapters into a comparative analysis identifying points of compatibility and contention within the general areas of judgment, attention, purposeless purposiveness, and transformation.
