April Fools March 31 It has been a year since we did our initial April Fools section. The community had so much fun with it we decided to do it again. The only problem is, that this year, April Fools Day did not fall on April 1 like it did last year. No problem, we here at the Journal-Sun won’t let a single day stop us from working hard so our community has a little fun. We will just remove March 31 this year, no problem. All kidding aside we decided to do an April Fools section again this year. Last year was the first time I think a newspaper here in Cass County has done a section like this. (If that is wrong please let us know. It would be great to see an archived copy of the Journal or the Sun from an earlier time that did it.) Regardless, the April Fools edi- tion last year couldn’t have come at a better time. We were plummet- ing headlong into COVID and the mood was somber. I mean, do you blame people; many didn’t even have toilet paper, because others were hoarding it. The decision to do the April Fools section last year was done nearly at the last minute. Our team quickly put some articles to- gether and the community loved it. I am not sure we have had a more passed-around newspaper than we did those, to the point we joked about doing it every week. It was not only great to hear the positive feedback we got from the section, but all the crazy comments we also received. The fact is, news- papers are still the most credible form of media, so it makes sense that some fell for the April Fools section. In the days following the paper’s release, we received lots of crazy phone calls. Many people we heard from asked us when the earliest the Dallas Cowboys would begin to hold their spring training here in Atlanta, and how they could get tickets. The reactions came from the satire article in the section that Tim Emmons, our Sports editor wrote about the Cowboys fictitiously moving a training camp to Cass County. On another phone call, a reader asked us if Baby Yoda and the Photo by Sierra Jones Mandalorian would still be around to take pictures, stemming from the fake picture and cutline of the Star Wars characters at Atlanta Rab- Spring beauties bit Stadium. Tyrell King competes at state powerlifting meet

Tyrell King finished off a great career competing at the Texas High School Pow- erlifting Association State Meet in Abilene Mar. 27. Tyrell squatted 650, benched 410 and dead lifted a personal-best 605 pounds which tied him for fifth place out of 16 lifters in the 308-pound weight class. Five hundred of the strongest lifters in Texas from all classifications descended on the Taylor County Expo Hall to lift last Saturday. “I’m very proud of the way Tyrell battled back after a tough start to finish out by going 3-for-3 in the dead lift and setting a PR on his last pull,” Head Coach Craig Fant said. “There were some strong lifters in his class and some big weight being pushed around. Tyrell has been a huge part of Atlanta Iron the last four years and we will really miss him!” Atlanta

Rabbit netters compete at district, make regionals

Last week Atlanta’s team competed in dis- trict play. Six teams and more than 50 players competed for a chance to go to regionals by being one of the top two players in their event. This consisted of boys’ and girls’ singles, boys’ and girls’ doubles and mixed doubles. After two long days Atlanta brought home the dis- trict trophy for the boys’ team and after tying with Redwater Atlanta brought home second place for girls as Redwater just edged the Lady Rabbs out in games won. In boys’ singles Sam Jones took first place and qualified for regionals with Will Porterfield placing fourth. In girls’ singles Gabby Rigdon placed second and qualified for regionals. In boys’ doubles Landon Moore and Jackson Dillinger, having to play every match since they were not seeded, took first and qual- ified for regionals. Finally in mixed doubles Jake Carter and Jairy Me- dina placed second qualifying for regionals with Alex

Jones and Yarithza Sanchez placing third which casts Courtesy photos them as first alternates to regionals. Atlanta’s boys’ tennis team won district last week and the ladies placed second overall. “As a coach I could not be prouder of these players,” Head Coach Stuart Drake said. “But the one thing that stuck out during the district tournament, more than these players competitive play, was the fact that I had several parents and coaches come to me to com- pliment Atlanta’s players’ sportsmanship and that it was one of the best tournaments they have attended.”
