Haystack Prayer Meeting ‘We can do this, if we will!’ (SJ Mills) At the Semi-Centennial Anniversary of the institution of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission (ABCFM) at Bradford, Massachusetts, Dr. Samuel M. Worcester summarized very concisely the situation which existed during the pioneer days in America. He wrote: The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, which fifty years ago this day was instituted at Bradford, had its origin neither in Bradford, nor Andover, nor Williamstown, nor any other single locality, but in the revivals at the end of the eighteenth, and the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was but an embodiment and expression of the missionary spirit, which was then witnessing itself in public and private supplications, and in other modes, as seldom or never before, since the days of the Fathers of New England. (Worcester; The Haystack Centennial)) During the latter part of the eighteenth and the early part of the nineteenth century several missionary societies were formed in the United States. As early as 1796 the Baptists organized a missionary society for carrying on work in the State of New York. The Connecticut Missionary Society was instituted in 1798 and the Massachusetts Missionary Society in 1799. In 1802, the Massachusetts Baptist Missionary Society was organized.) In 1804, the Massachusetts Missionary Society amended its constitution so as to embrace work in foreign parts, - ‘through the more distant regions of the earth, as circumstances shall invite and the ability of the society shall admit.’ The Synod of Pittsburg instituted the ‘Western Missionary Society’ in 1802 and carried out an extensive work on the frontiers. -

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was the first American Christian missionary organization. It was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College. In the 19th century it was the largest and most important of American missionary organizations. The founding of the ABCFM was inspired by the Second Great Awakening. In 1806, five students from Williams College in western Massachusetts took shelter from a thunderstorm in a haystack. At the Haystack Prayer Meeting, they came to the common conviction that "the field is the world" and inspired the creation of the ABCFM four years later. The objective of the ABCFM was to spread Christianity worldwide.[1] Congregationalist in origin, the ABCFM also accepted missionaries from Presbyterian (1812-1870), Dutch-Reformed (1819-1857) and other denominations. In 1812, the ABCFM sent its first missionaries -- Adoniram and Ann Hasseltine Judson; Samuel and Roxana Peck Nott; Samuel and Harriet Atwood Newell; Gordon Hall, and Luther Rice-to British India. Between 1812 and 1840, they were followed by missionaries to the following people and places: Tennessee to the Cherokee Indians, India (the Bombay area), northern Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii); east Asia: China, Singapore and Siam (Thailand); the Middle East: (Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, the Holy Land and Persia (Iran)); and Africa: Western Africa-Cape Palmas-and Southern Africa-among the Zulus). -
ʻōpūkahaʻia, Was at the Age of About Ten; Both His Parents Were Slain Before His Eyes
ʻŌpūkahaʻia The Inspiration for the Hawaiian Mission Hostilities of Kamehameha’s conquest on Hawai‘i Island supposedly ended with the death of Keōua at Kawaihae Harbor in early-1792 and the placement of the vanquished chief’s body at Puʻukoholā Heiau at Kawaihae. The island was under the rule of Kamehameha. However, after a short time, another chief entered into a power dispute with Kamehameha; his name was Nāmakehā. In 1795, Kamehameha asked Nāmakehā, who lived in Kaʻū, Hawai‘i, for help in fighting Kalanikūpule and his Maui forces on O‘ahu, but Nāmakehā ignored the invitation. Instead, he opted to rebel against Kamehameha by tending to his enemies in Kaʻū, Puna and Hilo on Hawai‘i Island. Hostilities erupted between the two in 1796. The battle took place at Hilo. Kamehameha defeated Nāmakehā; his warriors next turned their rage upon the villages and families of the vanquished. The alarm was given of their approach. A family, who had supported Nāmakehā, the father (Ke‘au) taking his wife (Kamohoʻula) and two children fled to the mountains. There he concealed himself for several days with his family in a cave. (Brumaghim) The warriors found the family and killed the adults. A survivor, a son, ʻŌpūkahaʻia, was at the age of about ten; both his parents were slain before his eyes. The only surviving member of the family, besides himself, was an infant brother he hoped to save from the fate of his parents, and carried him on his back and fled from the enemy. But he was pursued, and his little brother, while on his back, was killed by a spear from the enemy. -

Foreign Mission School The Second Great Awakening spread from its origins in Connecticut to Williamstown, Massachusetts; enlightenment ideals from France were gradually being countered by an increase in religious fervor, first in the town, and then in Williams College. In the summer of 1806, in a grove of trees, in what was then known as Sloan's Meadow, Samuel John Mills, James Richards, Francis L Robbins, Harvey Loomis and Byram Green debated the theology of missionary service. Their meeting was interrupted by a thunderstorm and they took shelter under a haystack until the sky cleared. That event has since been referred to as the “Haystack Prayer Meeting” and is viewed by many scholars as the pivotal event for the development of Protestant missions in the subsequent decades and century. The first American student missionary society began in September 1808, when Mills and others called themselves "The Brethren," whose object was "to effect, in the person of its members, a mission or missions to the heathen." (Smith) Mills graduated Williams College in 1809 and later Andover Theological Seminary. In June 1810, Mills and James Richards petitioned the General Association of the Congregational Church to establish the foreign missions. American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was formed with a Board of members from Massachusetts and Connecticut. “The Board was instituted in June, 1810; and was incorporated, by the Legislature of Massachusetts, June 20, 1812. Its beginnings, as is well known, were small, and the anticipations of its supporters not remarkably sanguine:” “but its resources and operations have regularly increased, till, in respect to the number of its patron - the amount of its funds - and the extent of its influence, it is entitled to a place among the principal benevolent institutions of the earth.” “The American Board of Foreign Missions, however, can neither claim, nor does it desire exclusive patronage.
